Chapter 14 - Chapter 13: Enchanted

Bethany sidled up to dad and practically purred at him, "What do you think daddy, did I do a good job. My canvas was not the greatest to work with but I think I was able to turn some trash into what could be considered as art-ish. I know you still can't hide her ugly, pathetic self but she is at least halfway presentable. Isn't she?"

"You did good, Bethany. I'm sure our guest will be pleased. Thank you for being a good girl and doing this for me. It was such short notice and I did not have time to get anyone else to help." Dad praised her.

Bethany lit up with excitement from dad's compliment. You would think she was a little girl waiting for her daddy's words of praise.

Reaching up and giving him a quick peck on the cheek she stated, "Ok, thank you daddy. I am going to go and meet up with mom and the twins now. Do you need me for anything else?"

She started to walk away. She had already made it several steps away from us, but then stopped when dad asked her another question.

"Is the meeting room all set up? Is everything as planned and secure? I need everything to go smoothly. Can you check it out one more time before you go?" He asked her.

Bethany looked a little annoyed but quickly agreed.

I am not sure what Bethany had to do with setting up the meeting room, I would have assumed one of the staff would have prepared everything. I do not ever remember Bethany getting her hands dirty by doing any work towards projects. Bethany is more of a point and tells someone else to do the job. Not a do the job herself type of person.

She is not normally one to work with her hands and prepare for anything. She would rather tell someone to do it for her. But I watched as Bethany walked back to the building. She didn't go inside, she just stopped right outside the door.

Then she lifted her hands and kind of waved them around a little bit.

Weird!

"The locking system seems to be in place and working just fine. Once everyone is inside there will be no interruptions or disturbances until the meeting is completely over." Bethany gritted out while still standing there.

Again, I did not like the way she used the word meeting. It was as if it had a completely different meaning than it really does.

And that scared me more than you could imagine.

"Go ahead and just make a sweep of the perimeter to double everything. I don't need any mishaps tonight! Tonight needs to go smoothly! Word of mouth is the biggest form of advertisement. And if our client is not satisfied word will spread quickly and this will be a one and done deal. Which means your commission will be very minimal." Dad ordered.

Bethany turned around, clear anger in her eyes.

"But dad, I have already checked it like five times, nothing has happened since I checked it two hours ago! No one even knows about this build besides us, for Goddess's sake!" She practically yelled at him.

I just stood there with wide eyes and watched everything unfold in front of me. I have never heard Bethany talk to dad that way before. That was a complete shock to my system.

"Now listen here, if you do not want to join your sister with our new guest, I suggest you do what I told you, and do it fast. And watch your tone with me, I am not a very patient man and you know that. He will be here in less than twenty minutes. So, get busy!" Dad was shaking in anger, his body tensed up like he was ready to throw a punch.

Bethany didn't argue any more and quickly got busy doing whatever it is she was doing.

This night was full of surprises.

They have never talked to each other that way before. well at least not that I have ever witnessed. Was a little scary to watch, I almost felt sorry for Bethany.

She started walking along the side of the building with one arm out towards it. I was not sure exactly what she was doing, because she never touched the building, just waved her arm up and down along the walls as she walked past. She slowly made her way around the whole building, checking every side.

As I watched her, I could have sworn I saw that same sparkle I saw earlier while she was doing my make-up. But it was gone as quickly as it came.

"What is she doing?" I ask quietly, hoping I would not upset my father anymore.

Dad glared at me, "Isn't it obvious she is checking the perimeter of the building to make sure that it is secure. I think even a blind person can see that."

Well ok, that did not answer my question at all. In fact, I have more questions than I did before.

Testing my luck, I spoke up again. "I see that, but how? She isn't even touching anything."

Sighing dad turned directly towards me.

I flinched back out of reflex, and he seemed to like that response out of me. His eyes held a slight glint to them at my reaction to him. Smirking he simply stated, "I don't know why I should have to explain it to you, but I guess it will give you a better understanding that you are not going to be able to escape this."

He waited a minute to see if I was going to comment on the 'escape' part or not. When I didn't say anything, he seemed pleased.

Dad continued, "The building is enchanted."

Well, I guess that made perfect sense, because everyone had an enchanted building in their backyard. Note sarcasm.
