Chapter 18 - Chapter Eighteen

Tara rushed out to the front counter, her flats skidding slightly on the polished tiles. She crouched behind it and held her breath as she listened for more sounds from outside. She couldn't hear anything even as hard as she strained her ears. And she couldn't risk getting closer or worse, stepping out to see what the danger was. Remaining inside the shop seemed like the safer option. 

Until a sharp crack of glass shattering broke the tense silence. Tara screamed and jerked upright from behind the counter, her heart finding a resting spot in her throat. Her eyes darted to the front door—where a jagged hole now gaped in the pane of glass, glittering fragments cascading across the shop floor. A rock lay among the shards, surrounded by chaos. Outside, just beyond the flickering reflection of streetlights, she caught a glimpse of movement.

Her eyes hadn't been playing tricks on her earlier. There was someone there, wearing a dark hoodie with a mask over their face.
