Chapter-18
Under Gu Changan and Wei Xiangqin's firm insistence, Gu Xi reluctantly returned to the hospital to continue her IV drip.
"Xixi, is everything you and your father said really true?" Wei Xiangqin held her daughter's hand tightly, worry etched deep into her features.
She knew how much her husband admired the Gu family in Beijing, but she never imagined they would be involved in a conspiracy against their family.
"Mom, as long as the investigation goes deep enough, those with hidden agendas will eventually expose themselves." Gu Xi patted her mother's hand gently and smiled. "Let's not talk about these terrible things now. I've been running around all day—I'm starving."
"Oh dear, how careless of me." Looking at her daughter's pale face, Wei Xiangqin was filled with self-blame. "I should never have let you go to the construction site in the first place. If there's anything that needs to be done, just let me go instead!"
"Mom, it wouldn't have mattered who went. It was an emergency." Gu Xi tugged at the corner of Wei Xiangqin's sleeve and pouted playfully. "Dearest Mommy, please go make something delicious for your starving daughter. I'm so hungry I could eat a whole cow!"
"Alright, be good. If you feel unwell, call the nurse immediately. I've already let your second aunt know. She'll come visit you shortly."
"I know, I know. Go on already." Gu Xi urged her with a grin.
Wei Xiangqin left the room, turning back to look at her daughter every few steps, still worried.
Gu Xi stared out the hospital window as dusk slowly blanketed the sky. Her heart finally began to settle. At least the demolition had been halted in time, and no lives were lost. The man found behind the iron door, along with Zhang Yue—now guarded by her father—were both crucial clues that could lead to the mastermind behind it all.
As for whether her father would believe the Gu family in Beijing could betray him, Gu Xi knew it would take time. In her previous life, she hadn't believed it either—until it was too late. When she was drugged and assaulted, and Gu Mingzhu threw nude photos in her face to humiliate her, she finally realized the truth.
The Gu family—who prided themselves on their elite status—were nothing but a pack of vipers, driven by greed and devoid of conscience.
To them, anyone outside the immediate Gu bloodline was expendable. As long as you could make money for them, they would tolerate you. But once you stepped out of line, they would quietly seize everything you had—through mergers, acquisitions, and legal manipulation—before erasing your existence entirely.
In the end, Gu Changan's downfall had stemmed from two things: his refusal to merge Changsheng Group with the Gu family's conglomerate, and his brother-in-law's obstruction of a Gu family member's political promotion. That was enough for the Gu family to decide he had to be eliminated.
