Chapter 20
Yes, she was no longer worthy of being her parents' daughter. But if she didn't take revenge, how could she ever face her parents in the underworld?
Zhan Mingyuan didn't understand her sorrow, let alone her fierce determination to fight to the death. Watching him leave in grief, Gu Xi let out a long, steadying sigh. It was better this way—cutting ties now meant fewer distractions, and a stronger resolve to carry out her revenge.
"Second Aunt, where's my brother?" Gu Xi asked with a faint smile, leaning against the headboard.
"He went to a class reunion. He doesn't know you're sick yet. If he did, he'd definitely come to see you."
"It's just a cold, not serious at all. It's just my mother fussing over me," Gu Xi pouted playfully. "Auntie, if you really love me, let me get out of this hospital as soon as possible."
"You're dreaming," Wei Xiangxiu said firmly, holding her arm. "You have to stay here under observation for at least a day. Your mother told me you fell down the stairs this morning and were unconscious for quite a while."
"I was just sleepy," Gu Xi muttered. "Just took a nap."
"I think you stayed up too late playing last night."
So, they were back to square one.
Gu Xi and her second aunt argued good-naturedly, when Wei Xiangqin walked in carrying a thermos bucket.
"What are you two talking about? You both look so cheerful," Wei Xiangqin said as she placed the thermos on the small table next to the bed and started unpacking layer after layer of delicious food. She carefully arranged each dish in front of Gu Xi. Ignoring the IV drip in her hand, Gu Xi picked up her chopsticks and eagerly poked at the braised pork.
"It's still hooked up to the IV!" Wei Xiangqin said quickly, seeing her daughter's eyes light up. "Drink some soup first, then eat a little of the side dishes."
"No way! Mom's braised pork is the most delicious!"
"Eat less—you're not supposed to have greasy food right now." Even though she knew it wasn't good for her, Wei Xiangqin, who loved her daughter like her life, had made it anyway.
Looking at the chicken soup, porridge, side dishes, and braised pork laid out before her, Gu Xi's eyes grew misty. She awkwardly used her left hand to hold the chopsticks, and as she ate, she mumbled incoherently to Wei Xiangqin and Wei Xiangxiu, "Mom, Second Aunt, you're both terrible!"
"Eat slowly—no one's going to snatch your food," Wei Xiangqin said, stroking her daughter's head with a loving smile. "Your Second Aunt and I will go out for dinner later."
"Yeah, Mom's cooking is the best!"
