Chapter 23

Gu Changan didn't want to believe that the Gu family in Beijing truly intended to destroy him. After all, he had no solid evidence in hand. For the moment, he was caught in a dilemma, unsure of how to proceed.

When Gu Xi woke up, the first thing she saw was her father lying on the small companion bed, still fully dressed.

Gu Changan's face looked weary, and even in sleep, his brows were slightly furrowed, as if he couldn't find peace.

"Xixi, you're awake?" Wei Xiangqin entered the room carrying breakfast.

"Mom, why didn't Dad go home to sleep?"

Wei Xiangqin set the breakfast on the table, gently pulled the blanket that had slipped off her husband's shoulders back up, then turned to her daughter with a soft voice. "Your dad was too worried about you. He insisted on staying here to keep watch."

Fortunately, their family had paid for a private ward with a companion bed. Otherwise, President Gu would've had to spend the night on the floor.

"Mom, I'm really fine now. Let's get discharged today," Gu Xi said with concern, seeing how exhausted her parents looked.

"Alright, let's observe for another day. If the doctor says it's okay, we'll go home."

"Mom…" Gu Xi wheedled, acting like a spoiled child.

"What are you two whispering about?" Gu Changan opened his eyes and looked over at his wife and daughter, who were chatting and laughing. A gentle warmth rose in his eyes.

"Dad, you're awake!" Gu Xi beamed and waved at him. "Come try Mom's loving breakfast! She even brought your favorite big meat buns!"

"You little rascal," Gu Changan chuckled. He got up, went into the bathroom to wash his face, and came out looking more refreshed. He sat down at the small dining table.

"Dad, are you hungry? Eat quickly!" Gu Xi handed him the chopsticks like a little puppy, and pulled her mother down to sit next to her. The small family gathered at the table and began their new day, chatting and laughing over breakfast.

After they had eaten their fill, Wei Xiangqin stood up and took the dishes over to the sink.

As soon as her mother left the table, the smile on Gu Xi's face slowly faded. She turned to her father and asked quietly, "Dad, did you find anything from yesterday's investigation?"
