Chapter 16
Gu Xi's words struck a tender chord in Gu Changan's heart.
He had grown up dirt poor. If not for his wife's unwavering devotion and the persistent support from his brother-in-law, he would never have built such a successful business empire. Then, when Gu Xi was born, that tiny bundle of joy had warmed his tired heart in a way he never expected. Though his mother used to grumble about not having a grandson to carry on the family name, Gu Changan had never once felt disappointed by having a daughter.
And now, looking at her—his daughter, pale and sickly, yet still dragging herself to a demolition site to prevent disaster—how could he not feel shaken?
If she hadn't intervened, someone might've died today.
What was the point of making all this money if it couldn't protect the people he loved? What use was wealth if you had the life to earn it but not the life to spend it?
His gaze softened as he looked at his daughter.
Yes, Xixi was their little lucky star.
"Xixi!"
Their moment of quiet relief was suddenly interrupted as Wei Xiangqin rushed over, her face full of panic.
"Mom? Why are you here?" Gu Xi stepped forward and took her mother's hand.
"You ran out of the hospital before you were even fully recovered! How could I rest easy knowing that?" Wei Xiangqin scolded gently, but her eyes brimmed with worry. "Did you find your father? Is everything okay?"
"Yes. Everything's fine now. Nothing serious happened," Gu Xi reassured her.
"No, you don't understand," Gu Changan cut in, pulling both his wife and daughter into a tight embrace. "If it weren't for Xixi, someone could've died today. She insisted on going inside the house to check—she saved a man's life."
"Is that true?" Wei Xiangqin paled.
"Wait… did you know something beforehand?" Gu Changan narrowed his eyes.
Wei Xiangqin quickly told him everything that had happened at the hospital. When she mentioned the call in which Zhang Yue conspired to murder him, Gu Changan's face darkened like thunderclouds rolling in.
If he'd only suspected Zhang Yue a little before—maybe three percent—now he was a hundred percent certain. No wonder Zhang Yue had been pushing so hard for a quick demolition and even dragged him out for lunch to delay him. It had all been part of the plan.
"Xixi, you're still not well. Go back to the hospital with your mother," Gu Changan said firmly. He had already made up his mind—there was no more room for leniency now.
Gu Xi glanced over and saw that Yu Dalong had already gathered men to surround Zhang Yue and his accomplices. She let out a quiet breath of relief. But then she thought of the mastermind pulling strings from the shadows. Her memories from her previous life surged forward, and she quickly warned her father.
"Dad, be careful of Fuhua Real Estate and Jiangdong Industries."
"What?" Gu Changan turned sharply to her. "They're involved in this?"
"Not just involved," Gu Xi said gravely. "I heard Fuhua just received a large capital injection. Their second-largest shareholder has changed."
