Chapter 14
Gu Changan and Yu Dalong looked over in shock. Although Yu Dalong was visibly surprised, he didn't hesitate.
As he finessed the wire into the lock, there was a faint click, and the rusted iron door creaked open from the inside.
Suddenly, a man with blood smeared across his face fell forward and landed heavily on top of Yu Dalong, knocking him backward onto the floor.
"Ah! There's someone in there!"
The force of the fall left Yu Dalong stunned. He blinked in disbelief, then reached out with a trembling hand to check the man's neck for a pulse.
"He's still alive," Yu Dalong murmured in relief, only then realizing he'd just been used as a human cushion.
"Call an ambulance!" Gu Changan shouted. The shock was written all over his face—no wonder Xixi had been so adamant about halting the demolition. There had been something wrong.
"We need to call the police too!" Gu Xi said firmly. "He's clearly been beaten and drugged. Otherwise, how could he be in such a state and still unconscious?"
Her words snapped Gu Changan to attention. She was right. This wasn't just an accident—this was a crime. Someone had deliberately locked a man in a hidden room, intending to leave him to die when the house was demolished. If Gu Xi hadn't intervened in time, that man would've been buried alive.
Gu Changan's expression darkened. As a seasoned businessman, he knew the kind of fallout a case like this could cause. If a body had been discovered post-demolition, not only would his position as general manager be at risk—he could also face criminal charges.
His mind raced through the potential consequences. If something happened to him, what would become of his fragile wife? Of his cherished daughter? His fists clenched. Whoever had planned this was ruthless—but did they really think he'd go down without a fight?
"Manager Zhang, where do you think you're going?" Gu Xi's cold voice cut through the tension. She spotted Zhang Yue inching along the wall, trying to slip away unnoticed.
"I was going to call a taxi," Zhang Yue said with a forced smile, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "This man looks seriously injured. Why wait for an ambulance when we can get him to the hospital right away?"
But Yu Dalong had already checked the man's vitals. "He's stable—just unconscious. His injuries aren't life-threatening," he reported. "Boss Gu, we shouldn't move him. The police need to see everything exactly as it is."
Gu Changan nodded grimly. He pulled out his phone and dialed the police, then immediately called for an ambulance.
