Cherreads

Chapter 5 - Grudge

Song Kiro was getting close to the end of the testing when the infant finally stopped crying. He felt relieved.

Who would prefer to listen to a screaming baby, after all?

The spiritual testing instrument in his hand just needed to take in a few more measurements, and then it would give a reading.

If the reading was high, then it indicated that there was spiritual compatibility. Cultivation would be possible.

If the reading was low…

He pressed the spiritual testing instrument to the tiny knee of the infant, counting in his head.

One. Two. Three.

Suddenly, the instrument was kicked away. Song Kiro lurched forward, before catching himself.

He gave a hard look at the infant. The innocent black eyes stared back at him.

Song Kiro checked the spiritual testing instrument. The lights indicated that the test could continue where it had left off. Thankfully, he would not have to restart the process from the beginning.

He moved the instrument back to the little knee…kicked away again.

This time Song Kiro was not thrown off balance, but he still shook his head. What a feisty baby.

Song Kiro suddenly felt a premonition. No…

He looked down at the lights on the spiritual testing instrument.

Damn.

The lights had changed.

The instrument had aborted the test.

Song Kiro felt a headache coming. He had almost finished. Now, not only did he have to restart the test, but he also needed to watch out for the baby's kicks.

His anger suddenly flared.

Little monster, I preferred when you were crying.

Song Kiro reached over, pressing the spiritual testing instrument against the infant's upper arm. The first reading would need to be taken again.

He held the end of the instrument against the bicep, keeping it steady so that the reading would not be warped. He began counting.

One. Two-

The arm moved. The instrument was dislodged, and the reading was canceled.

Little demon, just sit still!

Song Kiro shook his head, trying to swallow his emotions. The other party was only a baby after all. It would not look good if he lost his temper.

He reached out and grabbed the arm of the baby firmly. He made sure not to apply too much pressure, but he still fully expected the little demon to cry out.

The arm began to squirm, but there was no wailing.

He was slightly surprised. The baby had demonstrated impressive pain tolerance for a newborn.

However, it was still impossible to keep the little arm steady enough to take a proper reading with the spiritual testing instrument.

And no matter what, the testing needed to be completed…

Song Kiro had been holding back with his strength, not wanting to hurt the baby. For a moment he contemplated whether he should pin down its limbs. Using more force seemed to be the easiest way to work around its incessant desire to move.

He began to clamp his hand around the arm, exerting his strength.

By chance, his eyes connect to those of the infant.

Large, innocent black eyes. They held no awareness of what was happening. There was no light behind them.

Song Kiro suddenly felt bad.

How could he hold a grudge against an infant?

It was completely unaware of the trouble it was causing. Everything was inadvertent.

In addition, it would likely be taken away by the Mo Family. Even if it was born from two Martial Warriors, what were the chances that it had the talent to cultivate, that it had the so-called 'immortal fate?'

Dreadfully low.

Hadn't there been three children before it?

Every one of them had also been born from the Third Manager and Mistress Isana. And every one of them had been taken by the Mo Family…

In all likelihood, this infant would follow in the footsteps of its brothers and sisters. Whatever the Mo Family did with its infants behind closed doors, it was unknown to the world, but it certainly wasn't an orthodox practice.

The baby would either die, or experience a life worse than death.

In light of its fate…

The squirming might be infuriating, but how could he hold a grudge?
