Cassandra Ricci - POV
"Thank you for dropping me home." I thanked Arlo when a smile appeared on his face.
"Not an issue. So, I will see you on the Cupid's Day ball?" he asked me with an arched eyebrow.
"Oh, I am not planning to go for that. I have to go and meet Alpha Bellucci the next day." I answered.
"It's an important event among our kind, Cassandra. I don't think you should miss it. Moreover, this must be your first cupid's Day, I assume?" he asked me when I nodded my head. "Just come here and stay for a while. It would be good to socialize with the other witches and wizards as well." he insisted, and I knew I couldn't refuse.
"Okay, I will be there."
"Great, so shall I pick you up?" he asked me when I felt a sense of fear grip me. Arlo and I are from completely different social classes, and even though we went to the same high school, I know his parents or the high-ranking officials would not be very happy to see us together.
"No, Abigail is going to that event as well. I will come with her." I politely declined, even though he looked like he wanted to argue, and he nodded his head.
"Good night, Cassandra."
"Good night, Arlo," I told him as I got down from his car and made my way to my house. I unlocked the front door and walked in, and as I locked it, I heard him pull out of the driveway. I looked at the time to see that it was close to eight, so I walked to the kitchen and made myself a simple sandwich, and walked up to my room.
I placed the plate on the bedside table and I was about to call Chris when my phone rang. "Hello?"
"Already looking for your next boyfriend, Cassie? Arlo looks like he is far out of your league though," he asked me, which made a cold shiver run down my spine.
"How did you know I came home with Arlo?" I asked him when I looked out of my window, but I couldn't see anyone.
"I have my ways. I have people watching your every move, so that you don't do anything stupid. Now, what did your elders say?" he asked me.
"I got accepted. But I am on a probationary period of three months or less, unless they find a replacement." I told him.
"That sounds like enough time," he mumbled to himself.
"What do I have to steal, Chris?" I asked him.
"Steal? You think I want you inside that pack because I want you to steal something from them?" he asked me, making me look stupid.
"What else do you need then?" I asked him. I can't think of anything else that the wolves would have that Chris would want.
"I want you to kill Theodore," he said it so casually that it took me a few seconds to register what he said. But as his words sank in, a cold shiver ran down my spine while a thin layer of sweat coated my forehead.
"I…I can't do that, Chris! That would only create a war between our kind, and I would be executed before I could even get out of there." I whisper-yelled. He must be crazy if he thinks I would kill an alpha.
"You will do it, Cassie. And I don't care about the consequences you face. You are a witch, and I know you can get away with it without getting caught. Now, I want you to kill Theodore, and I will handle the rest."
"I can't do that, Chris." I firmly stated.
"Do you love your mother at all, Cassandra?" he asked me in a mocking tone. "Yes, there is a possibility for you to get caught, but I will help you get out of that pack," he said, but my conscience didn't want to do it. What he is asking for may seem insignificant to him, but it would cause chaos with both our species, and I would have to be on the run for the rest of my life.
"You are asking for something that would disturb the delicate balance between our species, Chris," I told him as I felt my blood boil in anger.
"Listen, Cassandra. Sometimes, you need to be selfish in this world to live your life in peace. Do you want to live the rest of your life with the guilt of killing both your parents? You don't even know Alpha Bellucci, he is not related to you, so you won't feel guilty even if you kill him. I will give you twenty-four hours to decide, Cassandra. Do you want your mother back or do you want to save the life of an alpha you have never even met in your life?"
My mind was working in overload right now when Chris disconnected the call. What am I going to do now?
I placed my phone on the bed and lay down next to it as I closed my eyes, my mind still in a dilemma.
Bang bang!
I jolted awake when I looked around my room to see that it was morning already. "Cassie!" I heard Abigail's voice when I quickly got up from bed and ran downstairs to open the door.
"Hey, I am sorry, I must have overslept," I told her as I let her in.
"That's all right, I brought you breakfast," she said when she showed me the paper bag in her hand.
"Thank you so much, Abby. Give me five minutes, and I will be right back." I told her when she nodded her head. I walked back upstairs and quickly took a shower and changed my clothes.
As I walked into the kitchen, I saw that Abigail had already plated our food. "How did the interview go?" she asked me as I took a seat opposite her.
"I got the job. But I am on probation until I get another pack." I told her when she nodded her head.
