Episode 22: The Devil's Warning

They returned through the portal in silence.
Lucien held Kael. Evelyn held herself.
The boy slept, breathing shallow but alive. His small hand clutched a scorched feather — no one knew how it got there.
Lucien placed him gently on the bed inside their makeshift camp.
"We need to move soon," he said. "Seraphina won't stop."
Evelyn nodded, though her heart wasn't in it.
She had knelt before fate…
And something inside her cracked.

Night fell.
The fire crackled low.
That's when he appeared.
Lucien stood first. His aura bristled.
"You dare show yourself now?" he growled.
The shadows peeled apart — and from them stepped Lucifer himself.
Not the twisted beast of nightmares. Not the winged horror preachers feared.
He was beautiful.
A man of immortal stillness and dangerous grace.
"I only came to speak," he said, his voice velvet laced with ash.

Evelyn stood, fists clenched. "Then speak."
Lucifer turned his gaze on her — golden eyes that saw too much.
"You knelt before the Watcher. That changes everything."
"I did it for Kael."
"And now, child of storm, you wear a mark no one can remove."
She froze. "What do you mean?"
Lucien stepped between them. "Explain. Now."
Lucifer sighed, almost… softly.
"When you knelt in the Veil, you made a pact. Not just with the Watcher. With the balance itself."

Evelyn's voice cracked. "What did I give up?"
Lucifer looked her in the eye.
"Your soul is now tethered. If you die, the Veil opens. If Kael dies… it devours."
Lucien swore under his breath. "She didn't agree to that!"
"Fate doesn't wait for consent," Lucifer said.
Then he stepped closer, and for a moment, the devil looked almost human.
"I warned them not to drag you into this. But Seraphina… she's playing her own game."

Evelyn's heart pounded. "What game?"
Lucifer turned, shadows curling at his heels. "She's not trying to rule the world, Evelyn. She's trying to unmake it."
"What?"
"She believes the world is a curse. That it was a mistake the gods made… and she wants to erase it completely."
Silence.
Lucien looked pale.
Evelyn whispered, "So what do we do?"
Lucifer looked back one last time.
"You run. You learn. You gather your fire."
His smile was sharp.
"Because when the time comes… you'll have to kill her."
