Chapter 8 - Chapter 7

Chapter 7

"Then hurry up and open the door!" Jake shouted. "There are man-eating monsters everywhere out here—I almost didn't make it back!"

I wiped away a few fake tears and answered with a sob in my voice.

"Baby, I didn't know the apocalypse would come so suddenly. I was just out buying groceries, and now I'm stuck at the supermarket. Can you come pick me up?"

But before I could finish, he exploded.

"Are you crazy, you stupid woman? Why the hell would you go to the supermarket at the end of the world? And now you want me to pick you up? Are you trying to get me killed?!"

"You never told me when the apocalypse would start. How was I supposed to know? I only went because you wanted cigarettes!" I said pitifully, trying to sound as aggrieved as possible.

But Jake wasn't having it.

"I never told you to go! You went on your own. Don't try to blame this on me!"

"Now get your ass back here! I'm stuck outside the door because of you, and I can't even get in!"

Then he hung up on me.

I stared at the screen and sneered.

If you don't love me, then just say it. Why bother making up so many excuses?

In my past life, when Bai Yueguang was the one trapped, he risked everything to rescue her.

But when it's me—suddenly it's too dangerous?

And let's be honest. You're not locked out because of me. You're locked out because you went out to pick her up.

Fine. If you didn't want to pick her up, you shouldn't have. Either way, I'm not the one stuck in the hallway.

I sighed, picked up a slice of beef from the hot pot, dipped it in sesame sauce, and popped it into my mouth. Tender, fragrant, utterly delicious.

Outside the door, Jake was still venting to Bai Yueguang.

"She's stuck in the damn supermarket and expects me to go pick her up. With all those monsters outside—how the hell am I supposed to do that?"

He kicked a cup of instant noodles in frustration.

Then, perhaps still stewing in anger, he turned and kicked the alloy security door.

Bad idea.

The door was built to withstand force—stronger than concrete.

Jake immediately grabbed his leg and howled in pain.

Still unwilling to give up, he slammed his fist against the door. His face twisted in agony as the pain registered a second later.

"What now? We can't just stay out here," Bai Yueguang asked, voice trembling. "Maybe… maybe you should go pick her up? Once she opens the door, we'll just kick her out again."

Jake snapped, "There are zombies everywhere! If you want to go, be my guest. I'm not moving."

Then he muttered, "Didn't we still have some food in our backpacks? Let's just hold out a couple days until that stupid woman comes crawling back."

With that, he pulled Bai Yueguang down the hallway, away from the front door.

They slipped into a small room tucked in the corner—formed by the angle between my apartment and the stairwell. Barely ten square meters.

Originally, the developer had planned to sell it as a studio, but no one wanted such a cramped space. So they had simply sealed it off with a door and left it unused.

The door wasn't locked. Jake pushed it open and pulled Bai Yueguang inside.

Fortunately, I'd thought of this.

I had guessed that, if they couldn't get into the apartment, they might try hiding in that little storage room.

So I installed a surveillance camera there too—just in case.

Now, all I had to do was sit back, eat my hot pot, and enjoy the show.
