Chapter 5 - Chapter 4

Chapter 4

Three days passed in the blink of an eye.

Thanks to the extra money I kept throwing in, my shelter was completed in just three days. Jake's, on the other hand, was only halfway done.

The supplier delivered the bulk order of supplies to my transition depot, just as scheduled.

Taking advantage of the empty neighborhood during midday, I quietly moved the supplies into my shelter, trip by trip.

Four industrial freezers arrived as well, along with the drones, surveillance gear, and telescope I'd ordered online.

I installed several pinhole cameras at the entrance of the house, ensuring there were no blind spots. Once security was in place, I headed to a nearby slaughterhouse.

There, I bought 200 pounds each of fresh pork, beef, and lamb—still steaming from the kill—and brought it all back.

After wrapping everything up, I leisurely drove a van back to Jake's place.

He was clearly annoyed to see that after being gone for days, I'd only returned with one van of supplies.

But what really frustrated him was the fact that with the apocalypse approaching, his shelter still wasn't finished.

He clenched his jaw, fists tight with helpless rage.

And me? I could barely keep from grinning behind his back.

"Even if you finish it," I thought, "you really think you'll be the one living in it?"

With the world falling apart any day now, Jake was desperate to win me over—and get more money out of me. So, naturally, he suggested a trip to the supermarket together.

Fine by me. My preparations were complete. And I couldn't afford to make him suspicious.

At the store, the first place he dragged me to was the snack aisle. He turned to me with a charming smile.

"Baby, don't you love chips? Let's stock up on them. Even in the apocalypse, my girl should always have her favorite snacks."

He then started dumping entire shelves of potato chips into the cart.

I forced a smile, but inside, I was sneering.

We'd been together for years, and he still didn't know—I hate potato chips.

Back in my previous life, Jake had hoarded boxes of chips. I assumed he was too stressed preparing for the end times to remember my preferences.

Only later did I realize—it wasn't forgetfulness.

His precious first love adored chips. Those weren't for me—they were for her.

But the end wasn't here yet, and the show had to go on.

I knew exactly why Jake had dragged me here. Still playing the doting girlfriend, I wrapped my arms around him, pretending to be deeply moved.

Then, with a flourish, I transferred him another 200,000 yuan.

With the money in hand, his construction team sped up noticeably.

That night, I casually picked up his phone while he was in the shower and "accidentally" opened a chat window.

Then I turned to him, phone in hand, and asked, "Honey, who's this?"

The moment he saw I'd found his chats with the first love, he panicked—stammering, sweating, completely at a loss for words.

I, however, put on a relaxed, understanding face and said sweetly:

"If you really like her, why not bring her over? The world's about to end anyway. The three of us living together might actually be safer."

Jake froze, blinking in shock.

"You don't mind?"

I let out a soft sigh and looked down, pretending to be heartbroken but understanding.

"What's the point of minding? Cats will always chase fish. Rather than constantly guarding against you, why not just… accept it?

"Besides, back in ancient times, men had three wives and four concubines. And truthfully, I can't survive the apocalypse without you."

His face lit up like a Christmas tree.

"Flying flags outside, the red banner at home still flies high," he joked with a laugh, thumping his chest. "Even if she comes, you'll always be the one I love most!"
