Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: The Fool Reads Transmigration Diary

After discussing the informant topic, Evah enthusiastically chatted with Klein about Beyonder's knowledge, fully embodying his teacher persona before seeing Klein off, who needed to head home for dinner.

Watching Klein's trackless carriage disappear into the distance, Evah returned inside. The naive, college-student grin faded from his face. He stretched, chuckled, and muttered, "Klein, such a good guy…"

He really did enjoy dealing with good people.

If nothing else, this exchange would've sent him soaring if Klein were a big shot—borrowing demigod-level power at least.

"Too bad, but being an angel investor isn't half bad…" Evah mused to himself. He headed back to his second-floor laboratory, where a half-carved charm lay on the desk, spiritual materials scattered nearby, and an open book sat to the right.

Evah approached the workbench, tossed the half-finished charm's runes into the trash, and started fresh with new materials. After crafting one charm, he yawned but didn't continue practicing.

He tidied the desk, left the house, and arrived at an unoccupied apartment—another of his safe houses, used for receiving certain letters from Backlund.

Opening the mailbox, he found a single letter inside, its envelope unmarked by a postmark, clearly hand-delivered.

Evah took the letter, entered the safe house, and opened it. The letter was from Mr. A in Backlund, detailing intelligence on recently active Beyonders in the city—part of Luo Lin's deal with the Aurora Order.

At the end, Mr. A mentioned something else: someone had been acquiring Roselle's diaries recently, and per Evah's instructions, he'd sold the diaries Evah provided.

Evah raised an eyebrow, a playful smile curling his lips. "So, my Transmigration Diary might soon show up at the Tarot Club. It's a Shame I'm not a member yet…"

"When Mr. Fool sees the diary, he'll probably start guessing about my background. He'll wonder if I wrote it and divine the answer. That way, next time we meet, I'll know if the gray fog can block interference from Nyarlathotep's Fragment…"

Evah muttered to himself. He'd deliberately crafted his current persona for this test.

Even if Klein divined that the diary came from him, it wouldn't matter—a naive, playful college student forging Roselle diaries for cash? To him..it's normal.

Evah's thoughts drifted to Backlund's "salted fish duo." After a moment, he pulled out paper to write a letter—not to Mr. A, but to Xio and Fors.

In it, he first greeted Xio and Fors warmly, politely inquired about their progress investigating The Fool, and then wrote:

"…I've learned that the Abraham family was a noble house in the Fourth Epoch's Tudor Empire. Due to their loyalty to the Blood Emperor, they were at odds with the Trunsoest Empire. Could it be that the curse afflicting the Abraham family is tied to the Trunsoest Empire?

We know Backlund was once part of the Trunsoest Empire, and certain noble families were loyal to it. Perhaps their ancient libraries hold records on this.

Maybe we could try contacting Backlund's nobles to gain such knowledge.

Your loyal friend,

Jack Jones."

Evah's goal with this letter was to nudge Xio and Fors toward contacting Audrey and other nobles. With his butterfly effect in play, he wasn't sure if Fors would still, as in the original story, approach Audrey to bail Xio out of jail.

Evah wasn't one to sit idle, so he took the initiative. The salted fish duo might slack on other things, but when it came to the full moon curse, even they'd get serious.

After finishing the letter to the duo, Evah started writing more—to Mr. A and Azik. Checking his pocket watch, he saw it was past 9 p.m. and shook his head. "This sleep schedule… I'm really gonna drop dead one day."

Nine p.m. wasn't late, but after three days without sleep, Evah felt like he was one step from ascending to the heavens.

"Forget it, better listen to advice and rest," he said, shaking his head. He went to the post office, mailed the letters, and returned home to catch up on sleep.

Monday, 3 p.m.

Klein held his third Tarot Club meeting.

He first congratulated Miss Justice on advancing to Sequence 9 Spectator, then collected Roselle diaries from Mr. Hanged Man and Miss Justice, kicking off the Tarot Club's traditional activity: The Fool reading Roselle's diaries.

The first three pages were unremarkable, detailing Roselle's post-transmigration antics—playing One Piece pirate gags, discovering a nameless island, resisting an arranged marriage before embracing it. Klein gleaned various insights while inwardly snarking.

But when he turned to the fourth page—Audrey's second diary—he froze. It read:

"June 29, Sunny.

It's been three days since I arrived in this world…"

The entry was short, recounting a transmigrator who wanted to lie low but found their new identity had a powerful enemy. They became a Marauder to fight back, only to be caught by the enemy soon after.

Yet, in the previous three pages, Klein had read about Roselle joining the Church of the Eternal Blazing Sun as a Savant, with his post-transmigration family being the Gustavs. This page, however, described the diarist transmigrating into a family called Zoroast.

And their great enemy? Amon.

"Unless Roselle was bored out of his mind forging his own diaries, this last page probably belongs to another transmigrator," Klein muttered to himself, surprisingly calm.

He was used to it by now. Right after transmigrating, he'd learned of Roselle, the transmigrator predecessor who'd caused all sorts of chaos. Then, days later, he met Jack Jones, a fellow "hometown" transmigrator. So, he was already prepared for the idea that this world might have multiple transmigrators—maybe even a lot of them.
