Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 Bump in the Road! The Empire's strongest defense line is actually empty

"Killing carrion isn't that hard." Fielder's confidence grew as he casually shook off the tainted blood on his sword.

"Lord Lord be careful!"

Another half-bodied carrion, taking advantage of the opening, crawled in and was about to tear at Fielder's ankle. At the critical moment, Ashina copied the dung fork from the wooden wheelbarrow and ruthlessly thrust it into the walker's spine, nailing it to the ground.

"Whew! Well done!"

Fielder broke out in a cold sweat and took a few steps back, his heart thumping furiously as he was almost hit!

Although necrotic poison could be cured by the clergy of the church, the cost was incomparably high, without a hundred gold coins, don't even think about curing it.

Barely able to slow down from the violent heart palpitations, Fielder let out a long breath, rubbed Ashina's head, and thanked, "As a favor for saving your life, I will reward you with a gold coin, Ashina!"

Ashena was overjoyed, her eyes turned golden, she hadn't seen that much money since she was a little girl, "Eh? Really? Actually, this is what I should do."

The rotting corpses weren't like the zombies in horror movies, as long as you stabbed them with a weapon, it would cause damage to the rotting corpses.

More carrion corpses swarmed up, attacking the wall of carts surrounded by wooden wheeled carts with open teeth and claws.

But the slaves behind the caravan saw that the carrion wasn't strong enough to attack them through the wooden wheelbarrow. What's more, their lord, as well as the weak girl dared to fight back, and many of the men picked up farming tools and launched counterattacks against the walkers outside the cart formation.

Fielder was not ambiguous either, and raised his sword to continue killing the enemy.

As blood splattered one by one, a large number of carrion corpses fell under the farm implements and Fielder's long sword.

"Wow!"

At the same time, a miserable scream was heard. A cavalryman under Connor, while stepping into formation, was grabbed by a carrion dressed as a village woman by its cloak, and with a fierce tug, the cavalryman fell backward with his legs scrambling.

"Ka-ching~"

With the sudden fall, the back of the cavalryman's head knocked on the ground, immediately rendering the unlucky man motionless.

Connor cursed angrily in anger, "Grass! Rubbish!"

What made him even more angry was that Feld wasn't actually scared shitless, but was calmly commanding the slaves.

"Cut off the head of each corpse, then pile them into one and burn them on the spot." Fielder was badgering the knowledge of corruption along the way, these corrupted humans, the corpses after death are extremely harmful to the environment, leaving them unattended will soon form a new source of pollution, Fielder frowned, hesitantly looking at the gray fog in the distance that connects the street to the sky, "It's really not a good omen to come across so many zombies before we even arrive at the Nightfall Collar."

Even though the family looked at themselves unfavorably and wanted to exile themselves, it was too cruel to drive them to the pile of corpses.

"Thank you for your help, my lord."

The fleeing refugee walked up on his knees as if he had seen his own father, then prostrated himself in front of Feld and kissed his boots.

"May the God of War light your way!"

Fielder accepted it openly, scanned these refugees who were in a sorry state like beggars, and inquired, "Where do you come from? How come there are so many carrion corpses, those corrupted creatures, shouldn't they be blocked by the towering walls of the Click Mountain Fortress?"

"It's the Death Haze! Those gray mists from the northern realm penetrated the walls of the fortress and enveloped our Ork village. Since it was night, the vast majority of the village was corrupted by the gray mist in their sleep and became rotting corpses, and only we escaped." The villagers were terrified, as if they had recalled extremely horrifying memories, and their entire body shook like sifting chaff.

The Gray Mist, also known as the Death Haze, was said to be the root cause of corruption, they were mixed in the air, and when inhaled by plants and animals, they would quickly kill the host and transform them into corrupted monsters.

Those with Lordship abilities, or the Chosen of God, are the only ones immune to it.

The other thing was to purchase the Church's Atonement Lamp, which could dispel the gray fog. Of course, the price was expensive, and Felder spent fifty gold coins to buy two of them, or for the sake of the nobles.

After listening to their confidences quietly, Fielder frowned and said, ''Where is your Lord Lord? As far as I know, every border fortress will have a Divine Chosen sitting on it, and it's impossible to let the gray mist infiltrate."

"The Baron and the Divine Chosen went to investigate the cult's trail, and only the Baron's son is inside the castle."

"Let's go, let's go meet the owner of this place." When the crowd had finished straightening up, Field straddled the horse.

To reach the Nightfall Collar, one needed to be released by the local baron.

Upon arriving at the Click Mountain Fortress, Field was shocked by the lofty fortress, the rolling stone walls and archetypal towers, together with the mountain ranges, formed a sturdy and towering defense system, the walls where horses could be pushed across were equipped with crossbows, stone throwers and frying pans and fire pans everywhere, with this kind of armament, even if an army of 100,000 soldiers surrounded it, it would not be able to do anything except bumping their heads into each other. There were griffin banners hunting everywhere, speaking of the majesty of the old empire.

But the biggest problem was.

"Where are the people?"

Feld was dumbfounded, there was not a single person on the entire outer wall, as far as the eye could see, it was bare.

Connor was also frightened, his face was white, "It can't be a surprise attack by the orcs! If the orcs break through the Click Mountain Fortress, the entire province will fall in an instant."

"It shouldn't be, otherwise it wouldn't be so quiet."

Well after advancing for some distance, Feld saw torches burning on the fortress' inner city.

"Stay away, who are you?" Someone shouted from the wall, and under the reflection of the torches, the heads of the people were packed, so it was evident that the castle was full of soldiers.

Why did they suddenly abandon the outer military stronghold? Feld questioned.

"I am Baron Feld of the Ross family, heading to the Nightfall Collar to take up my position, please open the gates of the Click Mountain Fortress and let us out."

The officer who shouted appeared to be in a difficult position, and after a moment of hesitation called a young man who was none other than Baron Bull's son.

"No way! No one will trick the castle gates until my father returns! Get out of here or release the arrows."

Hearing the determined response from the ramparts, Feld's mouth twitched, guessing that the young man had been scared out of his wits by the carrion, and immediately shouted, "It's me, Feld, and I donated money to this place, remember? I'm not your enemy."

"Isn't it just a few stinking dollars? The entire empire has to send money to the border, who the hell are you, you deserve to be remembered by me. Stinking foreigner, running to the Bull Collar to disgrace yourself."

"Numb, it's true that nobles don't have many good things." Field's teeth were almost clenched, the original owner's last act of kindness, ended with a waterfall, if not for Field's lack of soldiers, he could not wait to attack the city immediately, but he still patiently said, "These villagers, I saved them halfway, you..."

Before Felder could finish, he heard the sound of abuse.

"Damn, are you tired of the food in my castle? Who asked you to save those stupid things! Nosy fellow, if you dare to bring them one step closer, I'll immediately release my arrows."
