Cherreads

Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20

In about thirty minutes, the food was ready and I must confess it tasted extremely good. Even way better than mine. Dante went out afterwards and I stayed in and tried to rest some more. Missy stopped by briefly to check up on me and we discussed the schedule for the next day and that was it.

I hurriedly rushed to the bathroom to shower quickly, I had missed my alarms and I was already late for work. The house was dead silent, I had no idea if Dante came back home the previous night or if he left to work early. I got ready and headed for the office. I had to make a quick stop at the laundroMat to get help taking off a stain from the shirt I wore the previous day. I spilled some Pasta sauce over it accidentally and even with my attempts to wash it off, it didn't budge. I dropped the shirt off with the Laundromat staff.

Walking back to my car, the sound of loud car horns blazed my ears terribly and the brightness of the scorching sun blurred my vision.

"Hey! Look out", I heard some scream from behind me and before I could turn to see what was going on, I felt a massive hit that threw me off the road. My body landed on the ground and pain surged through my entire body.

"Don't close your eyes, stay with me" a voice said, holding my hands tightly and suddenly I gave into the darkness that clouded me.

Surrounded by beeping sounds of monitors and bright lights, an oxygen mask over my face and some pulse oximeter probes clipped to my fingers, I was confused as I opened my eyes.

"Oh my goodness, you're awake" Dante said, squeezing my hand tightly.

I winced in pain, all my body was hurting terribly.

"What happened? Is my baby okay?" I panicked and attempted to lift myself up from the bed.

"Just breathe, calm down", he was holding me firmly, I was extremely worried. All I could think of was my baby and I began to sob at the thought of what could have possibly gone wrong.

"Tell me, what happened?" I asked, wailing.

Dante pulled me into a tight embrace, stroking my hair and hugging me tightly, it was comforting but it didn't kill my worry.

"The baby is fine," he finally said.

I heaved a sigh of relief and began to sob again, my heart had ripped into a million pieces just thinking about it.

"You scared me. I thought I-" he paused for a moment. "We all thought something drastic had happened to you, but I'm glad you're okay and the baby too"

"What exactly happened? How did I end up here" All I could remember was me walking out of the Laundromat.

"You were hit by a car, the police are currently investigating and I promise you they'll find the person who hit you. You should lay back and rest" he said, supporting my back to properly lay down.

"I'll be back, I need to get the nurse" he said and left the room.

Shortly he arrived with the nurse and I noticed a very familiar figure standing by the door. She was the nurse, yea but then.

"Mom?" I was in shock. I hadn't seen my mother in years and this was the most awkward way to meet again.

"Her vitals are okay but she'll need to be here for a day or two so we can properly make sure she's all good" My mom said to Dante, paying no heed to me.

I was devastated, even in the condition that I was in, she wasn't at all fascinated or excited to see me. 'She must really hate me', I thought to myself. I sharply wiped off the tears that dropped out from my eyes with the back of my palm and she left the room ushering Dante to the doctor's office.

My mind raced as they both left. I was worried Dante would say something to her and I was also extremely worried about the doctor's report. I really hoped the baby was totally fine. My anxiety heightened when time went by and Dante had not returned.

"Hi, have you by any chance seen my husband?" I asked the younger nurse who came in to give me my medications. It felt really heavy, me referring to Dante as my husband.

"Yes ma'am, I saw him walking talking to the senior nurse on the walkway before he went into the doctor's office. I believe he's still in there" she replied calmly with a smile.

I took the meds and I was worrying even more. What would Dante have been talking to my mom about? Why was it taking so long for him to get back? And just as I was contemplating standing up from the bed to find my mom to talk to her, Dante walked into the room.

"Is everything okay?" I asked curiously.

"Umm, yea. Yes" he replied without giving any details.

From the look on my face he could tell I was interested in the details about what the doctor had to say. He walked closer and sat beside me on the bed.

"Due to the pressure in your system from the accident, the baby would have to come earlier than expected," he said, clearing his throat.

I was confused. "Earlier? What does that mean?" I asked.

"At seven months you will have to undergo a cesarean session. If the baby stays in longer, it might be a problem for the baby's well being" he said looking away.

I could see that he was worried even though he was trying his best to conceal it.

"I think after you get discharged from here, we'll have to visit the private doctor for further checks and confirm if this is really what you need" he said moving closer to me.

My face reddened as I began to sob uncontrollably.

"No, no, don't cry now. Everything will be alright. I won't let anything happen to you or the baby, I promise" Dante said, hugging me again.
