Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22

"Will you go in with me or do you prefer to sit in the car and wait?" Dante asked as we pulled up in the parking lot of the police station.

Though I was curious to know the situation, involvement with the police scared me a little so I opted to stay in the car and wait. Flashbacks of the whole day ran through my mind and a wide smile played on my lips. I was extremely happy I had finally reunited with my mom and I couldn't wait to meet my dad and younger sister again. I knew I had to thank Dante for it, he must have definitely said something to convince my mother to let go of our beef. I was intrigued by how much care he showed me in recent times and I was grateful for it.

It took about twenty minutes before Dante returned to the car holding a brown envelope in his hands.

"They caught the guy. He'll be meeting up with a judge tomorrow," he said, slamming the door as he sat back in the car.

I was relieved. "Alright, good and what's in the envelope?" I asked, gesturing towards the envelope in his hands.

"Ohh this, just pictures from the camera footage of the accident scene" he replied and tucked it in his jacket.

"Don't worry, you don't have to look at it so you don't get triggered" he said dismissively.

He had a valid point but something about it felt suspicious to me and my intrusive thoughts never failed me but like he said, to avoid me getting triggered, I decided to let it go.

We arrived home and while I went in to have a proper bath and get rid of all the hospital ickiness from my body, Dante settled in the kitchen to make dinner. I was really nervous, my dad and younger sister were coming over also and I didn't know how my sister, Daphne would react, if they even agreed to come but I was hoping for the best.

I got dressed in a casual mini dress and fixed my hair in a high ponytail. I ran through my jewelry box to scan through for what necklace to wear and the necklace Dante had given me months ago caught my eye. It has been a while since I last wore it and it looked good with my outfit so I decided to go for it.

I paused in the mirror to access the whole look and my baby bump was a whole accessory on its own. Thinking of the situation at hand and the early delivery, I was disturbed but I was trying to stay positive, hoping that I and my baby will be fine.

As I walked to the kitchen to meet Dante, the brown envelope he had collected from the police station caught my eye and I gave in to my curiosity. I quietly walked to the table and picked it up and in it were pictures from the accident scene like Dante had told me, but there was an extra paper folded inside. I opened it to read and the report stated that the accident had been a deliberate attempt to kill me.

"Sienna" Dante called out hurriedly, taking the papers from my hands.

I gasped in shock, fear lacing my veins. "Someone is trying to harm me?"

His eyes softened as he pulled me in his gentle embrace "I promise you're safe with me"

Leaning against his chest, I couldn't shake off the feeling that this was just the beginning of whatever awful plans they had in store for me.

The doorbell rang and I jolted and hesitated a bit before letting Dante go to attend to the door. As expected, my mom was there, alone. I was quite disappointed, I was hoping my father and sister would come along but I was off to a good start. I knew my dad didn't hate me, it would just be best if I went over to visit him by myself and my sister. After the encounter we had, I really didn't know how things would work out with her but I was determined to make it work.

Dinner was a bit odd. For some reason Dante was oddly quiet and my mind was also drifting away subconsciously. I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that there was someone out there trying to harm me. Who could it be? I wondered. In the few months I had spent in the city, I haven't encountered anyone who I could have possibly wronged and offended so how then could someone just randomly be after my life, it didn't make any sense to me.

"The food tastes really good, I'm proud of you" my mom said, patting my hand on the table. Her voice brought my mind back to reality and I obviously couldn't take credit for the meal because it was Dante who cooked it. "Oh, it's actually his cooking, not mine," I said, feeling slightly ashamed.

"Oh how lovely, not once did your father ever offer to cook. You must really be in love with my daughter" my mom said, teasingly smiling at Dante.

He responded with a smile. I could feel the atmosphere getting uncomfortable for both of us. I was certain my mom was eager to know how things ended with Marcus and I was even more surprised she hadn't seen the whole wedding between Dante and I trending all over social media and even the news, or she just decided to play pretend.

She tried to make up small talks all through the meal and Dante responded calmly with either a smile, a nod, or just a simple reply that didn't give off any details.

Dante got a call and excused himself to answer it and we were left alone together. I expected her to begin to throw questions at me but she didn't.

I focused on my meal, trying to rush it up so I could get some rest and I could feel her eyes rested on me.

"He really loves you, you know," she said. My eyes bulged and my jaw tightened.
