c40: An Ordinary Day
In the courtyard of Capsule Corporation, Li Xu sat quietly beside the crystal-clear swimming pool, lost in thought.
"Harnessing pure rage… it's not as simple as it sounds," he thought to himself.
His current combat power had already surpassed Goku's first Super Saiyan transformation during the battle on Planet Namek against Frieza, yet he still couldn't trigger that transformation himself.
Despite the heightened training he had endured in the universe beyond even the 100 times gravity Goku faced on his way to Namek Li Xu had yet to grasp the emotional breakthrough needed: that explosive rage from loss or desperation that unlocked the legendary form.
"Li Xu, what's on your mind? Why haven't you gone to train today?" Bulma approached, her voice laced with curiosity and a hint of concern.
"I am cultivating," Li Xu replied with a faint smile. Though he wasn't inside the gravity chamber, he considered emotional clarity and mental balance as vital a part of training as raw physical effort.
"Then take a break and come shopping with me today?" Bulma asked, her tone turning expectant, eyes gleaming.
"Sure."
Li Xu felt a pang of guilt. She was right to ask he'd spent too much time focused on power and not enough simply being with her.
"That's great!" Bulma chirped, planting a kiss on his cheek before darting off. "I'll go change clothes!"
Li Xu chuckled. "We're not in a rush today. Might as well take it easy."
An hour later, Li Xu started up one of the Capsule Corporation cars and pulled out of the drive.
Of course, the hour-long delay had only one cause Bulma's transformation process into "shopping mode." The sheer time she spent changing outfits made even Li Xu, who had once trained on distant planets for weeks without sleep, feel worn out.
They arrived within ten minutes at West City's largest commercial shopping district, a sprawling pedestrian zone filled with boutiques, cafes, and tech outlets.
"Li Xu, let's check out the clothing shops first!" Bulma beamed, locking arms with him as they strolled into a trendy fashion store. The feel of her pressing softly against him made Li Xu's thoughts drift momentarily.
"Welcome!" a clerk greeted them as the door chimed.
"Li Xu, what do you think of this one?" Bulma asked, holding a stylish green top against her frame.
"It looks great," Li Xu replied.
"And this one?" she asked again, now showing him a short black skirt.
"That's nice too."
Bulma pouted. "You're just saying that! Give me a proper opinion!"
Chuckling, Li Xu walked over to the rack and pulled out a flowing sapphire-blue dress. "I think this would suit you best try it on."
"Really?" Bulma's eyes lit up.
"You look good in anything, but blue brings out your elegance and cool temperament," he said honestly, recalling how she'd often worn blue in the early days—like during their trip to Namek or even in the early Dragon Ball arcs.
"Alright! I'll try it!" Bulma said, gleefully snatching the dress and rushing into the fitting room.
Moments later, she stepped out.
The dress had one shoulder cut slightly lower, revealing a soft curve. The fabric clung gracefully to her waist, accentuated with a tied ribbon, and the neckline left just enough to the imagination. Li Xu involuntarily swallowed, caught off-guard.
"Well?" she asked, her tone playful but uncertain.
"Nope. Change into something else," Li Xu said immediately, raising an eyebrow.
"What? I like it," Bulma replied with a small frown.
"It's too revealing. You can wear that for me, privately, but I don't want a crowd of strangers ogling you in public," Li Xu said firmly.
Bulma's cheeks turned crimson at his words, and she looked away shyly.
"Well… how about this one?" Li Xu said, handing her a slightly more modest blue variant, which still flattered her curves but with more coverage.
"Alright," Bulma nodded, retreating to the fitting room again. When she reemerged, the effect was just as striking classy, elegant, and uniquely her.
"Not bad!" Li Xu nodded in approval. The new dress complemented Bulma's elegance without being too revealing.
"Waiter, wrap up this dress," Li Xu said, gesturing toward the fitting piece.
"Of course, sir!"
"Wait, and pack the one from earlier too," Bulma added quickly.
As she walked back to Li Xu, she leaned in close and whispered, "I'll only wear that one at home."
"That's perfect," Li Xu replied with a grin.
The clerk quickly packed both outfits. Bulma casually swiped her Capsule Corporation platinum card, prompting Li Xu to chuckle inwardly. With Bulma's family fortune and the global reach of Capsule Corp, she could buy half the city without blinking. While Li Xu could easily earn money through competitions or capsule tech himself, with Bulma around, he never needed to think about finances.
Next, Li Xu accompanied Bulma through the entire West City shopping district. They stopped by boutiques, bookstores, a café, even a small robot pet shop. Bulma was clearly in high spirits, enjoying the casual day off, and Li Xu, though not a fan of crowds, found himself in good spirits as well.
As the sun began to set, Li Xu glanced at the overloaded cart trailing behind them, its bags piled like a tower. A dark line formed on his forehead—he hadn't trained under 100x gravity with this kind of endurance test.
"Bulma, maybe it's time to head home?" he suggested, smiling wryly.
"Okay, I think we've done enough for today," she giggled. "We'll finish the rest another day."
Bulma didn't actually need anything she simply enjoyed the experience, the little joys of civilian life. Watching her laugh so genuinely, Li Xu felt a rare sense of calm.
"Perhaps to truly master one's emotions… one must learn to live as an ordinary person. Only then can the heart be at peace." A small smile crossed his face as the realization dawned.
By the time they returned to Capsule Corporation, night had fallen. After dinner, Bulma quietly took the shopping bags and headed to her room.
Li Xu went to his training chamber for a light mental cultivation session, followed by a quick shower. Then he made his way to their room, only to find it empty.
"Bulma?"
"I'll be out in a second!" came her voice from the bathroom.
A few moments later, she emerged face slightly flushed, clearly a bit shy. Li Xu's eyes widened before he could stop himself.
"How's this?" she asked, trying to sound casual but clearly hoping for a reaction.
"I… I love it!" Li Xu stammered, recovering his composure with a laugh. Bulma was wearing sheer, elegant lingerie seductive, yet tasteful.
"So that's why you slipped away while shopping," he said. He now remembered the short time she had wandered off on her own earlier that day.
"Mhm," Bulma nodded with a small smile.
"Then I guess I won't hold back," Li Xu smirked and swept her off her feet, cradling her in his arms.
Moments later, the room was filled with whispers and laughter, the sounds of warmth and passion echoing well into the night.
...
The next morning, the golden sunlight filtered softly through the windows.
Li Xu turned to look at Bulma, who was still asleep beside him. A peaceful expression rested on her face. He couldn't help but smile. She had been especially dazzling last night, both charming and bold. Their "battle" had ended only when she slipped into sleep or possibly unconsciousness from exhaustion.
Moving gently, he kissed her forehead, then got out of bed and quietly exited the room.
As the door clicked shut, Bulma's eyes fluttered open. She smiled to herself and ran a hand across her warm forehead.
A sweet expression bloomed on her face. Then, catching sight of the scattered shreds of her now-ruined lingerie on the floor, her cheeks turned crimson again.
"…What a beast," she muttered, burying her face in the pillow.
