In the end, the sweet little walk came to a halt the moment they entered the school grounds. The peaceful atmosphere shattered as students filled the area, their eyes drawn to the unexpected trio. Lala, in true Lala fashion, clung to Haruno's arm without a care in the world, her pink hair gleaming like a beacon in the morning sun. Her beauty, foreign charm, and… tail—yes, tail—naturally drew every glance like moths to a flame.
Yui, on the other hand, immediately let go of Haruno's pinky, her face stiffening as she noticed the eyes on them. A serious girl through and through, she didn't want to be seen flirting so openly, especially not in front of a crowd. Haruno could practically feel the daggers of envy from nearby male students. Some were glaring as if he had stolen a national treasure. Others just looked confused, curious about how a guy ended up sandwiched between two eye-catching girls.
Haruno recalled a particular chapter from the manga where Lala boldly declared herself as Rito's bride in front of the entire class—only for his classmates to collectively lose their minds. The boys erupted in jealous fury. It was the kind of over-the-top chaos typical of Japanese romcoms: exaggerated reactions, classroom riots, and comedic misunderstandings.
Now, standing in his own classroom, Haruno couldn't help but draw parallels.
"Is this going to turn into that kind of scene…?" he muttered to himself, eyes flicking warily around the room. "Nah, I doubt it'll get that bad... probably."
But even as he said that, he could feel the stares boring into him like laser beams. The intensity of his male classmates' glares was downright murderous—jealousy radiating from them in waves. Some were glaring at him like he'd committed a serious crime against humanity, while others looked stunned, as if trying to compute how an ordinary guy like him was walking around with not one, but two gorgeous girls.
A drop of cold sweat rolled down Haruno's temple. Yeah… it might actually turn into that after all.
Lala finally released his arm and took her seat, humming a happy tune as if nothing was out of the ordinary. Haruno could already feel the pressure of a hundred questions building in the room.
Sure enough, a girl approached Lala with a bright smile and sparkling eyes. "Ne, ne, Lala~ What's your relationship with Aizawa-san? You two looked super close!"
"Eh? He's my fiance!" Lala answered cheerfully, without hesitation.
Haruno's soul visibly left his body as a dozen more heads suddenly turned to stare at him.
"Fiancé!? Really!?" one of the girls squealed, her voice rising with excitement. The moment Lala casually dropped the bombshell, the female classmates flocked around her like bees to honey. Gossip sensors fully activated.
Naturally, their chatter quickly became the focal point of the classroom. Lala, blissfully unaware of the chaos she was stirring, recounted the tale with sparkling eyes. She explained how Haruno had stood up to her father's subordinates—bravely blocking their attempt to drag her off to meet a potential husband. His defiance and resolve earned her father's respect, and more importantly, gave Haruno the "green light" to become her fiancé.
"I just… can't stop loving him!" Lala finished, pressing her hands to her cheeks with a dreamy expression.
Haruno, who had been listening in stunned silence, felt like his soul had briefly left his body. He never expected Lala to share that story in front of the entire class. And judging by the stares he was getting—especially from the girls—his stock had risen dramatically.
The boys, on the other hand, looked like they were moments away from launching a revolt. All except Rito, who seemed relatively uninterested in Lala and kept casting glances toward Haruna instead.
Thankfully, the classroom buzz died down when the teacher arrived, giving Haruno a brief window of peace.
Later, during lunch, the trio sat together on the rooftop. "Starting a new club?" Lala asked between bites of tempura, clearly intrigued.
"Yeah," Haruno nodded. "Even though the school doesn't require clubs, I thought it'd be fun—and useful. Especially since there is a chance of something happening around you."
"Eh, really!? Why?"
"Well, I heard you're a princess from a massive empire that spans galaxies," Haruno began, casually taking a sip of his drink. "So, there's a big chance some of your other fiancé candidates might not take kindly to you choosing me. They could try to cause problems—for me, or even for you. That's why I think having a proper clubroom in school would help. A sort of base of operations, so to speak."
"Hm… you're probably right," Lala replied, putting a finger to her chin in thought. "Some of them are pretty intense…"
"And you're a brilliant inventor, aren't you? Maybe we could use the clubroom for more than just hiding out. You could work on improving tech like that augmented clothing," Haruno added, subtly referencing the incident that caused his last nosebleed.
Lala's eyes lit up. "Ah! I understand! I'll make a new suit for you—something stronger, cooler, and maybe even with laser beams!"
Yui, still chewing thoughtfully, added in a soft voice, "What about calling it the Alien and Occult Research Club? It sounds silly, but with you two—and Ryouko—it might actually make sense."
"Yeah," Haruno chuckled. "With you girls backing the application, the principal's approval is basically guaranteed."
"Eh? What do you mean?" Yui blinked, a little puzzled.
"He's weak to cute girls like you," Haruno teased. "I mean, he let Lala into this school without any proper paperwork in, like, a day."
"Oh… that's true," Yui muttered, a little embarrassed. Hearing Haruno say something like that made her blush as usual—she still wasn't used to receiving praise from him so casually.
"Still, we need at least four people to make it official," Haruno noted. "I've already asked Ryouko, and she said to leave it to her." He added.
'But I was also thinking… Maybe I could use this as a way to get closer to Haruna.' He thought to himself.
He recalled the manga—Haruna was part of the tennis club. Maybe now was the time to finally take a proper look at her. If their eyes met, would she become one of the heroines too? Haruna was, after all, the original main heroine of To Love-Ru, just like Lala and Yui. Even though the sequel had pushed her to the sidelines to focus on Momo and Yami, she still held an important place in the story's heart. More importantly, she was the only girl Haruno knew for certain had romantic feelings for Rito before the story started. He couldn't help but wonder—if this "soulmate effect" was effective for her, would it work on her too?
"I wonder… Oh well. All I can do is try. If nothing happens… I guess I'll just be a little disappointed." Haruno sighed inwardly as that thought lingered.
"In the end, I don't really know many people in this class," he said aloud, turning toward Lala and Yui. "So if anything's going to happen, it's probably going to depend on you two."
Lala and Yui exchanged glances, then nodded in agreement.
"Okay! Leave it to us!" Lala said brightly.
Still, it wasn't going to be easy. The idea of joining something as strange-sounding as the "Alien and Occult Research Club" didn't exactly appeal to most of their female classmates. Their efforts hadn't gained much interest—until Lala turned her attention toward a certain group: Risa, Mio… and Haruna.
Just then, Haruno and Haruna locked eyes.
For some reason, over the past two days, something had always gotten in the way. Their gazes never quite met, like some invisible barrier had been in place. But now—at this moment—fate allowed it.
The second their eyes met, Haruno felt it.
A shift. A spark.
That familiar pull.
The soulmate effect had taken hold even for Haruna.
