Gilbert's face darkened. "Claire, don't push your luck."
It was already the middle of the night. The fact that he came in person was already giving her a huge amount of face.
"What luck am I pushing?" Claire scoffed. "What did you ever give me to begin with, and how much have I supposedly taken? We were married, and when we divorced, I left with nothing. I was a free maid for the Watson family for two years. What did I get in return? Nothing but your affair and abandonment. What else?"
Thinking of the hardships she endured raising the children alone, a red glint of fury flashed in Claire's eyes. Old wounds were torn open again, bleeding fresh pain from her heart.
She would never forget how cold and heartless the man she once loved deeply had been to her.
Thankfully, now, she no longer loved him, no longer treated him like her whole world.
Gilbert was silent for a moment, then suddenly pulled out a check from his pocket. "How much do you want?"
