"Mmh? Naruto, who's that old man?" asked Karin as she came down the stairs, sleepy, in her pajamas and rubbing one eye.
Naruto turned, looked at her with a smile, and replied casually:
"No one important. He was just leaving anyway."
"Oh, okay."
Yawning, and without giving it much thought, Karin disappeared into the kitchen, dragging her slippers, leaving Jiraiya completely ignored.
Several days had passed since the Chūnin Exams preliminaries ended, and Karin had grown used to living with Naruto and to her new home.
In fact, she was starting to feel at home.
Jiraiya observed her closely, frowning, surprised.
"Kushina and Minato had another daughter? I didn't know you had a sister, kid!"
Naruto let out an exasperated sigh.
"She's not my sister. She's Karin Uzumaki. Her mother was one of the few people who survived the fall of Uzushiogakure. She came from Kusagakure for the Chūnin Exams."
Jiraiya frowned even more upon hearing that. An Uzumaki ending up in a place like Kusagakure didn't sit well with him, but he decided not to say anything… for now.
"You know what? I've decided!" he suddenly exclaimed, changing the subject enthusiastically. "I'm going to train you personally! I'll teach you a few tricks! What do you say?"
Naruto didn't answer. He simply raised a leg and kicked him in the chest, sending him flying into the garden.
"Gah!" Jiraiya landed on his butt in the dirt, staring at the sky.
The door slammed shut.
"Eh…?"
Jiraiya blinked, still trying to process what had just happened.
"HOW CAN YOU TURN ME DOWN LIKE THAT?! THIS IS A DISGRACE, KID! YOU'RE JUST LIKE YOUR MOTHER!"
Behind the door, Naruto said nothing. He didn't need to. His silence said it all: he wasn't interested.
Jiraiya might be a great teacher, and even a good person, all things considered. A hopeless pervert, sure, but with a decent heart.
Even so, Naruto had had enough.
He was receiving direct lessons from Mito Uzumaki, who was teaching him Fūinjutsu at a level that even Jiraiya would find overwhelming.
The Second Hokage himself, Tobirama Senju, though with an unbearable attitude, was also helping with his training.
Naruto was already tired of hearing him repeat the same thing every time they talked:
"You must become the next Hokage."
At first, he took it as a compliment. Then as a joke. But now… now he just wanted to throw himself out the window every time Tobirama opened his mouth.
He also trained his body with Might Duy from time to time.
And with Kurama cooperating, he had more than enough control over the Kyūbi's Chakra.
Besides, he had already signed the Toad Contract.
And he had mastered Sage Mode, thanks to Minato having passed all his strength to him.
He didn't need Jiraiya.
Although, on second thought…
Naruto calmly opened the door again.
"Actually, I'd like you to do something for me…"
Jiraiya got up, covered in dirt, and dusted himself off roughly. He looked at him, annoyed.
"After kicking me, you think I'll do something for you?!"
Naruto looked at him with boredom.
"Hey, you owe me. You were supposed to take care of me after my parents died, but here we are, fourteen years later, and it's the first time we meet…"
Jiraiya swallowed hard. He scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, with a nervous smile.
"Well, you see…"
"You owe me years of child support!" Naruto exclaimed, pointing at him as if delivering a sentence.
"Okay, okay! Just tell me what you need!"
Naruto smiled, satisfied.
"Come in. I'll make you breakfast."
Jiraiya looked at him, surprised.
"Eh?"
Naruto opened the door fully and stepped aside.
"After all, you need to meet your new student."
"Student…?"
Jiraiya frowned as he walked in.
"Karin, I got you a Fūinjutsu teacher! You can call him Perverted Sage!" shouted Naruto toward the kitchen.
Jiraiya gritted his teeth. A vein popped out on his forehead.
"I TOLD YOU NOT TO CALL ME THAT, DAMN BRAT!"
Karin peeked her head from the kitchen with a glass of milk in her hand. She looked Jiraiya up and down.
"That old guy's going to be my teacher? Seriously? And why do you call him a pervert…?" She narrowed her eyes suspiciously.
"I'm not old! And I'm not that much of a pervert either!" Jiraiya grumbled, walking awkwardly behind Naruto.
"Sure, sure…" muttered Karin, sitting at the table.
Breakfast was already served: rice, salted fish, miso, eggs, and some toast.
Karin was already eating calmly.
Jiraiya sat across from her, observing her with interest.
"So… Karin, huh? What do you know about seals?"
Karin shrugged as she sipped her soup.
"The basics. I recognize some containment seals and have used medical seals. But I want to learn more, seriously. I'm really interested in Fūinjutsu."
"Not many dare to learn that. Why do you want to?"
Karin set down her cup and looked him straight in the eyes.
"Because I never want to be weak again. I also want to become a Master of Fūinjutsu, like my Uzumaki ancestors!"
Naruto, sitting beside her, smiled when he heard that.
Jiraiya noticed the gesture.
"All right, girl. If you're willing to learn, I'm willing to teach. Not many ninjas want to learn Fūinjutsu these days."
Karin looked at him suspiciously for a few seconds… then nodded.
"But if you try to peek on me in the shower, I'll stab a spoon in your eye."
"WHAT KIND OF STUDENT THREATENS HER MASTER LIKE THAT?!"
"Mhmp, an Uzumaki, of course."
Jiraiya froze for a moment… then burst into laughter.
"You really are a lot like Kushina, even more than Naruto. Looks like my new student's a wild one…"
He shook his head, amused.
Naruto had to hold Karin back to keep her from trying to hit him.
…
Minato watched as the sand boy, the son of the Kazekage, Gaara, ended the life of Dosu, one of Orochimaru's subordinates.
Just as Naruto had told him, Dosu would try to kill Gaara to secure a spot against Sasuke in the Chūnin Exams finals.
During the past week, Minato had been tagging all of Root's bases with his personal seal, just as his son asked him to.
But aside from that, Naruto had made another request.
Ignoring both Dosu's corpse and Gaara himself, Minato turned his attention to the Sunagakure Jōnin, Baki, and Kabuto, Orochimaru's right hand. The two were talking not far from where he remained hidden.
Minato looked a few meters beyond and found his real target: Hayate Gekkō.
"As I understand it, Konoha has already started investigating you, Kabuto. If you meet with me, the plan to destroy the village of Konoha will go to hell," said Baki.
Minato, who was listening to every word, frowned, just like Hayate.
According to what Naruto had told him, Kabuto originally would have visited Sasuke in the hospital to try and kidnap him. But his plan was thwarted by his student, Kakashi.
Since then, Kabuto had been declared a traitor and was being pursued by Konoha.
However, in this timeline, Sasuke never received the Cursed Seal of Heaven, so that kidnapping attempt never happened.
Even so, Kabuto had raised suspicions due to his repeated failed attempts during the exams, leading to an investigation being opened.
After the preliminary matches, Hayate had been tasked with monitoring the Sand ninjas. Only now did he realize that Kabuto was indeed a traitor, possibly allied with Orochimaru, as the Third Hokage already suspected.
But a plan to destroy the village? He never would have imagined something like that was brewing in the shadows.
Minato knew all these details only thanks to his son.
His goal was to save Hayate's life and prevent Baki from killing him.
Under a Transformation Technique, Minato appeared by his side and struck him on the neck, knocking him unconscious.
Just as Baki was about to attack Hayate, he was surprised to see that Hayate had completely vanished, as if he had never been there.
Kabuto inspected the area and frowned upon seeing a three-pronged kunai embedded in the ground.
He decided to report to Orochimaru immediately.
