Chapter 99
We'd barely made it thirty minutes into the forest before I realized that this quest was going to be a disaster, just as I had predicted to Finn.
And this wasn't on account of the cave since we hadn't even reached it yet. The forest itself clearly didn't want us there, and it was getting increasingly aggressive about showing it.
The trees closed in around us, branches snagging at our clothes every few miles. Gnarled roots rose up in our path, making Cappy and Torrent trip at least half a dozen times each. Moss thickened underfoot until it felt like we were walking across wet sponges and would be swallowed by the earth at any moment.
And then there was our party itself.
Every ten steps, Mernia stopped to either collect a mushroom, poke a glowing flower, or hum test notes into unsuspecting bushes like she was serenading the undergrowth.
"Ooooh, this one squeaks."
"I wonder if anyone has studied the capillary action on this."
