The cave entrance yawned before us like the mouth of something ancient and probably quietly annoyed at having its slumber disturbed. Faint glows of green, purple, and an uncomfortable amount of sickly orange lit the jagged walls, all coming from moss that looked less like plants and more like bioluminescent bruises.
With every step, I was starting to regret letting Finn convince me into this quest. I knew it wasn't as easy as it had seemed on paper.
Mernia was marching up front, cheerfully oblivious to the sense of impending doom that clung to the air like wet socks, while I couldn't stop thinking about how we were at risk of spontaneous combustion. "This cave system is so rich with acoustic fungus," she whispered with aggressive excitement. "I've never seen this level of tone-reactive bio-growth outside of academic fiction."
Bran walked beside her, looking uncharacteristically cheerful.
