After enjoying a delicious dinner at the cafeteria, Silas made his way to the school's training grounds for a light session to get accustomed to the facilities.
The equipment there was quite comprehensive some of the machines were even more advanced than those found at the Pewter Gym, offering better performance.
After just a short workout, Silas returned to his room with his three Pokémon.
Since he knew now that mornings could also be used for training, there was no need to rush. According to the school schedule, the first class didn't start until 9 a.m., which left plenty of time for morning exercises before heading to class.
Afternoon classes were even more relaxed than those in the morning, and since he didn't have to rush, he usually finished his courses by around 3 p.m. That left him time to head out into the wild and earn some extra cash on the side.
Silas calculated that even if he didn't take on missions over the next few days, he could still generate a bit of income. After all, constantly spending without earning anything in return would wear anyone down.
Though this afternoon's outing had more than doubled his net worth, it was still important to prepare for the future. Funding the training for a fourth Pokémon was still far from within reach.
Back in his room, Silas prepared individual dinners for each of his three Pokémon. Only after making sure they were fed did he finally sink into the couch and pull up the messages on his wristwatch—something he hadn't checked all afternoon.
The first thing he saw was a call from Professor Rowan, whom he had marked as an important contact. Upon seeing the message, Silas immediately dialed back.
"Ring~" After a few tones, the call connected.
"Hello, this is Rowan. May I ask who's calling?"
"Professor Rowan, it's me—Silas."
He quickly apologized, "I had my wristwatch on silent while I was out exploring this afternoon and didn't notice your call until just now. I'm truly sorry."
"Oh, Silas! No worries, no worries. Safety comes first when you're out in the field. You're back at school now, I assume?"
Professor Rowan paused his work.
"Yes, I've returned," Silas confirmed, then began answering the questions Rowan had left in the message. "I found that Cranidos fossil in a Rydon's cave on the outskirts of Mt. Moon.
That Rhydon is already in my possession, currently deposited at the Pewter Gym. If you need access, you can contact them directly—I've already informed the staff there.
As for the cave's exact location, I'll send you the coordinates via wristwatch, along with a map.
According to the Rhydon, the fossil was already there when it moved in. It never really noticed it—it was embedded in the rock wall the entire time.
I did a quick survey of the surrounding area, but there were no other fossil traces nearby."
Professor Rowan nodded slightly, then realized that Silas couldn't see his gestures during a voice call.
"Got it. This fossil discovery sheds light on a lot of things. Professor Oak and I will probably have to make a trip out there soon.
Good thing it was you who found it. If it had ended up in the hands of some ignorant trainer only interested in money, they'd probably sell it off to those rich collectors. That would've been a huge loss."
There was a tinge of dissatisfaction in his tone regarding some types of trainers.
Silas naturally responded with modest humility, saying it was just a matter of luck.
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Professor Rowan didn't press the matter any further. He simply gathered the details he needed and assured him that the reward owed to him would be transferred shortly. he mentioned he had more experiments to run and ended the call.
Silas pumped his fist in excitement—this was a huge win.
He hadn't expected that going back to Rhydon's cave would lead to such a discovery: a complete Cranidos fossil.
He had previously done some research and knew that this particular fossil had, until now, only been found in the faraway Sinnoh region. Its appearance now in Mt. Moon of the Kanto region was of major significance for various scientific studies.
If he were to sell the fossil to a wealthy collector, he could probably make a fortune overnight.
After all, including this one, only three complete Cranidos fossils were known to exist. Two were housed in research institutions in Sinnoh, and just one was privately owned.
His was the very first one discovered in Kanto, which gave it even greater historical and monetary value. For collectors, this was a rare treasure of inestimable worth.
However, Silas still chose to hand the fossil over to Professor Rowan.
Compared to a quick windfall, he felt that building a strong relationship with a regional professor was far more valuable. Didn't Professor Rowan just say that Professor Oak was also interested?
Besides, research institutions weren't stingy—they did pay for contributions, just not as much as private buyers. But if there were no rewards at all, why would any trainer willingly offer their findings for free?
Truthfully speaking, Professor Oak might be the richest collector of them all.
Silas quickly packaged the information he had just mentioned and sent it to Professor Rowan. Then, he opened the second message, which happened to be the transfer record and notes from the Glow Moss Research Institute, a facility under the Oak Research Lab.
Just that one piece of Light Clay, about half the size of a palm, had earned him a transfer of 3 million Pokédollars.
A satisfied smile appeared on his face. See, this is what real wealth looks like—semi-monopolistic research institutions like this are where the real money is. And not to mention their parent organizations above them.
This was already 10% higher than the market price he'd previously known, probably because they were conducting some kind of experiment that required large quantities of it, thus raising the purchasing price. This kind of thing happened quite often.
The third and fourth messages were just simple greetings from people he had met onboard the S.S. Anne. Silas replied casually and didn't pay them much attention.
He began calculating the profits from this latest outing.
There really wasn't much to calculate—mainly the complete Fossil and two Moon Stones, along with capturing a Rhydon. The rest of the gains didn't even compare to the value of those alone.
Silas couldn't help but feel a little inflated.
If he sold the Moon Stones, he wouldn't have to worry about funding for the next two or three months. However, he had other plans in mind. They weren't finalized yet, so there was no rush. The price of Evolution Stones wasn't going to drop anytime soon.
He wondered how much the Oak Research Lab would offer for the fossil. Whatever it was, it certainly wouldn't be a small amount.
He was simply lucky, bold due to his skill, and had a good idea of the wild Pokémon's strength—that's the only reason he could pull off a haul like this.
Normally, who would go and provoke a wild Pokémon of unknown strength? What if it turned out to be near-Elite or even Champion level? Even if the odds were low, nobody would be willing to bet their life on that.
And if it had been an average Trainer, their Pokémon might've capped out at Advance-tier at best no way they could defeat a Rhydon with quasi-Champion potential, especially one with such extensive battle experience.
Let alone the two Nidokings and the Nidoqueen, and the whole group of underlings they commanded.
The real reason it seemed easy was thanks to his Blaziken and Boldore being top-tier Pokémon. For them, dealing with ordinary wild Pokémon was a breeze.
Outside the window, night had fallen. The three Pokémon were already resting peacefully in their individual rest chambers, while Silas pulled out his materials to start studying.
In the neighboring rooms, the lights in the instructors' quarters were still on.
