The morning sunlight spilled across the campus of the Pokémon Research Academy, casting a serene glow over the quiet surroundings.
However, in the training grounds, quite a few trainers and Pokémon had already begun their daily routines.
Inside one of the rooms of the gravity chamber, a Blaziken was lying back on a piece of equipment. Weights were strapped to its lower legs, and it also held a specialized barbell. With a burst of strength, it strained to lift its legs upward.
"Good, keep going, lift higher," Silas encouraged from the side as he observed Blaziken's movements.
Flames occasionally erupted from Blaziken's fists—it was already so exhausted that it couldn't control its energy from leaking out anymore.
"Blazaaa!"
It let out a cry, completing its final rep while panting heavily.
Silas unfastened the weights from its legs, gave it a pat on the body, and then took out a few Sitrus Berries.
"You did well. Next is reflex training. Head over to the other field I need to check on Pidgeot."
He instructed Blaziken. The night before, he had already brought three of his Pokémon to scout the area and had gone over the basic training routines with them. There shouldn't be any problems.
"Blaaz."
Blaziken stood up, munching on the Sitrus Berries as it nodded in acknowledgment.
"Oh right, that field doesn't have a gravity field, so you'll need to wear this."
Just before leaving, Silas tossed over a weighted vest. It was a new one they had replaced during their stay at Cape White. The old one could no longer keep up with Blaziken's increasing strength.
Blaziken stared at Silas's retreating back, then glanced at the black weighted vest on the bench and sighed helplessly.
Its Trainer's training schedule really was monstrous. But truth be told, every drop of sweat had paid off its rate of improvement had been astonishing.
Blaziken wasn't unfamiliar with other Pokémon either. During breaks, it had chatted with several others. None of their Trainers were as formidable as Silas.
From the moment it was born to the time it evolved, it had taken Blaziken barely five months to reach its current level of strength. The other Pokémon had taken years to reach theirs.
The Pokémon it had spoken to all agreed that Silas was the best Trainer around aside from their own, of course.
After finishing the three Sitrus Berries, Blaziken grabbed the remaining berries and the weighted vest, then walked out of the gravity chamber.
"Bla-sha-fuuu~"
Wearing the weighted vest, Blaziken strode into the reflex training field, casually greeting the Pokémon already present.
"Gooooolduck~" "Machaaamp~"
A blue duck-like Pokémon with a red gem on its forehead raised a claw in a stylish salute. Blaziken recognized it—this was a Water-type, Golduck. Silas had mentioned it before.
The other responder was a humanoid Pokémon with four muscular arms—Machamp.
Despite its bulky frame and intimidating appearance, Machamp had a surprisingly gentle demeanor. It walked over to Blaziken, asking where its Trainer was and if it needed any help.
Blaziken replied that it knew how the equipment worked. Machamp nodded and walked over to a resting area to sit down.
Still, it decided to stay and watch for a bit, just in case the new face got confused during the drills.
Blaziken entered the field proper, where two more Pokémon hadn't yet responded to its greeting.
One of them was a fox-like quadrupedal Pokémon, covered in pale yellow fur with crimson eyes and nine flowing tails. It glanced at Blaziken briefly, saying nothing, maintaining an aura of icy elegance.
Its nine tails swished rapidly, maintaining balance while simultaneously batting away all the fast-approaching bouncing balls with graceful precision.
Blaziken couldn't help but admire it what a noble and elegant Pokémon. And powerful, too.
Then, its gaze turned to the last Pokémon present a blue-and-black, canine-like creature. That one gave a subtle nod before returning to its training, dodging and countering in a dazzling display of movement using both its arms and legs.
Blaziken couldn't recognize the species, but its combat technique was top-notch even better than that of its own mentor, Scizor. And there was a strange sense of familiarity about it that Blaziken couldn't quite place.
Blaziken didn't dwell on that sense of familiarity. It let out a cry to pump itself up, then began its own training routine.
Within the training area, aside from the occasional Pokémon cries, the only other sound was the sharp whistling of the rebound balls flying swiftly through the air.
Meanwhile, Silas had arrived at the wind tunnel room where his Pidgeot was training. The structure of the wind tunnel was nearly identical to the one at Pewter Gym, with the only difference being that this one could reach stronger wind speeds.
He watched as Pidgeot advanced headlong against the roaring winds, sometimes slicing through the air with a sweeping flap of its wings, other times adjusting its body posture to increase its speed even further.
Silas gave a slight nod. Pidgeot was without a doubt his current ace Pokémon. Even though it was a close match between Blaziken and Pidgeot roughly a 60-40 split—Pidgeot still held a slight edge.
That advantage came mainly because Blaziken had higher potential by about two tiers compared to Pidgeot. Otherwise, Blaziken's win rate would be even lower.
After all, Pidgeot not only had the edge in level but also in age and experience.
Although its growth had been somewhat slow due to financial constraints in the past, that very process had honed its skill control and battle timing to a razor-sharp edge.
Scizor had indeed taught Blaziken many combat techniques, but for it to truly master them, it still needed more battles and further tempering.
After a brief check to confirm that Pidgeot was in good condition, Silas quietly left the room he still needed to check on Boldore.
Time was tight.
This was also why the Pokémon League had set the rule that Trainers could only carry up to six Pokémon at a time. Any more than that, and it would be difficult to manage them all.
Of course, if one applied for special permission, more Pokémon could be carried depending on the situation but that was something only exceptional individuals could hope for.
Arriving at Boldore's specially-designed magma-like habitat, Silas began communicating with it about how to further master the power of Sand Force.

Location: Pokémon Research Academy, Room 201
Silas was currently reviewing the homework he had assigned the day before.
"The training plans submitted by everyone were quite good. Within the limits of your current knowledge, you've all demonstrated your individual ways of thinking.
Let's go through them one by one. Yuto proposed a plan that emphasizes the use of Stun Spore, one of the three powder moves. The materials listed were Paralyze Herb and Goldenleaf Powder. The reaction between the two is based on...
Next, Ghostwing Eagle suggested a mixed powder combining Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. The materials listed were Paralyze Herb and Dream Berry. Conceptually, this is certainly feasible, but Ghostwing Eagle missed...
As for Eri Akimoto's proposal, she hoped to..."
Silas analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of each student's breeding plan. As expected from kids, there were quite a few gaps in their logic and considerations.
Lately, Silas had also been contemplating how to better train Grass-type Pokémon, which was why he chose this topic as the focus of his lecture. The academy didn't dictate what had to be taught, so he had the freedom to teach as he pleased.
