"I'm not entirely sure yet," Silas replied, not paying attention to Brock, who had taken the Moon Stones. He walked to the side and picked up a glass of water to drink.
It wasn't like Brock was going to steal from him, anyway.
"Not sure?" Brock looked at him strangely. "Then why'd you give them to me?"
"Just leaving them with you for now," Silas said casually as he sat down.
A few black lines metaphorically appeared above Brock's head. "I'm not your warehouse. Why are you always dumping your stuff on me?"
Despite saying that, he walked over to his private storage, opened it, and tossed the two Moon Stones inside.
Silas glanced over and noticed that, besides his own Leaf Stone, the storage was filled with all sorts of rare items.
Brock quickly shut the door of the small storage with a wary look. "Don't get any ideas about my stuff!"
Silas shook his head and didn't respond. He finished his glass of water in one gulp. "Alright, I'm heading out. The Pokémon are on the table. As for the Rhydon, I already talked to you about it earlier. If there's no issue, I'll leave it to you from here."
Before Brock could react, Silas had already stepped out the door.
Brock let out a helpless sigh as he picked up the three Poké Balls and headed toward the examination room, muttering, "Why do I always feel like a babysitter?"
If Silas had heard that, he definitely would've roasted him on the spot. Considering his portrayal in the anime, he really did seem like Ash's babysitter.
On the way back to the Pokémon Research School, Silas flew through the air.
Professor Rowan's Laboratory
A researcher in a white lab coat knocked on the office door. "Professor Rowan, your delivery just arrived."
"Thanks, Hikaru. Just leave it on the table," Professor Rowan responded without looking up, his eyes glued to the data on the computer screen.
The researcher named Hikaru glanced helplessly at the chaotic mess on the desk. Besides instant noodle cups and lollipop sticks, it was filled with various candy wrappers. The disorder made it hard to find a clean spot.
He sighed and cleared a small area before placing the package down. Then he left the room.
As for actually cleaning the whole desk—forget it. His own office and his colleagues' weren't any better. When you're deep in research, who has time to clean?
Besides, there were people assigned to clean up regularly. No need to trouble himself with that.
Professor Rowan didn't even notice the researcher leaving and continued to focus on his work.
Hiss—
The door opened.
"Hey, did the data come out yet?"
Rowan didn't respond.
The person who entered walked in naturally, grabbed a cup of instant noodles from the side, and made two portions. He hadn't had dinner yet, so it was a good time to sneak in a quick meal.
After a while, once he had already started eating, Rowan finally finished what he was doing and turned around.
He blinked in surprise. "Oak? When did you get here?"
"Just now," Professor Oak answered with a mouthful of noodles. "I made you a bowl, too. Help yourself."
"Thanks." Rowan sat down and started eating as well. "The data's been computed, but to refine it further, I'll need help from the other region professors. I talked with Professor Elm about it last time..."
"What do you think about Bill's project?" Oak asked while chewing. "From a feasibility standpoint, it's quite promising. It also helps in promoting widespread accessibility of Pokémon. The only real issues are..."
As they ate their noodles, the two professors continued to chat non-stop.
Professor Oak set down his bowl and glanced at the package nearby. Casually, he asked:
"Who sent that over?"
"Huh?" Professor Rowan looked up and spotted the package as well. He blinked in surprise.
"Oh, that was just dropped off by Hikaru. I'm not sure who sent it either. Let me check."
He picked up the package and read the sender's name—Silas Alaric.
Professor Rowan chuckled,"Ah, it's from that Silas I told you about—the one who was filling in at the academy."
He opened his wrist device and, as expected, saw that he had ignored several unread messages from Silas.
Opening the package, he found a lump of greenish-blue clay and a large rock that faintly bore the skeletal imprint of a dragon-like creature.
"Light Clay, huh? Perfect timing. The Glow Mass Research Institute just reported a shortage of Light Clay—I completely forgot."
Professor Oak slapped his forehead as the memory hit him. He immediately sent a message to the League's procurement division, instructing them to increase their acquisition efforts.
"Yeah, but the key here is this fossil." Professor Rowan stared at the data on his device.
"This little guy found it in Mt. Moon, but it's actually a Cranidos fossil. That's a major discovery."
"Cranidos? Isn't that species' fossil only ever found in Sinnoh?" Professor Oak's eyes widened.
"Exactly. Until now, the only three complete Cranidos fossils were unearthed in the Sinnoh region. This is the first complete Cranidos fossil discovered in Kanto."
"This could significantly enhance our hypotheses about ancient Pokémon ecosystems and geological history. This is incredible!"
Both professors were clearly excited. Every new discovery like this was a thrill to them.
"That kid still hasn't replied to me. He's probably busy. I'll ask him for the details later tonight."
Professor Rowan tried to contact Silas via his wrist device, but it showed the recipient was currently occupied. He turned to Oak and said,
"By the way, you've been helping me with research for decades now, right?"
Professor Oak nodded and suddenly felt nostalgic.
"Today's younger generation is really something, huh? Way more energetic than we were back in our day."
Rowan snorted, half laughing.
"We're only in our early fifties, not ancient fossils."
"What I mean is—don't you want to return to Sinnoh and continue your research there? The Kanto League can't fully support your projects. Only by going back to Sinnoh can you really get the resources you need." Oak looked earnestly at his close friend.
Rowan's talent was on par with his own. The only thing holding him back was circumstance.
"We'll see, we'll see..." Rowan, as always, couldn't make up his mind.
Meanwhile, Silas was completely unaware of what had unfolded at Professor Oak's lab after they received his package. At the moment, he was lying flat on the back of his Pidgeot, flying toward the academy dorms.
There was no helping it he didn't dare stand up. To this day, he still didn't understand how Lance managed to stand so easily on the back of a Dragonite while flying everywhere. Just lying down left his legs wobbly every time he got off.
As for his wrist device, he had set it to silent mode when entering a cave earlier that afternoon. After all, in the wild, a sudden sound could ruin everything.
He hadn't turned it back since, and naturally didn't notice Professor Rowan's call.
Before long, thanks to Pidgeot's speed, Silas arrived at the dorms of the academy from Pewter City.
As he passed through the academy gates, a few patrolling Flying-type Pokémon took notice of him. Once they confirmed his identity, they didn't stop him.
Landing on solid ground, Silas felt incredibly relieved—there was nothing better than the feeling of having your feet on the ground again. After adjusting his posture a bit, he didn't even head inside. He made a beeline for the school cafeteria.
He was starving—and there was still training to do tonight.
