Chapter 60 - Chapter 60: Champion's Reward

He let out a deep breath. This feeling of being led by the enemy was far too different from his usual style it was seriously frustrating.

"No wonder he's the rival I acknowledge." With a solemn expression, Reggie threw out his last Poké Ball.

"Go, Staraptor!"

The moment it came out, Staraptor was struck by Stealth Rock, though the damage was minimal.

Reggie, who was full of fighting spirit just moments ago, suddenly felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over him. This was ridiculous just how many traps had that Roggenrola set up?

Silas tilted his head and glanced at his Combusken. Aside from the damage taken from using moves, it didn't seem to be hurt at all.

Then he might as well let it continue fighting.

Although Flying-types were indeed a bit tricky for Combusken to deal with.

"Flamethrower!"

The usual way of saying hello.

Silas was really starting to enjoy these moments when he didn't have to think about what move to use.

"Aerial Ace!"

Reggie commanded his Staraptor to charge at Combusken.

There was no other way Staraptor was actually stronger at close range, unlike Pidgeot, which had many mid- to long-range moves it could use.

Staraptor, glowing with a white light, executed a precise flight maneuver, skillfully dodging Combusken's flames as it advanced through the air.

As it drew closer, the Stealth Rocks were also destroyed one by one by the energy trailing from Staraptor's wings.

The energy trail formed by Aerial Ace not only carried a fierce aura but, in a way, also helped protect the Pokémon from minor damage caused by weaker attacks.

"Take it head-on." Silas's expression grew serious. "Use Focus Punch!"

Reggie's pupils contracted.

Staraptor slammed into Combusken, making it let out a cry of pain.

But the warrior instinct in Combusken kicked in. It gritted its teeth, planted its feet firmly on the ground, and resisted being knocked back.

Then it drove a powerful Focus punch into Staraptor's back while it was still flying low from the impact.

"Kreehh~!"

Staraptor was slammed hard into the ground and couldn't move.

"Rush in—Thunder Punch!"

Right now, Silas was immensely grateful he had taught Combusken Thunder Punch. It was incredibly useful against Flying- and Water-type Pokémon.

"Close Combat!"

"Kreehh~!"

Reggie and Staraptor launched a fierce counterattack, catching Silas off guard.

They didn't choose to fly away and dodge Combusken's Thunder Punch. Instead, they opted for a direct Close Combat, sacrificing their defenses and rushing forward to strike.

Staraptor, whose defenses were lowered, screamed in pain under the Thunder Punch.

But Combusken wasn't in much better shape either Close Combat was far stronger than Thunder Punch, and the damage it took wasn't any less than what Staraptor had suffered from the Electric-type attack.

The two Pokémon clashed violently, white light from the Fighting-type and yellow light from the Electric-type moves mixing with their brown and red feathers and fur into a chaotic blur.

With a loud crash, Staraptor, breathing heavily and its feathers ruffled, took flight again.

Combusken flipped backward several times to widen the distance, its body also covered in wounds.

Silas narrowed his eyes. "Heat Wave!"

"Spread out with Double Team!" Reggie responded calmly.

Combusken gathered its strength and unleashed Heat Wave into the air.

Staraptor held its breath and split into over a dozen shadow clones, scattering in all directions.

Heat Wave chased after them, breaking each clone one by one.

After the exchange, neither side had gained the upper hand.

For a while, the battlefield fell into a stalemate.

Staraptor hovered midair, looking down at the Combusken below. Combusken stood its ground, unmoving, ready for anything.

In the end, it was Silas who broke the silence. "Focus Energy."

If you're not moving, I'm not moving. Worst case, I'll just boost my stats.

Staraptor didn't have many status moves, maybe just a Work Up, but Combusken wasn't lacking either.

"Quick Attack, then Brave Bird!"

This was exactly the moment Reggie had been waiting for.

Stat-boosting moves took time to charge and couldn't be interrupted mid-use.

"Dodge it."

Hearing the opponent's command, Reggie stared intently at Combusken's movements.

He knew the opposing Combusken had the hidden ability Speed Boost, and he wasn't entirely sure if his Staraptor could land a hit in time.

Staraptor mustered all its strength and lunged straight at the motionless Combusken, who was in the middle of using Focus Energy.

Combusken, however, calmly finished its move, then instantly leapt backward into the air.

BOOM!

That sound wasn't from Combusken being hit it was from Staraptor crashing into the ground with a thunderous impact.

"Bounce!"

Though the area was now clouded in smoke and dust, Silas was confident that Combusken could pinpoint Staraptor's position.

Combusken immediately struck at the spot it remembered as the crash site.

"Final Gambit!" A flash of ferocity passed through Reggie's eyes as he gave the order.

Silas frowned slightly. Was that really necessary...?

Combusken landed its hit on Staraptor cleanly. Staraptor, now nearly out of stamina, barely managed to counter with Final Gambit, dragging Combusken down to its last sliver of strength as well.

Both Pokémon collapsed on the ground, unable to move, their eyes locked onto each other in a fierce stare.

Silas shook his head and withdrew Combusken.

"Go, Pidgeot."

Pidgeot soared high into the air, gazing coldly at the fallen Staraptor.

"Tailwind."

With the final command, a fierce wind swept across the field, summoned by Pidgeot.

Staraptor let out a faint cry before finally losing the ability to battle.

The referee raised the flag instantly.

"Staraptor is unable to battle. Pidgeot wins!

All of Reggie's Pokémon have lost the ability to battle. The winner of this match is Silas Alaric from Pewter Gym!"

"That was a great match. I hope we get to battle again in the Unrestricted Division of the Indigo League." Reggie walked down from the stage, shook hands with Silas with a forced smile, then turned and left to get his Pokémon treated.

Silas watched Reggie walk away, saying nothing. He simply thought that, aside from occasionally acting like an idiot and having behavior a little too similar to his younger brother Paul, Reggie was a worthy opponent.

He asked one of the staff members beside him to help hand over his Pokémon to Nurse Joy for treatment. Then, following the host's enthusiastic announcement, Silas stepped up onto the winner's podium.

"And now it's time for our Champion Award Ceremony!

This tournament's prizes are sponsored by the Eevee Brothers of Stone Town one Evolution Stone of your choice, and a Charcoal with 10% effect!"

Even though Silas had already known about the generous rewards, he couldn't help feeling excited when the host's spirited voice rang out.

The crowd, who had just been cheering for Silas's victory, had started to quiet down. But once they heard the announcement of the prizes, even these wealthy spectators couldn't hide their envy and began to buzz with chatter.

Those in the know were already explaining the value to others. A typical sponsored prize would be just a single Evolution Stone.

After all, the Eevee Brothers from Stone Town were major Evolution Stone dealers. It was no big deal for them.

As for the 10% Charcoal bonus this time, it was apparently the result of a fortunate coincidence in timing.
