The break time passed in the blink of an eye.
As the announcer's voice rang out, Silas and Reggie were already standing at their command platforms.
The referee raised the flag.
"Up next is a 3v3 showdown between Silas and Reggie. Each side may switch Pokémon once during the match.
The trainer whose three Pokémon are all defeated first will be declared the loser. Now then battle, begin!
Both trainers, please send out your Pokémon!"
"Go, Roggenrola!"
"Go, Gulpin!"
A Pokémon that looked like a lump of rock and a round, green, droplet-shaped Pokémon appeared on the battlefield.
"Mud-Slap!"
"Sludge Bomb!"
The two trainers gave commands almost at the same time.
As the two Pokémon unleashed their moves, the green Sludge Bomb and the brown mudball collided midair.
With a sizzling sound, the acid of the Sludge Bomb completely melted through the Mud-Slap.
Not only that, but the acid from Gulpin's Sludge Bomb still had enough force to keep flying toward Roggenrola.
Silas watched calmly.
There was no helping it Roggenrola was still relatively low-leveled compared to its opponent. It had only hatched recently.
But due to the type advantage, the remnants of the Sludge Bomb couldn't actually reach Roggenrola after melting through the mud.
Sure enough, the green acid blobs drifted forward a little more before dropping harmlessly to the ground.
Splat. Sizzle—
The acid splashed, corroding the ground into patches.
"Gravity. Stealth Rock."
Silas used the most familiar combo once more.
Roggenrola quickly set up the field.
Neither of the two Pokémon were adept at close-range combat, so this match was destined to be a long, strategic battle.
Reggie was trying to avoid letting Roggenrola get close enough to use its Ground-type moves. If they hit, the damage would be massive and unavoidable.
Silas's setup was a move to stabilize the match.
"Toxic Gas."
Reggie remained unfazed. He hadn't planned to go close from the beginning.
He commanded Gulpin to release a cloud of toxic gas that slowly drifted toward Roggenrola.
"Sand Tomb."
Silas continued to reshape the field to his advantage.
The flying speed of the Toxic Gas was painfully slow.
By the time Roggenrola had used Sand Tomb twice, the Toxic Gas had only just entered the area affected by Gravity.
At this point, the battlefield appeared unchanged to the eye, aside from the hazy cloud of Toxic Gas.
But in reality, Gravity, Stealth Rock, and Sand Tomb were already in effect—just not visible to the naked eye.
Only when an opponent stepped into the traps would their effects be revealed.
Reggie, watching Silas calmly set up the field without reacting to the gas, was a bit confused.
Still, he wasn't about to underestimate Silas. "Sludge."
As long as Roggenrola got poisoned, dragging things out would tilt the field in his favor.
Gulpin hurled globs of deep purple sludge, brimming with venom.
"Iron Defense. Then, Rest."
As the toxic gas engulfed Roggenrola, and the poisonous sludge approached through the air, Silas finally gave his next command.
After finishing the third Sand Tomb setup, Roggenrola's body began to slow under the effects of the gas.
Then, a flash of light shimmered across its rocky form as it used Iron Defense to boost its durability before instantly falling asleep.
Reggie's expression darkened.
The move Rest didn't just heal a large amount of HP it also cured all status conditions.
With the added defense boost from Iron Defense, his Toxic Gas and Sludge Bomb had practically done nothing at most, they shaved off an imperceptible sliver of stamina.
He hadn't expected Roggenrola to know Rest. After all, what kind of respectable Rock-type Pokémon used a move like that?
But then again, you couldn't use Rest repeatedly without consequence spamming it could be deemed passive battling and result in disqualification.
"Yawn."
Since you like sleeping so much, I'll help you sleep even more.
Reggie had Gulpin let out a big yawn, intensifying Roggenrola's drowsiness even further.
Close combat was out of the question now.
Reggie had no idea where the traps had been set. Charging in blindly would just waste energy.
"Encore."
Reggie's eyes gleamed. He was ready to go all-in on this annoying strategy.
Encore would force the target to repeat its last used move meaning Roggenrola would keep using Rest.
Doing the math, Roggenrola would now remain asleep for at least five minutes. The referee would likely declare it unable to battle soon.
Silas quietly observed Reggie's tactics.
He didn't speak or react until after Reggie had finished all his commands.
Gulpin was lazily spitting out bits of sludge as Silas finally opened his mouth.
"Snore."
Roggenrola let out a thunderous roar that echoed through the stadium.
Many of the spectators instinctively winced.
The referee calmly pulled out special earplugs and inserted them.
Gulpin was hit hard its entire body swaying and wobbling, clearly dazed.
"Rest and Snore combo? You're using Roggenrolae, not Snorlax. What kind of battle plan is this?"
Reggie couldn't help but complain internally. He had wanted to mess with Silas, but now the tables had turned.
Now it was his turn to get a headache.
Thanks to his own actions earlier, Geodude wouldn't be waking up anytime soon.
It would continuously recover health, remain immune to status conditions, and dish out damage with Snore making it impossible to be considered passive battling.
At this rate,Gulpin would be knocked out sooner or later.
Even Reggie, wearing earplugs, felt woozy from the volume Gulpin was in even worse shape.
Reggie's face twisted in discomfort. He was clearly in trouble.
His expression kept changing, clearly uncomfortable.
"Shadow Ball."
In the end, he chose not to switch Pokémon, commanding his Gulpin to launch repeated long-range Shadow Ball attacks at Roggenrola.
Now he was the one praying for Roggenrola to wake up quickly. If not, his Gulpin would just keep getting drained while Roggenrola healed and dished out damage.
Three minutes later, staring at his Gulpin lying fainted on the ground while Roggenrola, though scarred, still looked energetic, Reggie's face had turned dark.
If only he hadn't foolishly extended Roggenrola's sleep, the opponent wouldn't have won so easily.
The surrounding audience also sighed in relief the match was finally over.
This battle had been painfully dull: one side sleeping and snoring, the other spamming Shadow Ball. It was visually boring and aurally torturous.
Reggie recalled his Gulpin. "Useless. Your attack power is pathetic."
He cursed softly before throwing out another Poké Ball.
"Go, Skorupi!"
Of course, he wasn't seriously going to abandon the Gulpin. After all, its potential had tested at near-Elite level it was too valuable to waste.
If it had been a wild Pokémon that useless, then sure, it could be tossed aside.
"Korupi~"
Skorupi emerged from the ball with a loud cry, sensing its Trainer's displeasure.
It also took damage from the Stealth Rock laid down earlier by Roggenrola, which contributed to its outcry.
"Fell Stinger."
Though angry, Reggie remained calm. After assessing Roggenrolas condition, he commanded Drapion to use the move.
Fell Stinger would boost Drapion's Attack sharply if it brought the target to near-fainting.
"Smack Down to block it."
Silas responded by having Roggenrola hurl rocks to intercept the incoming attack.
Chunks of rock flew toward the fine stingers in midair, their size difference becoming obvious.
Even with type advantage, the stones were broken one after another. Fell Stinger managed to pierce through and strike Roggenrola.
Thankfully, Roggenrola's stamina was still in good shape, and with the defense boost from Iron Defense, the attack didn't knock it out.
"Pin Missile!"
Skorupi quickly followed up by launching a barrage of sharp needles through the air at Roggenrola.Silas had Roggenrola try to block again.
But there were just too many needles. Despite the effort, Roggenrola was ultimately struck by several and lost its ability to battle.
"Go,Combusken!"
Silas recalled Roggenrola he had no other choice. He'd hoped Roggenrola could at least chip away a bit more, but the strength gap was too large. Still, it had done its job.
"Flamethrower." "Fire Blast." "Heat Wave."
Silas commanded his Combusken to unleash continuous fire attacks at Skorupi from a distance.
From every angle, it was clear that Skorupi had no chance of winning a direct confrontation with Combusken.
If it tried to get close, it had to get past the Stealth Rock and potentially the unknown Sand Tomb traps.
In short, the grounded Skorupi was completely pinned in place.
Silas hadn't expected Reggie to be this "polite" in the first match, letting Roggenrola set everything up uninterrupted.
Reggie, meanwhile, had a dark expression as he instructed Skorupi to endure and trade blows with Combusken. He knew full well this meant Silas was dictating the pace of the match, and his own victory was slipping away.
He gritted his teeth.
"Evade and charge in with Agility—Cross Poison!"
Unfortunately, as soon as Skorupi reached the middle of the field, its four short legs got trapped in Sand Tomb and it couldn't move.
"Flamethrower combo!"
Silas, of course, wouldn't let this opportunity pass, commanding Combusken to bombard Skorupi with continuous attacks.
To prevent Skorupi from breaking free while other moves were charging, he opted for the quick and efficient Flamethrower.
After all, the Sand Tomb's duration was almost up.
"Korupi~" Skorupi screamed in agony as flames engulfed it.
How could a bug-type Pokémon possibly withstand the burning fire?
Not to mention,Skorupi had been repeatedly hit during the earlier ranged exchanges. The type disadvantage meant it had no way of neutralizing Combusken's attacks, and its short legs couldn't escape the fire's range.
So while Reggie was still hoping Skorupi could break free, Combusken's successive Flamethrowers struck home.
After a few more cries, Skorupi fell silent.
Silas ordered Combusken to stop and remained alert, ready for the next move.
As the flames faded, the ground revealed a battered Skorupi, covered in burn marks and traces of sand, completely unconscious.
"Skorupi is unable to battle. Combusken wins!"
The referee immediately raised his flag and declared the result.
Reggie clenched his fists and recalled Skorupi silently.
