Chapter 61 - Chapter 61: Post-Match Rest

All the official Gyms in the Kanto region had been holding this tournament aboard the S.S. Anne for years now.

But this year was different it was the most unique situation they'd ever encountered.

For the first time, every single Gym's heir happened to fall into an awkward age gap.

The older ones were over 20 years old, and the younger ones had just turned 16.

Because of this, many feared the matches wouldn't be very entertaining, as most of the participants weren't particularly strong.

Although strength and age were somewhat connected, the public didn't really care about the reasons.

To prevent people from thinking Kanto's overall strength was in decline, the Eevee Brothers decided to add a special reward—one of the evolution stones as a prize.

After all, financial strength was a form of strength too. Being able to offer valuable items could silence some critics.

Even if the reasoning was a bit far-fetched, it didn't really matter to Silas.

At least, for him, winning the Champion's reward was more than worth it.

He had already decided to choose a Leaf Stone, something he knew he needed. After disembarking, he was told he could pick it up at the Vermilion City Pokémon Center.

Holding a piece of Charcoal in his hand and carrying a certificate, Silas stepped down from the podium.

His expression was a little strange just a certificate? Literally just a piece of paper? No trophy, not even a protective frame or cover?

At the healing station, he approached Nurse Joy and retrieved three Poké Balls from the tray Chansey handed over.

"Thank you for your help, Nurse Joy," he said politely.

"This is my job no need to thank me," Nurse Joy replied with a smile before turning and leaving with Chansey.

For her, being invited to serve as part of the post-match medical team was essentially a vacation. She had fought hard for the opportunity.

Without hesitation, Silas picked the Luxury Ball containing Combusken and released it.

He handed the piece of Charcoal to Combusken and instructed, "Absorb this."

"Combus!"

Combusken nodded. It had a good idea of what the item was—something that would enhance the power of its Fire-type moves.

Carefully, it took the Charcoal from Silas.

Silas kept his eyes on its movements. Truth be told, this was his first time seeing a Pokémon actually use a held item. He had no idea what the process would look like.

The piece of Charcoal rested quietly in Combusken's claw.

As Combusken channeled its energy into the item, the Charcoal began to slowly sink into its body.

Silas made a face like someone who had just seen something completely nonsensical.

Wait, that's it?

No dramatic flash of white light? No surge of energy bursting through the air? No thunderous wind or divine aura as if a god had descended from the heavens?

He sighed. Clearly, he'd been overthinking it.

After all, it was just a held item. It wasn't like a Plate or something legendary. No need to expect anything so over-the-top.

He asked Combusken how it felt. Combusken replied that the little thing had entered its body instantly, but it didn't really feel anything unusual.

Silas immediately activated Zero to scan Combusken's status.

Satisfied, he nodded.Zero never let him down.

According to the scan report, Combusken's internal energy had indeed increased. Its flame temperature had also risen significantly.

Not only that according to Zero's simulations, if the item's effect continued to deepen, there might be additional benefits for Combusken down the line.

However, due to limited data,Zero couldn't yet determine exactly what those effects would be.

Silas shelved the thought for now. He let Combusken feel it out on its own, then returned to his room to get changed.

This time, Brock had specially prepared a formal suit for him meant for the evening banquet. He even gave Silas a crash course on etiquette.

After all, they were representing their respective Gyms. A polished image was important.

Silas, having lived alone for over a decade in this life, and having never dated in his previous life either, certainly wasn't the type to fawn over anyone.

Most of his clothes were either for outdoor exploration or quick-dry sportswear. He didn't own a single piece of formal wear.

He couldn't just show up to a banquet in casual clothes. That would be disrespectful to the other attendees.

After getting dressed, he recalled the three Pokémon who had finished dinner, minimized their Poké Balls, and clipped them to his belt.

Then he headed up to the sixth floor where the banquet was being held.

By the time he arrived, quite a few participants were already inside, chatting and mingling.

At the sound of the bell that chimed when he pushed the door open, many people instinctively turned toward the entrance.

What they saw was a dashing young man. His build perfectly complemented the royal blue suit he wore, and the tailcoat design gave him an especially refined and elegant appearance.

Silas nodded and smiled, greeting everyone who looked at him. The others returned the gesture politely.

A few of the female trainers, who were few in number, instinctively sat up straight like refined young ladies and greeted Silas demurely.

He scanned the room briefly, his eyes lighting up when they landed on someone, and he headed straight in that direction.

Seeing where he was headed, some people temporarily gave up on trying to strike up a conversation with him.

"Good evening, Celeb," Silas greeted casually.

"Well, if it isn't our champion,"Celeb replied, his tone dripping with sarcasm.

Silas chuckled and picked up a drink from a nearby table, taking a sip before replying, "You didn't seem this energetic earlier, huh?"

Celeb rolled his eyes but didn't argue. Instead, he changed the topic. "What brings you over here?"

Leaning lazily on the sofa, Silas responded in a bored tone, "I don't really know many people here. You're pretty much the only one I've actually had a good conversation with since boarding this ship."

It was true. Silas's scheduled morning observations hadn't been for nothing. He'd used that time to get to know a few people, and Celeb was one of them. Surprisingly, the two got along quite well.

Otherwise, they wouldn't have been chatting during their battle. If it had been Reggie, Silas wouldn't have said a word.

"You know Reggie though," Celeb said jokingly.

He was well aware that Silas didn't care for Reggie and honestly, Celeb didn't either.

Reggie had stirred up quite a bit of dislike from others that very first night in the dining hall. Word had it that Cerulean Gym had to give him a stern talking-to before he stopped with his reckless behavior.

"Oh, please. That guy's just weird," Silas said, shaking his head slightly. "Doesn't matter to me. As long as he's a competitor, that's enough. I don't see us ever having a real conversation."

"Exactly," Celeb said with a nod. He then gestured subtly toward a corner of the room. "Look."

There, in the corner, sat a man in a black suit. The lively atmosphere seemed to have nothing to do with him as he quietly ate alone.

It was Reggie.

"Yikes. He looks completely isolated," Silas remarked with a sigh.

Celeb chuckled. "He brought it on himself. No one's really going to support someone with that kind of attitude. Especially in a setting like this—no one wants to talk to him."

Reggie finished his meal and left shortly after. No one paid his departure any mind.

Before long, Silas and Celeb seamlessly shifted the conversation to a topic that concerned all trainers.
