Chapter 58 - Chapter 58: Reggie and Hayato

Silas went over his own commands in detail, and sure enough, there were quite a few problems.

After all, up until now, he hadn't had much actual battle experience.

Many of the strategies he used in wild battles simply didn't work in official matches.

Although he had trained and sparred with other Trainers before, it had never felt like this and the opponents' strength hadn't been as close to his either.

Sometimes, when completely overpowering a weaker opponent, it was impossible to see flaws in his command because the Pokémon's strength would mask them.

In a way, this match had served as a wake-up call for Silas.

His own strength still wasn't enough. If it were, he could've won just by attacking head-on.

"And now, please welcome Reggie from Cerulean Gym and Hayato from Saffron Gym to the battlefield!"

Ten minutes passed quickly while Silas was lost in thought, and the two Trainers on stage were already in position.

"Go, Gulpin!"

"Go, Drowzee!"

Unlike Silas and Celeb, both of these Trainers unexpectedly chose to open the match with their weakest Pokémon.

Silas couldn't help but feel like Reggie's expression darkened a little.

And it made sense—Psychic-types were especially strong against Poison-types.

Carefully observing both sides, Silas noticed the Sludge and Poison Gas sprayed by Gulpin was even starting to corrode part of the rocky field. His expression grew serious.

Such potent toxins and this was just a Swalot. Once it evolved into a Swalot, the poison would be even more intense.

Combined with a combo of Stockpile, Swallow, and Spit Up, its future strength would be nothing to scoff at.

And that Drowzee wasn't ordinary either.

Watching it continuously torment Gulpin using Disable, Confusion, and Hypnosis, Silas was genuinely impressed by its psychic prowess.

It was worth noting that Psychic-type Pokémon also took a long time to reach their full potential just a bit less than Ghost-types and Dragon-types.

For a Drowzee at this stage to use its moves this effectively against Gulpin, even considering the type advantage, it was clear how well it had developed.

"Shadow Ball!"

Reggie squinted his eyes, seizing the opportunity to command Gulpin to use the one move that was super effective against Psychic-types.

Hayatao's face changed instantly. Very few Gulpin knew Shadow Ball, and since Reggie hadn't used it before, even though he had considered the possibility, he'd thought it too unlikely and hadn't prepared for it.

"Teleport!"

As the Shadow Ball flew rapidly toward Drowzee, Hayato had no choice but to order it to dodge.

Drowzee's figure flickered but it failed to use Teleport.

Reggie slowly lowered his clenched fist. As expected, that Drowzee had only barely been able to use Teleport to begin with, and after all its energy consumption earlier, there was no way it could pull it off now.

Silas shook his head. Teleport isn't a technique that Psychic-type Pokémon can just master casually. Besides requiring a strong foundation of power, it also demands relentless training. After all, it involves spatial displacement.

If not practiced properly, or if the user is in poor condition or lacks sufficient strength, it's easy for the move to fail. Trying to teleport with another person is even more difficult and can lead to life-threatening accidents.

On the battlefield, the Shadow Balls struck Drowzee one after another. The Pokémon let out painful cries, and combined with the poisoning, it quickly lost its ability to battle.

But the Gulpin that launched the attacks wasn't in good shape either its body was covered in wounds, and it was breathing heavily.

Next, Hayato sent out his second Pokémon Lunatone which defeated Gulpin without much suspense. However, it unfortunately ended up poisoned as well.

Although the damage wasn't significant due to the type matchup, the status condition was still a major headache.

Reggie then sent out his Skorupi to stall for time, but Hayato's Lunatone used Rock Slide to wear it down considerably as well. If it weren't for Bug-type moves being particularly effective against Lunatone, Reggie might've even been at a disadvantage this round.

Fortunately, Lunatone lost its ability to fight first.

When Hayato's third Pokémon, Exeggutor, was sent out, Silas's face twitched visibly.

He had wanted to complain the moment he got the information.

Seriously? You're telling me this guy is just a regular trainer funded by the Saffron City Gym?

Drowzee was one thing he could accept that it might've been obtained through sheer luck.

But Lunatone? That's a rare Pokémon how did he just get one?

And if his starter was an Exeggcute, they just gave him a Leaf Stone to evolve it into Exeggutor right away?

Silas admitted he was a little jealous.

Even though his own Pokémon, Roggenrola, had a three-stage evolution line and was arguably stronger than Lunatone, it was still a rare Psychic-type Pokémon they gave this guy. And that Leaf Stone wouldn't have been low quality either it must've been expensive.

Looking back at what the Pewter City Gym had provided him it had seemed pretty decent at first but in comparison, the gap became painfully clear.

Silas muttered to himself. No wonder it is Saffron City, the most prosperous metropolis in Kanto. Of course they'd have the money.

As Reggie sent out his final Pokémon, Staraptor, to face the already injured Exeggutor, Silas could tell the battle was as good as over.

There was nothing to be done. Skorupi's Bug-type moves were extremely effective against Hayato's Pokémon. With their levels being about the same, Skorupi had already taken down one and a half Pokémon on its own.

Not to mention Staraptor's Flying-type advantage over Grass-types Hayato didn't stand a chance.

Sure enough, under Staraptor's assault, Exeggutor quickly fell.

The referee promptly declared Reggie the winner, advancing him to the finals to face Silas.

Silas stood up and went straight to Nurse Joy to retrieve his Pokémon.

Mostly, he just wanted to avoid running into Reggie on the way.

Back in the preparation area, Silas began strategizing.

Judging from Reggie's performance just now, Silas still had a clear advantage. The plan he had made the previous night was solid there were no major surprises or adjustments needed.

Gulpin and Skorupi would be facing his Roggenrola and Combusken. Just looking at type matchups, Reggie was already at a disadvantage. What's more, Silas's Pokémon were overall superior in capability.

The best strategy would be to lead with Combusken, since Staraptor was very unlikely to appear first.

That way, whether facing Skorupi or Gulpin, the outcome would be in his favor.

If Reggie started with Gulpin and didn't switch out, then the worst case would be Combusken getting poisoned while still taking it down.

The key would then be to defeat Skorupi quickly prolonging that fight could lead to a trade or worse, needing Pidgeot to step in and take damage.

But if the opponent started with Skorupi, there'd be no problem. Once Skorupi went down, Combusken could immediately deal with Gulpin. If needed, he could just switch to Roggenrola to clean it up.

And a final matchup between Pidgeot and Staraptor would definitely favor him.

And this was just considering the worst-case scenario. If his read on Reggie's strategy was correct, the most ideal outcome would be Combusken taking down two Pokémon on its own, maybe even chipping Staraptor before going down.

Of course, he could also lead with Roggenrola. In that case, he'd need to…

As the final preparations settled into place, a strange smile appeared on Silas's face.
