Georgie's POV
"Back to high school… again. Hufft." I looked around. Some of the faces were familiar—memories from Georgie's past helping me recognize them.
I made my way to my classroom and glanced at the students hanging around.
There were punks, cheerleaders, hippies… I didn't care much about the labels. But one thing was clear—no one wanted to miss out on their high school years.
Just then, a girl stepped out of the restroom. "Hey, Veronica!" I greeted her with a smile.
She looked at me, confused. "Why are you smiling like that, Georgie? It's weird."
"Yeah? Well… my little brother's starting school here today." I said, shrugging.
"That's something you're proud of?" she asked with a strange look, like she wasn't sure why we were even having this conversation. "Why am I even talking to you?".
"As a big brother, I'm proud of him. His name's Sheldon. And to answer your question—because you're kind… and beautiful." I said, flashing her one last smile before walking away.
Leave a message and go. That's my strategy. She'll wonder why I said she was kind and beautiful. She already knows she's beautiful, sure—but how did I know she was kind?.
"Wait…" she called out. I was already down the hall but turned to look at her.
"Yeah?" I shouted back. Maybe she expected me to come over again. But I didn't.
I just smiled and waved. "Bye, Veronica."
"What?!" she grunted, clearly annoyed.
I wandered down the school hallway, just taking everything in. If there was one place I truly wanted to see—it was the music room.
Yeah… I love music.
Back then, I only played around with my brother… my 'other brother'. But now, I had real talent. And a voice worth something.
"Hello, Mrs. Fenley." I said as I stepped into the room, spotting her arranging the musical instruments.
She looked up, her face lighting up with a warm smile. "Hello, Georgie."
"No one's helping you?" I asked, walking closer. The room was empty—still early morning, and classes hadn't started yet. But Mrs. Fenley was already getting everything ready.
"Nope. hehe, you want to help me?" she chuckled lightly, not really expecting me to say yes.
"Sure." I said without hesitation.
Surprised, she blinked as I began lifting chairs. "Um… alright…" she said, pretending to ignore me—but I noticed her sneaking glances every now and then, probably checking if I was goofing off.
"And… here you go." I said after arranging a few chairs. "Need anything else, Mrs. Fenley?"
"What's going on, Georgie? Is this some kind of punishment game? Where are your friends?" she asked, looking around as if expecting someone to pop out.
"Ha! No punishment, I swear."
She stopped searching and studied my face. Then a sudden realization hit her.
"Ah… you're nervous, huh? Because your little brother is going to be your schoolmate now?"
Well, suck it. I was just trying to be nice.
"…Yeah. I'm nervous. And honestly, a little scared."
She stepped closer and sat beside me.
"Why are you afraid?"
"My little brother… he's different. You know what I mean, right? He's nine and already in high school. I'm pretty sure no one else in Texas—or maybe even the world—is doing that."
I sighed. The truth was, nobody liked Sheldon… except us—his family.
To others, he's just this annoying little creature. There's no doubt he'll be bullied.
"Isn't that something amazing though?" she asked.
She clearly didn't know Sheldon yet.
"No. It would be amazing if he had… you know, a sense of modesty toward others."
"Hmm… I've never met him, but I doubt it's that bad…"
I shook my head slowly. She got the message.
"…That bad, huh?"
*RIIING
"Well… I should get going." I said, standing up as Mrs. Fenley rose too.
"Thank you for helping me, Georgie." she said, giving my hair a little ruffle.
"Hey, don't touch the hair." I said, ducking away as she laughed.
"See you later, Mrs. Fenley. And hey—maybe give me some extra credit for helping out."
She laughed again. "Now I see why you were helping me!"
Of course, she knew I was joking. We both shared a laugh before I left the room.
As I walked toward my class, I remembered—today would be the first time I'd share a homeroom with Sheldon.
We were both assigned to Mrs. MacElroy's class.
(I'm not sure how that works—Georgie's a sophomore and Sheldon's a freshman? Can someone explain that? I'm not American.)
The hallway was starting to clear out when I noticed someone standing at the classroom door.
"Mom?" I called out. It was Mary, my mom. She had dropped off Sheldon for his first day. When I called her, she turned toward me,
Her eyes locked onto mine.
"Is Sheldon already inside?" I asked.
She didn't answer right away. Instead, she just stared at me—like she was searching for something deeper in my eyes.
"Hufftt… It's me, Mom. I just feel different now, alright?"
I sighed. My mom still didn't quite believe what was happening to me.
"…I'm sorry, Georgie. It's just—your grandfather wanted to talk to you—" she said.
I let out another deep sigh, "Grandpa's dead, Mom… seriously?" and looking at her incredibly.
"Sorry…" she said with an awkward smile.
I shook my head. I understood. I could see how scared she was of me now.
"Alright… fine. You can call Pastor Jeff to the house later. Let him see for himself if I'm really possessed by a demon or not."
She nodded slowly, still staring into my eyes, like she was trying to find something in them.
"What's your favorite color?" she asked suddenly.
"It's green, Mom. Anyway, I need to get inside before Mrs. MacElroy starts yelling at me. And don't worry—Sheldon's going to be just fine."
I walked past her into the classroom. She stayed standing outside, still peeking through the door. I knew she was worried—maybe not just about Sheldon, but about me too. Probably even more about me, now that she thought I might be 'possessed.'
3rd Person POV
A few minutes later, Mary left—but instead of heading back to her car, she walked straight to George's office.
"George!"
"Mary?! What are you doing here?" George asked, breathing heavily and sweating a bit.
Mary noticed and frowned. "What happened to you?"
Before George could answer, Coach Wilkins spoke up.
"He's been running all over the school looking for your boy, Georgie. But he couldn't find him anywhere."
"Yeah… I don't know where that kid is." George muttered, slumping into his chair to catch his breath.
"You didn't check the music room." Coach Wilkins added but George ignored him. "Yeah, whatever…" he muttered and went back to writing reports.
"I just saw him, actually." Mary said. "Right after I dropped Sheldon off at his classroom."
George sat up immediately. "Really? Let's go to the hospital. Now."
"Whoa, whoa—slow down, Coach. You've got a schedule today." Coach Wilkins reminded him, waving a clipboard.
Mary looked uncomfortable. "I don't think anything's wrong with Georgie…" She was about to explain more, but she noticed Coach Wilkins still standing nearby, able to hear everything, so she stopped.
Coach Wilkins raised an eyebrow, glancing between the two. "Come on… this is our office." he grumbled.
George waved him off, and Wilkins finally stepped out with a little grumble shaking his head.
Once they were alone, Mary continued.
"I talked to him. He said I could call Pastor Jeff to the house—to check on him. And before you get mad, he's the one who suggested it. He didn't even mind."
George, who looked like he was about to yell, paused and exhaled slowly.
Truth was, he felt the same way Mary did. Something was definitely different about their son. And now Georgie was claiming he'd changed… that he wanted to be better.
But as parents, they didn't believe him.
Was that really the right thing to do?
"Alright." George finally said. "I'll go check on him during practice… see how he's doing."
Mary let out a relieved sigh. "Thank you."
George nodded and motioned for her to head home.
Of course, Mary planned to talk to Pastor Jeff—and probably her mother, too.
