Marie's pov
After each of my classes, I went straight home, and I have been doing everything in my power to stay away from Jason. I've been keeping myself busy, and it's been working out all right.
I simply wasn't emotionally prepared to talk to my dad, so I've been ignoring his messages and emails.
Flashback
Once again, he was late, and he left us waiting until my mother had to go to sleep. The dinner he had promised us did not go as planned. For the past few weeks his schedules had changed again in a way that didn't make sense; he was gone before sunrise and back at midnight.
I quietly made my way downstairs and toward the hallway. There he was, standing close to the coatrack with his back against me, removing his expensive leather coat. I noticed that there was smeared blood, which was dry and faint, beneath his sleeve.
'Papa?' my voice cracked.
He turned quickly towards me, his eyes flashing with surprise and anger. 'Marie, sweetheart you scared me.'
