Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The Priest Who Remembered

---

⚔️ Scene 1 – Aftermath of Rewrite

Ash drifted through the air like snow.

Kael stood at the peak of Aegis Academy's spire, rewriting the very stone with his steps.

His eyes no longer blinked.

He didn't speak — he wrote.

Below, Cassia stared at him with awe and horror.

Students were weeping — not from pain, but from the emptiness.

Until a voice cut through the silence.

> "You've written many truths, boy.

But will you dare face the ones you ran from?"

---

🌒 Scene 2 – The Cloaked Arrival

From the edge of the broken courtyard,

a lone priest stepped forward.

He wore no gold.

No sigil.

Just plain robes covered in ash.

His staff wasn't divine — it was made from a broken crucifix, once used to burn a child.

Kael's gaze shifted.

> "You shouldn't exist," Kael said.

> "And yet I do," the priest replied. "Because I remember what you don't."

---

🕳️ Scene 3 – Echoes of Sin

Cassia drew her sword.

"You're with the gods?"

> "No," the priest said, "I was exiled by them.

Because I refused to erase you."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

> "Then why are you here now?"

The priest's voice cracked.

"I came to ask… do you remember the child you killed?"

The world stood still.

Kael's fire flickered.

> "I never—"

> "Not as Aric Vale. Not as Kael.

But as one of your former names."

Kael's fingers trembled.

Behind his many rewrites…

there were blank gaps.

---

🩸 Scene 4 – The Forgotten Guilt

The priest raised a stone pendant.

It glowed blood-red.

Images poured into the air.

A boy — younger than Kael had ever remembered — stood in a burning house, holding a dagger.

Another child lay on the ground, lifeless.

> "You were five years old.

They called it an accident.

The gods called it a curse.

But I saw your eyes.

You knew what you did."

Kael stepped back.

The Hollow inside him stirred.

> "That wasn't me," Kael muttered. "It couldn't have been—"

> "It was one of you. One of the rewritten lives.

And they erased it.

But I never forgot."

---

🧠 Scene 5 – Doubt in the Rewrite

For the first time since claiming his identity,

Kael faltered.

He had destroyed thrones.

Unwritten laws.

Collapsed memory grids.

But now… someone spoke of a truth he himself had buried.

> "Are you rewriting the world, Kael," the priest said,

"or just rewriting your guilt?"

The words echoed like judgment.

---

🌌 Scene 6 – Duel of Memory

Kael lifted his hand.

"Ink of truth: Return."

He tried to rewrite the priest.

But nothing happened.

> "I am a vessel of memory," the priest said. "I carry no code — only truth.

You cannot rewrite what is not part of the system."

Kael clenched his fist.

The air warped.

The sky bled symbols.

> "You remember something that I don't," he whispered.

> "Then take it back," the priest said.

"Burn away your pride — and take it back."

---

💔 Scene 7 – The Memory Kael Couldn't Kill

Kael stepped into the memory.

He saw the child version of himself —

wild eyes, trembling hands,

a knife in his grip.

It wasn't murder.

It wasn't justice.

It was panic.

He had struck out in fear.

And they had burned the house to erase it.

> "You weren't a monster," the priest said softly,

"but the world called you one,

and so you became it."

Kael returned to the present.

The Hollow inside him was silent.

He didn't kill the priest.

He knelt before him.
