Chapter 14 - Not Too Late

Naro did not know what the adults had been discussing in the bedroom. The atmosphere had been tense, he could gather that much, but this was the full extent of his awareness.

Initially, Naro had considered it impossible to grasp the subject of the conversation without first understanding the language being spoken. The words were completely unintelligible, so he had not bothered to try.

However, shortly after the doctor had finished examining him with the strange instruments. he announced something to the room, his voice full of gravity. Whatever the announcement was, it appeared to have devastated Naro's mother.

Naro had seen her face drain of color as the reality of the words sank in.

Just as she had begun to break down into tears, Naro found himself being whisked away to a different room. The movement felt abrupt, disorienting.

His mind cascaded into a chain of thought.

The announcement must have been connected to the doctor's examination. If it had caused his mother to cry, then it could not possibly be good news for him. A sinking feeling settled in his stomach, tightening like a vice.

Was he terminally ill?

If so, then what was the specific condition?

He did not feel any problems with his body. Even after waving his arms for minutes on end, he was not tired.

If anything, he felt more energetic than when he began.

Was it a dormant illness that had yet to manifest?

Or was it somehow related to the air of tension from before?

Had they anticipated something that concerned his future?

While he thought to himself, through his intuition, Naro could feel that points were still being accumulated. Even though there were no notifications, he could sense…

As Naro continued to think over what he had just witnessed, he was passed over from the doctor to a different man. From the subservient gestures of the latter, Naro assumed that he was now in the hands of a servant.

Was his new family rich?

A sudden thought sparked in Naro's head.

Family politics.

If his family was rich, then the expectations for the children would be elevated. Perhaps the tension in the room before had not been related to his health at all, but to his talent.

The doctor had examined him, finding that he was somewhat lacking compared to his brothers and sisters.

Therefore, the succession in the family would not pass to him. In addition, his mother, as a member of the harem, would have a lower position in the eyes of the father. The combination of lower prospects for herself and her child could have caused his mother to break down.

However, it was all just speculation.

Naro shook the thought from his head, not wanting to prejudge the situation.

Perhaps there was no harem. And talent was a nebulous concept on the Blue Planet. It was impossible to know if it was a more concrete and measurable asset in the current world.

Meanwhile the servant had begun to clean him, applying a warm cloth to different parts of his body. Naro did not resist, but he also did not let it stop him from accumulating points.

Perhaps, under different circumstances, Naro would have taken a break, but he had no assurances that he was actually safe in this life. Moreover, as an infant, he was at his most vulnerable.

If there was an illness dormant inside of him, then it could strike at any time.

If his family had external enemies he could be assassinated by poison or dagger.

Training was the most important priority. There had not been any changes to his body yet, but he had faith in the system. It was the only reliable way to overcome potential dangers.

Even if he could gather more information from his surroundings, if it was at the expense of his training, he wouldn't do it. As an infant, how could more information help him?

He could not act on it. He could not jump out of his crib or escape from adults. After all, he was still just a baby.

Once he had grown up a little, it would not be too late to learn more.

For now, there was little else he could do apart from farming system points.

"No wonder the Master was in such a state. This little demon baby is relentless."
