Chapter 25: This Isn't in the Contract…
"You did well tonight." Ethan's voice was low as he unfastened his cufflinks beside her in the car.
Li smiled faintly. "I was just playing my role. That's what you pay me for, isn't it?"
His eyes flicked to her, unreadable. "It didn't feel like acting."
Her fingers tightened on her clutch. That kiss… she could still feel the heat of it lingering on her lips. She had told herself it was just for show. But the way he looked at her afterward—soft, almost tender—was not written in any contract.
"Let's not blur the lines," she said lightly. "It's safer that way."
"Is that what you want?" Ethan asked suddenly, leaning toward her. "To keep pretending none of this is real?"
Li's breath caught. His tone wasn't teasing—it was almost… hurt?
She turned to the window, hiding her conflicted expression.
Don't forget why you're here, Li. This isn't love—it's survival.
The silence stretched between them until the car pulled into the apartment parking lot.
"I'll walk you up," Ethan said as the driver opened the door.
"Not necessary."
He ignored her and followed anyway.
When they reached her door, he hesitated. "Li…"
She turned. "Yes?"
For a moment, he looked like he wanted to say something—something real. But then he smiled, cold and professional again.
"Rest well. Tomorrow's meeting is at 10. Don't be late."
He left before she could reply.
And behind the door, Li leaned against the wall, heart pounding.
Why does it hurt… when it's not supposed to matter?
