Chapter 1 - One

Myra sighed to herself softly. Never in a million years did she expect her father to resort to this. Her eyes fell on her sister who was snoring softly beside her. This should have been about Kira and not her. But after the accident that her sister had encountered, she had no choice but to step in for her.

Seeing Kira's life in danger made Myra understand the gravity of her father's business collapsing. Many employees had to be laid off and were probably at risk of being left with nothing in the end. It was inescapable that her family would end up being targeted.

Even though the accident was quite unfortunate, Myra deemed her sister as lucky because she was not in the position to be a bride. Her father had enlisted the help of a rival company whose owner was an old acquaintance. In return for helping him out, the owner wanted him to give one of his daughters' hand in marriage to his grandson. That daughter could have been Kira. It should have been Kira. But Myra felt she had to take this step. Her sister had been the one that sacrificed her own choices and joined the family business at such a young age. She didn't have a chance to choose what she really wanted and she never complained, at least not that she knew of. And coupled with the recent events at the company that had taken a toll on her, Myra decided to approach her father and let him know of her decision.

She peeled the duvet off her torso and swung her lower body to the side so her feet were touching the furry carpet.

Subconsciously, she rubbed her arms lightly. She wasn't sure why she felt cold all of a sudden. Was it the anxiety kicking in or did the weather change drastically? She pushed herself off the bed and headed to her wardrobe to find her hoodie. Majority of her clothes were in her office as she sometimes slept over. Not finding it at first glance, she began to use her hand to part the hangers swiftly. 'Where is it?' She thought to herself. Suddenly, she remembered taking it to her office few days before. "No!" She whispered to herself. 'I didn't bring it back?' she asks herself silently. Frustrated, she pulled on some of her outfits at once. It was then she noticed that some of her clothes had fallen and were buried by the ones still hung. She pushed them back from the middle simultaneously as if drawing the drapes.

There was a particular outfit that caught her attention and she picked it up slowly and lightly trying to avoid creasing it. It was a white armless dress heavily decorated with stones on the body and had layers of net flared at the waist. Myra lowered herself gently to the floor with a look of defeat on her face. She suddenly felt all her confidence from before evaporate. Who was she kidding? Marriage wasn't a joke. And she was in no place to make this decision.

The next morning, Myra woke up to the reflection of the sun almost blinding her. This couldn't have happened unless she was on Kira's side of the bed. Startled, she sat up and looked around for her sister. She was met with an empty room instead. She stifled back a yawn before proceeding to stretch in a very lazy way. She crawled to her bedside table on the other side of the bed and reached out to her phone.

08:11

That was the time on the notification bar when she unlocked her phone. Myra groaned inwardly as she let her legs lead her to the bathroom. At this rate, she was going to be late for work. Extremely late.

"Good morning dad," Myra greeted as she sauntered across the living room. Her father was at the dining reading the day's paper as relaxed as ever. When he didn't reply, she concluded that he was probably engrossed. She smiled evilly to herself. Only one way to get his attention.

She retrieved her coat from the rack and picked out her shoes. "Bye dad!" She yelled and banged the door on her way out. Her shoulders bounced happily as her lips tugged into a happy smile.

"Myra!" She turned around and peered at the window where her father now stood.

"Morning dad!" She said sheepishly.

"Have a great day, dear," his voice held so much warmth.

"You too," she replied and waved in his direction.

She turned her back to the house and walked to her car. She placed her things in the passenger's seat and hurried to the driver's side.

"Hey Myra!"

"Kira!" Myra voiced as her sister slowly approached her from the gate. Her movements were supported by the crutches she leaned on.

"I was wondering where you went so early in the morning," Myra confessed.

"I just took a stroll around the neighborhood," she paused. "You are really late today, " she stated.

As if on cue, Myra's phone rang. She fished it out of her pocket and saw her co-worker's name flashing on the screen.

"I have to go," she said to her sister feeling a little guilty. "I'll see you later."

She dashed inside the car and immediately revved her engine.

Kira limped quickly to a safer side of the road to pave way for her sister. She waved lightly as Myra drove past her. Then she headed indoors to rest.
