Chapter 6 - World Wide Wave

The world did not sleep that night.

As the alien broadcast faded from the minds of every human being, an undercurrent of disbelief rippled outward—low at first, then rising, crashing into every continent with the force of a tidal wave of alarm. Cities buzzed with late-night sirens. Radios and TVs switched from scheduled programming to nonstop breaking news bulletins. Social media became an inferno of theories, confessions, and conspiracy. Streets teemed with disoriented citizens—some distraught, others furious, many in denial.

Even in the dead of night, Manila's bustling urban glow lit a stark tableau: a woman knelt on the sidewalk, hands raised, wet with tears, praying as though the very air trembled with unseen dangers. In Berlin, activists clutching placards—some reading "We Want Answers" in crisp Protest Deutsch—began marching toward government buildings. In Lagos, churches flung open their doors for emergency vigils, lanterns illuminating the faces of those desperate for hope. And in neon-lit Tokyo, government officials, barely awake, scrambled to convene emergency cabinets in hushed backrooms and recessed corridors.

The din was deafening, and the staccato chaos was universal.

All across the globe, news outlets grasped for coherence. Every channel leads with the same tremulous headline:

"Global Telepathic Broadcast Stuns Humanity: Who Are 'They'?" "

In government corridors and secure command centers, panic simmered beneath forced calm. At the United Nations headquarters, communications teams struggled to keep pace with cascading press releases; nations exchanged worried pleas, and policy advisors tapped at keyboards as if the future depended on quick typing—because it did.

At exactly 9:00 AM Eastern Time, the White House convened a hastily organized press conference in the venerable James S. Brady Press Briefing Room. Cameras flashed like an urgent heartbeat, microphones clustered in a chaotic forest, and reporters buzzed like unsettled bees.

President Mitchell Carter, world-weary but resolute, strode to the podium. He adjusted the tie meant to project calm—the same calm he was desperately trying to summon within himself. Only after a stifled cough did he speak.

"Good morning, fellow Americans—and everyone watching around the globe. Last night, something extraordinary occurred. A phenomenon of unprecedented nature. A voice—or perhaps an experience—entered into the minds of every human. What we know is limited," he said, pausing so his words would land, "but we are deploying our best scientists, military advisors, and international allies to unravel what happened."

The room teemed with tension and skepticism; a reporter vaguely resembled a man who'd never quite absorbed the capacity of human panic.

Next to take the podium was NASA Administrator Dr. Ellen DeWitt, a former astronaut whose voice carried the weight of scientific authority, honed by years circling the planet alone.

"From an astronomical standpoint, we detected atmospheric anomalies in low Earth orbit following the incident. Lights—certain energy signatures—visible to satellites, yet unrelated to any human-made craft or phenomenon. "

A reporter from Reuters raised a hand. "Dr. DeWitt, what about the Moon? The Apollo missions should have picked up anything so powerful—why was nothing detected then? "

Dr. DeWitt nodded. "Excellent question. The lunar missions encountered no evidence of such technology. What we may be dealing with now is either a cloaking mechanism far beyond our methods or access to a dimension outside our traditional detection."

A CNN correspondent followed up. "Could this broadcast have been produced on Earth? A psychological operation of vast scale? "

President Carter replied sternly, "All options remain open. The magnitude and uniformity of this broadcast match no known terrestrial capability."

Up next was Al Jazeera. "Do we know if these entities are friend or foe? Should we prepare for conflict or diplomacy? "

Dr. DeWitt took a measured breath. "At this stage, assigning intent is premature. The message—a voice in thought—was more cautionary and advisory than overtly threatening. We ask the public to remain calm while we assess."

An ABC News journalist leaned forward. "The broadcast mentioned 'chosen individuals.' Have any been identified? "

Carter offered a measured response. "We are investigating reports from every corner of the globe. At this moment, we have no confirmation of identities or numbers."

Meanwhile, online, the reaction was electric. Forums exploded with speculation. Memes appeared within minutes. Posts soaked in paranoia, praise, humor, despair—and everything in between. TikTok clips of strange flashes and unexplained lights gathered billions of views. Across Instagram and Twitter, hashtags like #TheVoice, #TheDome, and #ChosenOne trended—sparked by curiosity, fear, and optimism.

But beyond the public frenzy, the gears of covert agencies clicked into motion.

In a secure Langley briefing room, an elite task force decrypted satellite data and cross-referenced anomalies. In Europe, drone squadrons crawled over patterns in the magnetic field—whispers of a 'dome'-style structure emerging on anomaly maps. In Beijing, classified lunar mission files were dusted off and unearthed for new analysis.

Suspicion festooned some circles like a poisonous vine. Several governments had quietly launched surveillance on thousands of citizens—profiling those who'd posted about "hearing the voice" or who'd claimed to experience "activation symptoms" like sudden strength, clarity, or heightened senses. If there were "chosen individuals," the message was clear: find them first, before they could find power.

Yet the world didn't know who had awakened. How many awakened? Or what exactly had occurred in their minds—or, perhaps, their very souls.

But one thing was certain: the race had begun.

Under the glare of scrutiny—or ambition—every government and agency now knew they were not in control of the narrative. The terrain of power had shifted. The concept of destiny had shifted. The very nature of human potential had shifted.

Back in the White House press room, President Carter stood ready for one final question.

"We've mobilized an international working group," he said, voice resolute amid the maelstrom. "We will monitor for further phenomena. We will protect our citizens—and if these entities wish dialogue, we will be open. But make no mistake: we will match threat with strength, diplomacy with resolve."

Dr. DeWitt closed with a warning that carried a soft tremor of wonder.

"What we are experiencing now may be the opening notes of a new symphony—one composed by forces older, wiser, and more powerful than humanity. Will the rest of the music bow to fear… or rise to hope? "

As the press conference ended, the world remained in flux. But now, a seed had been planted: the record of awakening, of a coming storm. For the rest of humanity—including people like Alex with their hidden talents, unclaimed destinies, and newly forged alliances—nothing would ever feel the same again.

Because in the night that heard the Voice… the world had truly woken up.
