Chapter 36 - chapter 36 Noelle’s Shattered Control

The forest around the Black Bulls' current mission site was calm, but Kael's senses told a different story. Magic crackled subtly in the air—unsteady, volatile. He walked through dense foliage with Asta, Luck, and Noelle as part of a reconnaissance squad investigating a rogue magical beast sighting.

But Kael's eyes weren't just on the path ahead.

They kept drifting back to Noelle.

She was quieter than usual. Her usual sharp remarks had dulled. And her mana, typically poised like a coiled serpent, was twitchy. Unstable.

When they reached a clearing for camp, Kael finally asked.

"Noelle," he said gently, "you alright?"

Her violet eyes flicked to him. "Fine."

She wasn't.

---

Cracking Under Pressure

Noelle had always carried herself like a noble—chin up, spine straight, words with precision. But tonight, as the others gathered wood or scouted, she sat apart, arms wrapped tightly around herself.

Kael sat beside her without a word. After a moment, she exhaled.

"I lost control again," she whispered.

Kael remained still.

"I was practicing late last night in secret," she went on, "and my Sea Dragon's Roar turned into a cyclone. I almost hit Magna and Grey." Her fists clenched. "They laughed it off, but I saw it in their eyes. Fear."

"You think they're afraid of you?" Kael asked.

"I am afraid of me," she snapped—then immediately looked away, ashamed. "Sorry."

"Don't apologize for being honest," Kael said, his voice calm. "But Noelle... losing control doesn't make you dangerous. It makes you human."

She didn't respond, but her grip on her arms loosened slightly.

The Beast Awakens

They didn't get to talk much longer.

A spine-rattling roar shattered the night.

Asta was the first to leap up. "That's it! The beast!"

Kael drew his blade without hesitation. "Noelle, with me!"

The four raced through the forest until they came upon it—a massive chimera, fused with elemental cores. It snarled with fire lapping from its fanged mouth, vines coiling from its back like whips.

Kael stepped forward, anti-magic blade glowing. "We hold it here. Asta, flank from the right! Luck, hit from above!"

As they moved in sync, Kael noticed Noelle hesitating—mana leaking from her, turbulent.

She was trying to cast a defense spell—but it buckled mid-formation.

A vine lashed toward her.

Kael blurred forward—too late.

"Noelle!!" he shouted.

But she wasn't frozen.

She screamed—and magic exploded.

---

The Sea's Fury

A burst of spiraling water engulfed the chimera, smashing it into a nearby cliff. The pressure of her mana cracked the ground. A storm surged around her, wild, violent, but protective.

Kael shielded himself, eyes wide.

She had unleashed a new spell—one she had never controlled before.

She hovered in midair inside a rotating sphere of water—eyes blazing, lips parted as if still in shock. The chimera, stunned and injured, tried to rise—

Kael struck.

His blade plunged through its elemental core, negating it completely.

The beast fell still.

And the storm died.

Noelle collapsed to her knees, shaking.

Kael caught her before she hit the ground.

---

Tears and Truth

She trembled in his arms, her voice a broken whisper. "I didn't mean to… I just panicked..."

"You saved yourself," Kael said softly. "And you saved me."

"But what if next time I lose it again? Hurt someone I care about?"

Kael gently placed a hand on her cheek, turning her to meet his eyes. "Then I'll be there to help you take control. You're not alone anymore, Noelle."

She blinked, tears brimming.

She leaned into him slightly, head on his shoulder, breathing deep.

"…Thank you," she whispered.

Return to Camp

When they returned, Noelle walked taller. Her steps still carried that noble pride—but something else, too.

Trust.

Vanessa gave Kael a sly look when she noticed Noelle sticking close to him. "Well, well. Hero of the hour."

He just smiled.

He wasn't trying to be a hero.

But if being close to them—to her—meant being a shield for their pain, then he'd carry that role without hesitation.

Because Noelle Silva, for all her pride and elegance, had shown him something tonight:

Strength wasn't about control. It was about how you stood up after losing it.
