Chapter 39 - chapter 39 Training with Fuego

The capital shimmered beneath a midday sun as Kael stepped through the gates of the Vermillion family estate. Despite its grandeur, the estate carried a warm air—alive with fire, pride, and relentless determination. It was here, in the heart of a noble stronghold, that Kael was invited to train under one of the kingdom's most respected Magic Knight captains.

Fuegoleon Vermillion.

Captain of the Crimson Lion Kings. A man as composed as he was powerful—fire incarnate, wrapped in principle.

Kael approached the training grounds, his boots crunching over hardened earth scorched from countless battles. In the center stood Fuegoleon, his flame-stitched crimson cloak rippling in the breeze, grimoire in hand, aura calm yet commanding.

"You're early," Fuegoleon said without turning.

"Habit," Kael replied.

The captain finally faced him, his intense gaze steady. "Good. Let's begin."

---

Heat of the Moment

They started with meditation.

Kael expected fireballs. Instead, Fuegoleon had him kneel for an hour, breathing in silence.

"Power means nothing if your heart is in chaos," Fuegoleon explained. "Control your flame, or it will consume you."

Kael felt his body itch to move, to summon a weapon, to train physically—but the quietness grounded him. He thought of Asta's wild tenacity, Noelle's emotional waves, and Mimosa's calm strength. Then, he looked inward.

After meditation, the real work began.

Trial by Fire

Fuegoleon's flame lion roared into existence, charging at Kael with wild, controlled intensity. Kael spun into action, conjuring a twin saber set—Ashblades—designed for deflection and swift counters.

He leapt, twisted, and met the lion head-on.

Steel and flame collided.

Sweat poured down Kael's face as the heat surged. Fuegoleon's magic was relentless, but Kael responded with agility and instinct. When fire threatened to overwhelm him, he summoned a flame-resistant spear, forged through sheer thought.

Fuegoleon raised an eyebrow.

"You adapted mid-battle."

Kael panted. "My system lets me evolve faster than most."

"That's not just the system," Fuegoleon said. "You're not afraid to fall. You learn by fighting."

Kael smiled through the exhaustion. "I don't have time to waste."

---

Words of Flame

They paused by a fountain for water, both drenched in sweat and energy.

"Kael," Fuegoleon said, voice softer. "I've trained many knights. Some noble, some common. You… remind me of someone else."

"Who?"

"My sister. Mereoleona."

Kael blinked. "The lioness who hunts bears with her fists?"

Fuegoleon laughed. "She'd like you."

Then his eyes turned serious. "You carry something more than just magic. Like it's your duty to protect—at any cost."

Kael tensed slightly. "I've lost too much. I won't let it happen again."

Fuegoleon nodded. "Then you must be even stronger. Not just with power—but with heart."

---

Flames and Fusion

As the day drew on, Fuegoleon offered a final challenge.

"Show me everything. Not just your weapons. Fuse your magic. Use your spirit."

Kael took a breath, then summoned Lyra, the Spirit of Light. She shimmered beside him, a radiant presence bound to his soul.

"Ready?" she asked, wings unfolding.

"Always."

His crimson eyes burned brighter.

Lyra fused into his body, wrapping him in a luminous cloak of light. His weapon magic pulsed as he formed a dual glaive—each side glowing with anti-flame enchantments.

Fuegoleon grinned, pleased. "Then let's see how high you can climb."

Their battle ignited.

Flame against light. Will against will.

---

A Burn Worth Bearing

The clash lasted minutes, but it felt eternal. Each strike forged a new level of understanding in Kael. He parried fire snakes, countered burning pillars, and surged through heatwaves that would scorch most mages.

In a final move, he flipped through the air, glaive slicing through Fuegoleon's fire construct—ending the spar with a thunderous slam into the ground.

Silence followed.

Fuegoleon rose, brushing ash off his cloak.

"Well done."

Kael dropped to one knee, catching his breath.

The Ember of Growth

Before leaving, Fuegoleon placed a hand on Kael's shoulder.

"Never stop refining yourself. You may have strength, but a blade is only as sharp as the one who wields it."

Kael nodded. "Thank you, Captain."

"One day, I expect you'll stand as a protector of the kingdom. Perhaps even beside my sister… if you survive her training."

Kael paled. "Maybe I'll wait on that one."

Fuegoleon chuckled and turned toward the estate.

As Kael looked down at his hand—still glowing faintly with flame and spirit energy—he realized something:

This wasn't just training.

It was a forge.

And he had come out sharper.
