Zerra's heart thumped loudly against her chest. A thought flashed in her mind: so this was the purpose of Daniel's role? To speed up her zombie king transformation?
Closing her eyes, she braced for the impact. There were too many zombies, and she hoped that it would be quick. Just as she waited for the pain from the zombies' bites to come, she heard someone scowling. "Fool!"
She sprawled on a twitching zombie, and then another. Their smelly blood and yellow pus smeared on her. And the pain… it never came.
"Get up." Cassias called out to her.
She hurriedly got up, finding a trash can to vomit in. Her vomit only stopped after she sensed her stomach was completely empty. No matter which life it was, she never could get used to such a nauseating smell.
Especially now that she could turn into a fox. It gave her far more heightened sense than a human. The smell was magnified a few times over, and she became dizzy.
As her eyes looked up, she watched as Cassius accurately shot the last trudging zombie. He aimed for two vitals, brain and heart. He looked so cool, like those skilled snipers in the movies!
Her eyes searched around and found no traces of Daniel. That dog man was already gone to save his pathetic self.
"Are you alright?" Cassias approached her.
The smell must have driven her crazy enough that she openly complained in front of him. "I was so unlucky to run into zombies again, rotten things!"
She took a deep breath, and the smell assaulted her nose once again. Closing her eyes, she hypnotized herself to calm down. It was slowly working.
Something soft touched her face, and then hands and her small part of exposed skin on her legs. Startled, Zerra opened her eyes, which were soon widening in surprise.
Cassias was helping her to clean whatever stinky liquid it was using some tissues. Grabbing his hands, she stopped him and said in a stiff tone. "I can do it myself."
"Here." He offered the pack of tissues to her. Then, a bottle of water and a mask.
She cleaned her face with the water and put on her mask. It lessened her dizziness slightly.
"You two are here." Nyra appeared all of a sudden, interrupting both of them.
As soon as she opened her mouth, there were five zombies appearing from the door near her. Instinctively, Nyra used her power to burn the zombies, distracting them, and then stabbed their vitals with her long knife. She did that very efficiently and cleanly, like she had done that many times.
There wasn't even a single drop of stinky blood on her.
"You awakened fire ability?" Cassias' eyes flashed.
Nyra glanced at him and pursed her lips. "Yes… I suppose since Mr. Virethorn brought up this topic, you also awakened some kind of power, right?"
"I have lightning ability." Cassias nodded in affirmation.
Zerra secretly rolled her eyes. The two surely knew that the other would awaken some kind of power, yet they still pretended to be surprised!
"Ability? What kind of ability?" Here the cannon fodder number two jumped in and interrupted the main protagonists, who were trying to get to know each other.
Daniel peeked his head out from the cover of some tall shelves, avoiding Zerra's gaze guiltily, and focused on the other two. When he saw that it was already safe, he came out.
The sight of the torn, bloody mess inside the warehouse made him take a few steps back in fright, but he forced himself to hold on and approach them.
It was Nyra who answered him in a flat tone. "The world has become so unpredictable for us humans to live in. Just look at the zombies that started appearing. People started to get some superpowers. I guess that's the only way for us humans to preserve our kind."
"Can I see what kind of ability you have? Fire, right?" Daniel looked at Nyra in anticipation.
Nyra snapped her fingers, and fire appeared in her palm, burning fiercely. The fire was reflected in his pair of eyes, making them look like they were glowing.
She closed her palm. The fire died, and Daniel regained his senses. He glanced at the cold-faced Cassias and didn't dare to request the man to show his power to him.
"How can I awaken power like that?" Daniel asked in anticipation, his eyes ignited with desire.
Nyra shrugged. "Luck."
He seemed disappointed when he received such an answer from her. His gaze moved between Nyra and Cassias, as if marvelling their newfound power.
"If only I had such power… I might be able to find Buddy." He mulled over, slightly disappointed. It was the first time he mentioned his golden retriever's name, Buddy.
Yet, his disappointment vanished the moment his gaze trained to Zerra, thinking that she was the weakest in their current group. He lifted his chin with undisguised pride. As a man, he was clearly stronger than her.
"What power did you awaken?" Cassias opened his mouth. The question was directed at Zerra, whose mouth twitched in annoyance at Daniel's antics. His words interrupted her thoughts of ways to retaliate against Daniel…
She pursed her lips and crossed her arms over her chest. Stomping her feet to the ground, she pointed to Nyra. "She awakened a fire ability, but why did I only awaken a space ability? It can't help me fight at all!"
Her tantrum seemed to be directed at Nyra, but… satisfaction filled her chest when she saw Daniel's face crumble. Ha, take that, can you continue to act so smugly now?! She scolded him in her mind.
It was the way she usually acted anyway, and the main protagonists wouldn't find anything wrong with it.
"It's still very useful." Cassias told her, "We can store things with your space. It will be more convenient compared to backpacks. Leave the fight to us who are capable of it."
"How big is the space?" He continued with a question.
Zerra's eyes blinked rapidly, and her lips slightly pursed. She was currently in trouble.
Her space was too vast for an ordinary human ability user. In her impression, this inner space was one she had when she was in the celestial realm. Revealing such a secret was impossible.
Right, how big was the inner space of an ability user level one? She really didn't know!
