Chapter 9 - Reasoning

There was a reason Becky chose to come early to Neo City aside from hunting down Arthur. It was to establish her base of economy and also her control in the underworld.

They were both important for her future growth, so she needed to check up on them before she enrolled in the Falcon Academy, as the contact was usually very limited with outsiders once someone entered the Academy.

It was to create the perfect atmosphere for them.

Becky chose to oversee the economic part herself, as that didn't involve too much work. She already had some of her companies in Neo City, and combined with the hotel chain she got from her father, it was more than enough for the time being.

The other matter was control over the underworld, and there was no one better than Maric for that. He was also one of the reasons she came early to the city.

She wanted to make sure Maric was under her control.

As someone who knew the novel very well, Becky knew Maric thoroughly, as he had left a deep impression on her with his fierce loyalty and genius-level skill in managing people.

In just three years after the main story started, Maric had managed to become one of the Five Kings of the Underworld who ruled over the world from the shadows.

Yet, this wasn't the thing that most impressed Becky. There were many people with potential, after all.

What truly impressed her was his undying loyalty and a heart that never betrayed his beliefs.

In the novel, it was Arthur who had managed to get Maric under him after he was fired from the Sinclair Family. That's how Arthur had a loyal subordinate who ruled the underworld.

Even if Arthur was weaker and even when he did bad things, Maric still supported him silently, even if he disdained his actions.

But all of that ended when one day, Arthur ordered Maric to poison Becky and kill her in secret. The King of the Underworld couldn't follow his master's order for the first time in his life.

It was because Becky was genuinely a kind-hearted person before she met Arthur and had fed Maric's children when they were practically dying.

How could Maric take the life of someone who had kept his children alive? But he was also someone who couldn't go against his master's orders, so in the end, the man who had conquered the underworld committed suicide after alerting Becky.

That one act had saved Becky from Arthur's schemes.

It was a tragic end for someone like him, and even Becky had felt bad for him.

'There are some things he needs to improve on, so I'll help him this time,' Becky smiled as she looked at the open door. 'With this, I've already avoided one of the terrible fates. I wonder how much the plot will change because of me.'

She shook her head and was going to focus on the work again when her partner tapped on her shoulder.

"What's up with this guy Arthur?" Ruby asked. "I'm sure you two haven't even met each other."

As someone who had followed Becky for a long time, Ruby knew practically everything about her, so she was really confused.

Instead of answering, Becky just smiled mysteriously and asked, "What if I just want to kill him because I don't find him pleasing to the eyes?"

"Then, I'll kill him," Ruby stated as a matter of fact.

"Hehe, that's my sweet Ruby," Becky chuckled and turned her back towards the laptop. After a few seconds, she replied to her.

"It's because he has a very dangerous psychic innate Rune Sphere. Coupled with a terrible personality, he is bound to create too much trouble for me and the girls in the Academy."

Ruby was a smart woman and instantly understood the meaning behind her words. Still, she felt that Becky was hiding something, but she didn't pressure her.

She just nodded and said, "I'll also keep an eye out for his whereabouts. Once he is found, I'll personally go and take his head."

"No, we'll first check on him. After all, I only have the report, not confirmation," Becky shook her head. "Once we confirm the situation, I'll let you deal with him."

"You're going to meet him?" Ruby asked, surprise clear in her voice.

"No, I'm just surprised at how accommodating you're getting around men," Ruby smiled. "Just now, you also handled Maric pretty well. I'm sure Uncle will be pleased to hear this."

Becky paused, only now remembering that Becky had hated men due to her past. It showed in her mansion where she had hired only maids.

She pursed her lips and said, "I want to meet him, so this is a necessary step."

It wasn't a lie, as the novel's Becky had worked really hard to quell her hatred towards men just to meet her father.

Ruby bent forward and kissed Becky's cheek, and then whispered, "I'm glad to see your changes."

"Same goes for me," Becky chuckled.

Then, she focused on her work, which was a lot. The only good thing was that she had a good memory and a fast-calculating brain, so she was able to cover all of the hotels in just one day.

She hardly rested for the whole day and even appointed a new General Manager to handle the hotels. She was a woman in her late twenties with sharp business sense and loyalty.

She also suggested some changes that would benefit them in the long run. Although she didn't exactly remember all the details of the novel, she knew a few things that would explode in the future, so she was definitely going to use them to her advantage.

If she killed the protagonist, the plot she knew would definitely suffer from butterfly effects and deviate a lot, so there was really no point in preserving it.

Once that was done and Becky had secured her future financially to some extent, it was already evening, and the sun was drowning in the horizon.

However, things were far from over.
