Chapter 49 - Chapter 49: The Madness of Nanaue

The city of Bethel was occupied by the Axis powers. It was a strategic location and a transportation and supply hub, so it was heavily guarded. Artillery batteries were erected on the city walls, providing fire suppression for the front. At the entrance to the city gate, there were numerous bunkers to prevent the enemy from charging head-on.

The soldiers of the 107th Infantry Regiment hid in the trenches, enduring the heavy snow and scorching cold, looking helplessly toward the city. They had launched several charges, only to be forced back under a hail of heavy fire. On the battlefield, the scrapped tanks seemed to tell a story of the enemy's terrifying power.

At this time, a helicopter appeared in the sky. Steve leaped out, the Vibranium shield strapped to his back. With his amazing physical strength, he could jump from a height of more than twenty meters without injury. As soon as he landed, he raised his round shield and approached the nearest bunker.

Suddenly, dense machine-gun fire erupted. The bullets hit the shield like a rainstorm, splashing sparks, but could not stop Steve from moving forward. The commando soldiers hid behind him, waiting to get close enough to destroy the fort with their bazookas.

Boom!

A blue beam of energy burst out, a strong light pulsing on the surface of the round shield. The terrifying impact sent Steve flying, and the team members who were hiding behind him were all knocked down at the same time. The first attack had failed.

Steve retreated. The commandos counted their numbers and found that three were killed in the initial exchange, a bad start to the day.

"What kind of weapon is that?" Steve asked a nearby officer. Beam weapons were simply unheard of. If the Allied forces hadn't seen the glow on the surface of the turrets and guessed that it took time to accumulate energy, they would probably have retreated long ago. At least the enemy's seemingly sci-fi artillery had a firing rate that was not as fast as ordinary artillery.

"Who knows what kind of new weapon the damn Nazis have? A single hit on a tank will destroy it. If we don't take down those artillery positions, we won't be able to capture the city." The officer looked at the Vibranium shield. There was only a charred layer on the surface with no signs of damage at all. He thought that if this kind of metal were used on a tank, it would be unstoppable.

Carter came over, poked her head out to look at the city wall, and said in shock, "The intelligence sent back by our agent was true. Hydra seems to have mastered a special energy source and has already weaponized it." There was no doubt that it was the Cosmic Cube found by the Red Skull.

"How about an air force bombing?" Steve suggested.

"It won't work," the officer said bluntly. "The city walls are equipped with anti-aircraft guns, so it's difficult for low-altitude fighters to approach. High-altitude bombers aren't accurate and will accidentally injure the residents in the city." The most fatal problem was that after a night of snowfall, a thick layer of snow had accumulated, with pits everywhere, making it difficult for even Steve to break through alone.

"We used howitzers and mortars. The enemy poured water on the surface of the walls, which became a thick layer of ice and couldn't be penetrated." They dared not use long-range artillery casually. The enemy had taken civilians with them as soon as they had taken control of the city, causing the Allied forces to be cautious and not dare to bomb indiscriminately.

For a moment, they were in a dilemma. If they relied on suicide charges, the entire 107th Regiment might be completely wiped out before they could capture the city. If they surrounded the enemy without annihilating them, there was a high probability that their own forces would be the first to collapse. The enemy could hide in their bunkers to keep warm, but the Allied forces did not dare to make a fire in the cold trenches for fear of becoming a target at night. If they were unlucky, the next rain would freeze them into ice sculptures.

"Look, who is that?" a soldier pointed into the distance.

Everyone looked at the person who was coming. They saw him standing with his hands behind his back, a calm and composed expression on his face. They couldn't even see his legs moving, as if he were gliding along the snow.

"You mortals, I, a great and powerful monk, have arrived. Please open the door and greet me immediately," Alan shouted toward the city gate, then bowed his head to remind, "Nanaue, be careful of the trees ahead."

That's right, it was Alan, stepping on Nanaue. Perhaps because of Nanaue's divine blood, he could fully demonstrate his abilities in an environment full of water, so it was reasonable for him to swim in the snow.

Steve shouted anxiously, "Alan, it's dangerous! Come back quickly!"

"What did you say? I don't eat rice noodles." Alan turned around, saw the heavy firepower coming, and immediately abandoned the shark and fled. Nanaue, however, kept swimming toward the city gate, causing a cloud of snow to drift away, which immediately attracted all the enemy firepower. But the bullets couldn't penetrate Nanaue's thick skin. Even because of his fast speed, the beam cannon on the city wall was half a beat slower. Given the enormous power of the turret and the lack of a fire control system, it was wishful thinking to lock onto such a fast-moving target.

"Hello, are you dead? It's your food delivery." Just as the firepower was concentrated on Nanaue, Alan quietly approached a bunker, lay on the roof, looked toward the firing port, and threw a grenade into it. In the narrow space of the bunker, the killing range of a grenade left a squad of machine gunners with nowhere to hide.

"Watch out, the Thunder of Annihilation is here."

"Open the door, express delivery! The girlfriend you bought online has arrived."

"I'm giving you a chance to restart your life."

"Sir, be careful not to burn your mouth with that lit grenade."

The bunkers that had previously blocked the Allied advance exploded one after another. The soldiers hiding in the trenches were stunned. Whose general is this? So brave!

"Launch a charge! Capture the city in one fell swoop!"

With an order, the soldiers hiding in the trenches waded forward through the snow. Nanaue, who was already in position outside the city, began to kill indiscriminately, tearing Nazi soldiers apart with his bare hands and resisting machine guns, truly showing the bloodthirsty and violent nature of the Shark King. Normally, Nanaue was very docile, but once he smelled blood, he lost his mind and went into a killing spree.

Alan took care of the bunker and rushed to the position in front of the city gate. This location was a blind spot for the artillery on the city wall. He picked up a rocket launcher and fired at the city gate, successfully breaking it open with three consecutive shots.

Blowing into the gun barrel, Alan said leisurely and proudly, "Rocket-propelled grenade. I like it the most."

"Kill! Kill! Kill!"

"Bloodthirsty! Violent! Slaughter! Hahahaha…" At this moment, Nanaue fell into a deep madness. He no longer distinguished between friend and foe and was only thinking about slaughtering any living thing he saw.

Boop! Boop!

At some point, Alan jumped onto Nanaue's back and dug his ring and middle fingers into his nostrils, one nostril with each hand. Sharks went crazy when they smelled blood, so just blocking his nostrils should be fine.

Nanaue wanted to struggle, but his arms were too short to reach Alan. He shook his head and body but failed to get rid of him. The originally violent eyes gradually turned clear again.

"Where's master?" Nanaue seemed to have lost his memory and looked around for something.

"I'm here." Alan rode on Nanaue's head, and they looked into each other's eyes.
