Yagami Light's fingers flew across the keyboard as he hacked into Makima's computer, searching for the information he needed.
The self-taught hacking skills proved extremely useful, allowing him to navigate most public networks with ease. However, Makima's files seemed to be an exception—sealed with a high-level security protocol.
On the screen appeared a photo of a man with heavy eye bags and a deeply shadowed face.
In the name section was written: Endō Makoto.
Beneath that was the business address of the organization he belonged to.
"So he's a repeat offender... yakuza... loan shark..." Yagami Light murmured. Just as he raised his pen, preparing to execute him, the system's voice rang out.
Yagami Light froze.
A special mission?
Until now, all the missions he'd received were either main quests or daily tasks. This was the first time he had seen a mission with a clear objective.
"Interesting."
Light twirled the pen in his hand instinctively, his thumb and middle finger crossing.
"Taking on this mission means I'll get to experience the full capabilities of the Death Note... and uproot the organization behind him?"
"Completion level, Kira..." Yagami Light fell into thought.
What would Kira be like?
Kira should be a demon—a death god to sinners, a monster whose name alone strikes fear, a devil who brings dread...
"So, completion level probably means executing them face-to-face, at close range, without wrongful or missed kills."
"A god's first appearance must be grand, world-shaking—a miracle people will speak of for generations..."
(God complex-much)
The more he spoke, the more excited Yagami Light became. In the quiet, dark room, his powerful heartbeat echoed. Executing criminals face-to-face—such a risky move—was something he had never attempted before. The previous Death Note restrictions had always held him back.
He looked again at the three major permissions granted by the mission system.
No limit of usage, no cause-of-death restriction, no true name requirement.
(He could kill people without any limit even with made up name as long as he 'knew' who the target was, which I am pretty sure the author is going to ruin this somehow.)
In other words, in the truest sense, kill whomever he wants , wherever he wants.
He couldn't help but lick his lips.
Under the warm yellow light, his deep red eyes gleamed with danger. The smile at the corner of his lips sent chills down one's spine. His slender fingers crossed under his chin as he murmured, "And tomorrow's the weekend... Let's have some fun, then."
"Accept mission."
『Mission Accepted – Permissions Granted』
Yagami Light blinked. There didn't seem to be any physical changes just a bit ache in the head.
---
He opened the door and walked out, finding Makima on a yoga mat in the first-floor living room. Her upper body was pressed against the mat, while her long, slender legs were tightly raised upward.
He only gave her a quick glance before looking away.
"No loophole to exploit, huh..."
He had been hoping to use this opportunity to see if he could view the true name of someone not tied to the mission. But the sly system had left no gap to exploit.
He turned and walked into the kitchen, making himself a hot cup of soy milk.
A good habit of his.
·Never sleeps later than 11 PM.
·Always gets eight hours of sleep.
·Drinks a cup of soy milk before bed.
·Never carries any stress into the next day.
Lack of sleep harms both health and cognitive ability.
Why do people stay up late? Because life feels empty. To give life meaning, one must wait until the night falls and the outside world is completely veiled. Only then can the eyes and mind find a reason to deceive themselves.
In the stillness, with no one else around, the world belongs only to "me." No time feels safer than the dead of night. It is then that people can fully contemplate the reason for "I think, therefore I am."
But Yagami Light was different.
With the notebook at his side, he had never felt emptiness in life. More than anyone, he understood the meaning of his existence.
Execute all before sleep, and awaken reborn.
Draining the soy milk in one gulp, Yagami Light laid back down on his bed. He took out his phone, ready to send a date invitation to a certain gyaru.
The weekend was different from regular days. With Makima's obsessive control, Light needed a proper excuse to go out. Anticipating a future need, he had planted this seed back in middle school.
Going out on a weekend date with a gyaru? Sounds like a totally valid excuse~
As Makima herself said, he was at "that age" now~
Halfway through typing, he hadn't expected the girl to beat him to it and send a message first.
[Tsuki-kun, long time no see. Would you be free to have dinner in Central District tomorrow night?]
Yagami Light paused for a moment, then swiftly deleted the message he had just typed. He hadn't expected this kind of mutual unspoken understanding, but this worked in his favor. If the other party was the one to initiate things, it would be easier to align their stories later on.
[Alright.]
…
The next morning.
"You said you have to go out this afternoon?" Makima asked casually, wearing loose pajamas.
She held a knife and fork, cut off a piece of bacon, and affectionately brought it to Yagami Light's mouth.
"Mm. It's a female classmate."
Makima glanced at him. "I see~"
Though her tone was calm, Yagami Light could sense a trace of danger. He quickly added, "It's someone you know, Makima-san. Why not take a guess~"
"Tsuki-kun is so popular with girls—how could I possibly guess?"
"It's Kitagawa. Kitagawa—surely Makima-san remembers her, right?"
Not daring to keep it vague any longer, Yagami Light took out his phone and showed the conversation to Makima.
Kitagawa Marin—a flashy gyaru he had known since middle school. They were still schoolmates, though in different classes. After entering high school, with both of them absorbed in their respective new social circles, they hadn't spoken much.
Still, that didn't change the fact that she made for a very convenient tool since his aquisition of the Death Note.
Enthusiastic, cheerful, generous—she had no romantic notions about spending time alone with the opposite sex. Their relationship was pure friendship. Using her as a shield… was smooth and carried no emotional guilt.
Makima had met her before, so there wouldn't be any unexpected issues.
"Kitagawa, huh…" Makima nodded, showing her approval. She was certainly a memorable girl. She lifted her hand and glanced at her watch. "Will you be home for dinner?"
"As for dinner… I probably won't be back. It's been a while since I've seen Kitagawa, so we'll just grab something simple outside."
"Crime's been rising lately. Be home by nine," Makima instructed. "I care deeply about Tsuki-kun, you know~ Tsuki-kun won't get mad at me for that, right~?"
Although Light knew this was Makima's controlling nature at play, he couldn't refute the logic.
The man-eating demon active in Chiba had always begun his attacks after 9 p.m. Though that didn't guarantee safety, it was still a sensible precaution.
Yagami Light nodded. "I understand. I have cram school later in the evening anyway."
