Chapter 14 - The Iron Vow

The fire crackled in the quiet cave, casting flickering shadows on the rocky walls. Aelric sat against a boulder, his thin cloak over his shoulders offering little protection from the chill. His right arm still ached from the battle earlier, but the pain was dull, fading. What lingered wasn't the hurt—it was the weight of everything he'd learned.

The System had shown him what the world was.

And what he might become.

Reward: +1 Endurance, +1 Willpower

He didn't flinch at the notice this time. He'd grown used to the voice—used to its timing, its indirect choices. But this was different. A path? Aligned? He hadn't selected any path… had he?

"Path Alignment." he muttered aloud. "That's not a class. That's something else.".

The fire popped, as though in answer.

He looked across the flames to the woman still outside on the other side. She was breathing evenly now, though her color was still pale. The dried blood at the corner of her lips had caked. He'd done what he could with the limited healing supplies on hand—a handful of bitter-smelling herbs and the system's low-level healing spell he'd unlocked, Basic Restoration.

And still she lived. That had to count for something.

"You saved a person," he reminded himself. "You, of all people."

It was unreal. In his former life, mercy had always been a luxury—one he couldn't afford. There was no charity in the labs, no justice in the dark prison cells. There was only pain and silence.

But here. there was choice.

There was a groan from the girl. Aelric stiffened immediately, hand near his sword. Her eyes fluttered open—stormy blue, unfocused. She blinked at the firelight, frowning in confusion.

"Where…?" she croaked.

"You're safe," Aelric said, voice expressionless. "For the moment, anyway."

Her eyes locked onto him, wary, but not fearful. "You're the one who…"

"Yeah. You were dying. I pulled you out of the mud and bandaged you up. That's all."

She tried to sit up and took a sharp gasp.

"Don't move about too much. Broken ribs."

There was a silence. She eyed him cautiously, like a trapped wolf choosing to bite or run. Finally, she spoke again.

"Why save me?"

Aelric didn't answer at once. He gazed back at the fire.

"I don't know," he admitted. "Maybe I didn't want another ghost staring at me."

He rolled his eyes. "Thanks for that."

The girl coughed, weak but smiling faintly. "You talk to yourself a lot?"

"You'll get used to it," he muttered.

More silence.

"Name's Seris," she offered, voice rough.

"Aelric."

Another pause.

She gestured weakly to the odd symbol scorched into the cave wall behind him—a triangle with three intersecting lines.

"You… marked this place?"

He shook his head. "Was already here. This cave's part of a Trial Ground."

Her eyes widened slightly. "A Trial Ground? From the system?"

"Yeah. And I think it's not finished yet."

He rose slowly, brushing off his cloak. The system hadn't given him a quest since the ambush with the wolves—but now, a sense of tension tickled the edge of his awareness. Like something was waiting. Watching.

System Alert: Trial Continuation Activated — [Safeguard the Flickering Spark]

His fists clenched. "Of course."

"What's wrong?" Seris said, seeing his jaw tighten.

"Trial isn't finished," he snarled. "It's just changed its parameters."

He crouched and pulled a knife from his boot, examining its edge. Not sharp enough.

I have to guard the entrance," he stated gruffly. "We'll be stormed before long."

"You don't have to—" Seris started.

"Yes, I do," he cut in, tone cold but determined. "The system did assign it to me. That's reason enough."

She slid into the shadows of the cave, appearing as though she wanted to protest, but a deep breath of hurt stopped her, and she was silent. He moved quickly, stacking rocks and dragging what few logs he could find to bar the cave entrance. He set traps—primitive ones constructed of string and sharpened sticks—and rubbed ash into his palms to mask his scent.

The world outside the cave became dark. Snow began to fall. Gently at first, but relentlessly.

Then there was howling.

Aelric slowly faced the entrance, something kindling deep in his chest—not fear, not dread.

Concentration.

He unsheathed his sword and stepped toward the cave's mouth, his gaze locked on the storm beyond.

And for the first time since awakening in this accursed world, he felt something like… determination.

Not vengeance. Not rage. Just a cold, iron certainty.

He would protect this girl.

Because he chose to.
