Chapter 40
The next morning, the family gathered around the table for breakfast in high spirits.
Dad Gu sipped his porridge with side dishes, Gu Xi nibbled on steamed buns with lotus leaf porridge, and Mom Gu had her usual bread, bacon, and milk.
"Xixi, look outside!" Dad Gu pointed out the window. As Gu Xi turned to look, he swiftly stabbed at the steamed bun in front of her with his chopsticks.
"Gu Changan!" Before he could lift the bun, Wei Xiangqin's fork came down with a crack, snapping his chopsticks in half.
"Wife! Why does our daughter get meat buns, but I don't?" Gu Changan looked wronged. He just wanted a taste of meat.
"Have you forgotten what your medical report said? Your blood lipid levels are sky-high, and you still want meat?" Wei Xiangqin huffed, forking the bun back onto Gu Xi's plate with a loving smile. "Xixi just got discharged from the hospital. She needs nourishment."
"I protest!"
"Protest denied."
Gu Xi laughed at her father's pitiful expression. "Hang in there, Dad!" she said with a grin, and slowly picked up the bun, deliberately taking a bite in front of him and chewing it dramatically.
The rich aroma wafted into his nose. Gu Changan glanced at the plain white porridge and stir-fried greens in front of him, then looked enviously at the delicious spread on his wife and daughter's plates, and his frustration flared again.
"If you won't let me eat properly, then… then I'll just go out to eat!"
"You dare?" Wei Xiangqin narrowed her eyes dangerously. When it came to her husband's health, there was no room for negotiation.
"I…" I don't dare.
Seeing her father meekly pick up his bowl and start drinking his porridge, Gu Xi shot her mother a look full of admiration.
Wei Xiangqin, seeing her husband sulking, pulled out a plate of hot vegetarian buns from the oven and placed them in front of him. "Look at you—such a grown man, still bickering with your daughter over food. Eat up! You think I'd really let you starve?"
Only then did Gu Changan's frown ease. Hmph, he thought, women still have to listen to men. A man must be well cared for to live well.
After a hearty breakfast, just as Gu Changan was preparing to head out, Gu Xi looked at her parents seriously and said, "Dad, Mom, I want to go to Beijing."
