Damien closed his eyes but the expected action did not happen. After waiting for a while, he opened his eyes again and realised that Sister Elisa was now kneeling down on the ground and chanting.
Magic circles formed at her feet and suddenly a white light fell on his body.
Damien started to feel his eyes grow tired and a cool feeling like a spring breeze flowed through him. His muscles slowly relaxed and the tension between his eyebrows faded. Finally his eyes closed and his breathing grew steady. He fell into a deep sleep.
When he opened his eyes again, the room was quiet. Damien got off the bed and walked through the door. In the first room filled with bookshelves, Sister Elisa was reading a book quietly while sitting in a chair.
When she saw Damien waking up, she smiled and asked, "How do you feel?"
"Very comfortable!"
In the past few hours he had been quite stressed. After all, suddenly being transmigrated into a strange world, and then being told you have awakened the demon king system, anyone would be tense. But now he felt that all the worries in his mind had gone away and he was full of strength.
This magic…not bad!
He took out a piece of silver from his bag, and then feeling generous he placed it on the table with a smile:
"The payment. Keep the change."
"Oh my!" Elisa had stars in her eyes when she looked at the gleaming silver. She hesitated for a moment but finally accepted the money.
[Elisa has gained +10 favorability]
[Sister Elisa]
[Magic Level: Lvl. 60]
[Current favorability: 25 (Acquaintance)]
Sister Elisa is a lvl. 60 mage? Damien was surprised. Then why was she living in this shabby place? A mid-level mage could already make very good living in the capital, especially someone like Elisa who practised holy magic.
"Thank you patron! With this money, the children can finally eat some meat!"
Elisa didn't know all of his thoughts, she was just grateful.
"Children?"
Damien hadn't seen anyone in the church, so he thought it was just Elisa. After they went up to the ground level, it was already evening, so Elisa invited him for dinner as a way of saying thanks.
Damien wanted to find out more about the church so he agreed.
It was only when he followed her to a back room, that he finally met the 'children' she was talking about. They were orphans that she had picked and took in.
Looking at the three young girls who looked to be in their teens wearing the same nun robes, Damien wasn't sure if they could be called kids. They were probably only a few years younger than him.
He couldn't help but wonder how old this Sister Elisa was? She looked like she was in her early thirties but magicians had many ways to mask their appearance. Unfortunately the system didn't tell him, and he didn't ask, considering it might be rude to ask a woman her age.
The four people sat around a dining table and ate a simple meal. The three young girls didn't speak too much, maybe because there were strangers here, but Elisa was very talkative.
Through her, Damien learned more about the church and how it became like this.
"Actually, over a hundred years ago our Church of Evernight was very popular, it's not known what happened, but people's faith started to fade, and the Goddess Evernight was gradually forgotten. We might be the only place left in the Dawn Empire who still remembers the goddess!"
Elisa had a sad expression as she explained. "Now we can only get by relying on selling some holy trinkets, or like before, by performing calming spells."
"What about the Church of the Everlasting Sun? They don't bother you guys?" Damien didn't really understand how the church was allowed to operate while worshipping a pagan deity.
"The Everlasting Sun…they don't bother us."
A light flashed in Elisa's eyes but it was quickly hidden. However, Damien, who had been paying close attention to the beautiful woman, still noticed it.
There is a story there.
He didn't delve deeper into it but asked more about the surrounding places. After dinner Damien bid farewell to Sister Elisa and her 'children' and left.
Looking back at the tall building that looked a little gloomy in the dim moonlight, Damien couldn't help but think it seemed like a pretty good place. It's remote and no one seems to care about it. And they seem poor so many things would be easier to handle.
After all, the original body came from a noble family, although in recent times, their luck wasn't so good, they still had quite a bit of wealth saved up.
When Damien made it back to his dorms it was almost 10 pm. His friend, Wayne, who lived next door, heard him so he also came out of his room.
"Hey Damien where were you? Someone people were looking for in the evening."
"Oh, I just went to the city for a walk. Why were they asking for me?"
Wayne shook his head, and explained with a little resentment, "Of course it's for the tournament with the elves next week. They want you to participate. Ah, if only I was stronger, then I could show off as well!"
Damien laughed, but thinking of the elven academy and a possible demonic expedition, his mood became worse.
Before he went into his room, Damien turned and asked Wayne an important question:
"By the way Wayne, have you heard of the Church of Evernight? Or the Goddess Evernight?"
Wayne thought for a moment but he still said no, even adding:
"How could there be a church like that in Artem? There's already the Church of the Sun, the royal family wouldn't allow other places to exist right? They'd be too scared of it being a front for demonic worship or something."
Back in his bed, Damien was thoughtful. He didn't know if the Church of Evernight was really a front for demons before, but he knew it would be soon.
