Light walks over to the computers in headquarters. He and L are now completely alone—it's late at night, and everyone else has gone home.
He could put the next phase of his plan into motion—take the next step toward becoming the god of a new world. But...
The guilt is killing him.
He has taken lives—so many human lives. While he may not feel guilt over the criminals he's judged, it's different when it comes to those who were simply doing their jobs. People who were chasing him not out of malice, but out of duty. Trying to catch a killer.
They didn't deserve to die.
And yet, he killed them anyway.
This can't go on.
He needs to come clean.
"Ryuzaki, I need to confess. I'm Kira."
L freezes in his chair, his hand suspended halfway between the jar of sweets on the desk and his mouth. He's completely stunned by Light's sudden confession.
'What is this?
Some kind of mind game?
Has he realized he's falling into my trap?
No, no, no.
Kira wouldn't give up this easily. This has to be another one of his tricks.
Let's play along for now.'
"Well, Light, I have to say... I never thought you'd finally admit to being Kira after all this time."
'Let's test the waters for now.'
"I know, Ryuzaki. But the has been killing me.
I've murdered not just criminals, but innocent people—people who were just trying to catch what they perceived to be a murderer.
They didn't deserve to die."
"...Oh?"
'Kira isn't the kind of person to feel guilt over a few casualties in his grand design.
He believes he's a god—above mere mortals like us.
Could Light be having a mental breakdown?
Was I wrong about him from the start?'
"Hmm... So, if you are Kira, Light, then how did those people die?
How did they all have sudden accidents... or heart attacks—some of them at exactly the same time?"
L's eyes narrow. He watches Light carefully, waiting for an answer.
'This is the real test.
If he gives me a concrete explanation, maybe we can finally put this case to rest.
How did a student kill millions of people across the globe without leaving any trace?'
"Oh, I used this magic Death Note that I got from a Shinigami.
If you write a person's name, cause, and time of death, that's how and when they die.
If it's not possible, the default is a heart attack."
'…I see. He's completely lost his mind.
The pressure must really be getting to him.
I was out of my mind to suspect that a kid like this could be Kira.
Or that bringing him into the investigation was a good idea on the off chance I was right.
Light needs a therapist. I need an exorcism.
This is a complete embarrassment. A stain on my career.
We probably had everything wrong from the start.
I need to call Watari and get us out of here before this spirals further.'
"Well, Light, that's a very compelling theory..."
"...but I'm afraid your confession doesn't quite match the evidence we've collected."
Suddenly, L presses a phone to his ear with urgently, hoping that Light will buy into his shoddy acting.
"Oh? What's that, Watari?
Kira's been sighted... in London?
We need to leave immediately to continue the investigation?
Understood."
L puts down the phone, stands, and begins walking quickly towards the exit.
"Sorry, Light. It's been nice working with you, but it seems we were wrong about Japan.
Say goodbye to the team and your father for me.
Goodbye."
"Hey, wai—"
L slips out the door, almost desperately, leaving Light alone in the building.
There is a long pause before Light finally comes to terms with what just happened.
"Uh... I guess I win?"
