Leila sucked in a breath. This was the worst scenario ever, her mom meeting Gavin. How did she even want to introduce him to her? As her boss? She did not even know what they were doing, he could not possibly ask her out while he was still engaged to Adele. Her life was a mess at this point. She was thinking about a thousand things in her head, she had to think about a solution and she had to think fast.
"Do you mind coming back later?" Leila blurted out. She was panicking as it is. Her mother would not let her hear the end of it if she made the mistake of introducing Gavin to her.
Gavin raised his eyebrow, "Do you have a visitor? Or you do not want me in your house anymore?" He asked.
"Leily? Have you been ambushed at the door". Her mother asked again. Leila covered her eyes in embarrassment. Her mom was overly dramatic.
Gavin chuckled, "You definitely do have a visitor, who is the person though?"
"Well, it is my mom. Long story cut short, Adele gave her to me as a surprise treat" Leila said as a matter of fact.
"Adele?". Gavin asked
Leila rolled her eyes, "Which other Adele do you know? Yes! Adele Cooper, your fiancée. She is hell bent on destroying my life bit by bit. Get your woman on a leash please" She screamed. She did not mean to disrespect him or anything but it was starting to piss her off. This was the third strike and she was not going to back down without a fight. The man in question too was not doing anything about it. At this point, she did not care if he was her boss anymore, she just had to vent to someone and he was the one person she could take I'll it on since he understood the complexity of the situation.
Gavin brushed his hair with his hand. " I did not mean to bring this much chaos into your life babe. I will fix this okay? I will make sure to make it right. You have my word" He assured her.
She was about to reply when her mother interrupted, "Who is this? Are you her boyfriend?" Mrs Baker asked point blank.
Leila let out an exasperated sigh, "Mom! Not every man you see with me is my boyfriend!" And please come in Mr. Hasters.
Gavin grinned, "That would not be necessary Mrs Baker, I just came to confirm the documents that I emailed to you. Have a nice night"
Leila sighed again but in relief this time around, she just dodged a bullet. At least Gavin understood the assignment and played along with his mom. She was about to tell him goodbye but she settled on something entirely different instead. "Mr. Hasters, please could you give me Miss Cooper's contact information?"
"Miss Cooper? Adele Cooper? Gavin asked in surprise.
Leila nodded in affirmation, "Yes sir"
"That is really surprising Miss Baker, I will email it to you when I get home, my phone is out of battery right now. I know it is unprofessional but I could not help it. Anyways, good night" Gavin said to her, then facing her mom who was still standing there, examining him and actively trying to decipher the relationship between the two of them, he felt pressured to add to what he said "Have a nice night too Mrs Baker. You are really lucky to have Leila Baker as your daughter. She is my SECRETARY and she does a very good job at that" He made sure to emphasize the "Secretary" word. If Leila was doing this then two could definitely play the game.
"Thank you very much Mister, and yes, Leila is really efficient" Mrs Baker said with a smile, leaving both of them and going back into the apartment.
Gavin smiled also, with that, he discreetly winked at Leila before leaving. Leila watched him leave before entering the apartment. She met her mother sitting on the couch, "Mom, you need to leave"
"Leave? I just got here Leily" Her mother countered.
Her phone chimed with a text, she checked it and it was from Gavin
'I am sorry bout Adele, I will take care of it but if you still feel like you need to reach out to her, this is her contact information, (212) 555-1234. Sleep well, do not be late to work tomorrow : )'
She smiled before copying the contact number, "Goodnight mom, you can have the couch, I am going to bed" She left to the bedroom and locked the door behind her. She pasted the number to her phone and tried dialing the number, the line ringed twice before the receiver picked the call, she heard rustling and then a feminine voice, "Who is this?"
Leila gritted her teeth before answering, "You have been threatening me and you did not save my contact?"
She heard a mischievous laughter from the other end of the phone, "Leila? Did you get my gift?"
Leila laughed, "Yes Adele, I did and I just called to inform you that the GAME is on. How ever it ends, just know you brought it open yourself"
After saying that, she hung up. She was not going to sit around anymore and let Adele treat her like dirt. She was going to fight back and she was going to start doing it now.
