Chapter 28 - The Attic's Secret

Liam climbed the creaky attic stairs, flashlight in hand. Dust motes danced in the beam of light. He reached the top, heart racing slightly.

What was he looking for? Emily's words echoed: "Grandma says to check the attic."

Liam swept the light across trunks, boxes, and forgotten memories. Then, he spotted an old, ornate box with intricate carvings. It seemed out of place.

He approached cautiously, feeling an inexplicable pull. The box was locked, but the keyhole seemed to be calling to him.

Suddenly, the attic creaked, and Liam's heart skipped a beat. He turned, but there was no one there.

Liam's curiosity got the better of him. He examined the box more closely, searching for a hidden key or a way to open it. After a few moments, he found a small catch that, when pressed, released the lock.

The box creaked open, revealing a collection of old letters, photographs, and a small, antique locket. Liam's heart skipped a beat as he recognized the locket – it was his grandmother's.

He opened the locket, and inside, he found two photographs. One was of his grandmother as a young woman, and the other was of a man he didn't recognize.

Liam's mind was racing with questions. Who was the man? Why did his grandmother have this locket? And what did it have to do with Emily's messages?

As he delved deeper into the box, he found a letter addressed to him.

Liam's curiosity got the better of him. He examined the box more closely, searching for a hidden key or a way to open it.

After a few moments, he found a small, hidden catch. The box creaked open, revealing a collection of old letters, photographs, and a small, antique locket.

As Liam opened the locket, a faint scent of lavender wafted out. Inside, he found two photographs: one of his grandmother as a young woman, and another of a man he didn't recognize.

Liam's mind was racing. Who was the mysterious man? And why did his grandmother keep these photographs in a hidden box?

Suddenly, a piece of paper slipped out of the box. Liam picked it up, and his eyes widened as he read the words:

"For Emily, when the time is right."

Liam's eyes scanned the attic, his mind racing with questions. Who wrote the note? What did it mean? And what was the significance of the locket and photographs?

He carefully gathered the contents of the box and made his way back downstairs. As he entered Emily's room, she looked up at him with curious eyes.

"Find anything?" she asked.

Liam hesitated, unsure how much to reveal. "I found a box with some old photographs and a locket," he said, showing her the contents.

Emily's eyes widened as she took in the locket and photographs. "Grandma's locket," she whispered.

Suddenly, Emily's expression changed, and she looked at Liam with a serious gaze. "Grandma says it's time to tell the truth."

Liam's heart skipped a beat. What truth?
