Chapter 2 - Anything worth doing

[Devrin Pov]

As I Move through the shop as Watto talks to a customer, you can pick up a lot about the people here, just by the way they talk. Confident? Probably mercenary. Arrogant? Probably rich. Shifty? Probably stole something and is tryna make a quick buck.

For what Watto's worth he does teach you how to run a business, whether that's cause he expects me to work it for him when he gets lazy is another question.

"Anything not on the shelves has to purchased from the big man." I say to a customer in a kid's voice. God I hate that. "He keep all the good stuff under lock and key." I say walking into another section. That's part one of my multi step plan. How many steps is it? Yo, mind ya business.

"Hi ani!" I say seeing my little 'brother' walking in, "how are you today?"

"Tired" Anakin dragging his little body behind the counter. I say Anakins my brother but we look nothing alike. Anakins brown hair and blue eye, contrasting with my brown skin, white hair, and purple eyes, a change I'm still getting used to.

I still remember waking up a month ago. The searing pain of years of memories being added to your sub conscious. The vague sense of both familiarity and the unknown. If I hadn't woke up Anakin falling out if bed, the scream that tore through the night sure did.

"What got you so tired?" I say ruffling his hair before fixing a untidy shelf.

"It's a secret." He smiles mischievously and I make a mental note to find out that secret.

"Whatever gear head." Making my self look busy I case the room. Watto has quite the reliance on tech security. Two makeshift security drones, a big but simple droid with a blaster as his left hand, and a biometric scanner on his personal, and security, doors. Not to mention the slave chip in me and my family's heads.

Okay so step one disable the slave chips. Should be easy enough, just grab the controller and turn them off. Watto keeps it in his office most of the time, since Anakin and I are well behaved. Only problem is that biometric scanner.

I guess it time.

As sunset approaches Watto sends us home. Even he won't get caught outside after dark, Tatooine is not a place where the weak survive without backing. Watto, being the junk man, has that. Us slaves? Hell no! Watto just wants to save money, who want to have to buy new slaves for no reason.

"Why do we have to listen to him?" Anakin asked as we walked home. Anakin being 4 is large enough to do small tasks at the shop and mom had to stay home with a fever. "I wanted to stay home and help mom."

"We have to, if we didn't he might have made mom come with us today." Putting my hand in his shoulder, "we're slaves Anakin. If we disobey the chip in our neck will shock us , or even worse blow up."

"Blow up?" Anakin looks confused. I mimic a explosion with my mouth and hands, and his face pales. "Then what do we do?"

"You do nothing. I have a plan." I playfully push him.

"We're home!" Anakin rushes toward our mothers room ignoring Yaga sitting at the table. Thank for watching over her mis-"

"There is no need for thanks between us." Yaga is an older human woman, suntanned skin, grey hair, and a aura that naturally relaxes you. She is the oldest slave in this area, seeing mom with the both of us, she walked into our lives and never left. Constantly checking in on us when she has free time. Bringing us food, the leftovers she get from her…. 'Master', I don't like that word, not in this context.

"No I will thank you, not because you did it, but because you could have been doing anything else." I say that genuinely, she has been nothing it good to my family.

Anakin comes racing out the room. "Mom said she's feeling better. She might be able to come with us tomorrow." He said with enthusiasm.

'How does such a sweet boy turn into that monster?' I asked myself. The longer I interact with my new family, that question constantly reappears. Why does this boy who loves robots become a mass murdering psychopath. "That's great" I say messing up his hair once again.

"Say thank you to Yaga, without her mom might have been sick longer.

Yaga tried to protest but I interrupted, "please, I'm trying to teach him manners."

"Thank you Yaga!" Anakin runs into her embrace. She doesn't respond, such words aren't necessary.

"Alright alright, let her go she has thing to do. You will see her later." Pulling Anakin away, "let me walk her home then I'll get dinner ready."

"Can I come too?"

"Then who will take care of mom?"

Walking out in the the last minutes of sunlight, Yaga and I make our way to her hut. "You seem tense." She says to me slowing her pace.

"Just tired."

"You and I both know it's not that, why don't you tell me? I could ease your mind, if only for a moment."

I sigh, " have you ever known you had to do something, but knew if you failed you'd be in a worse place than before." Trying to keep my deepest thoughts confidential I continue. "I want to do it, no, I have to, but what if I fail? What if it was all for nothing? What if-"

Yaga pulled me into a hug, my 8 year old body putting up no resistance. Running my back she says, "fear is natural, the unknown is a scary place, but anything worth doing is worth doing poorly. Even if you fail you tried."

I didn't even realize I stared crying.
