Chapter 13 - Spells

After seeing the old man's memories, Hildr clearly knew the location of the Crown of Midnight.

As she was being burned by the powerful spirit flames, she saw the young woman, Amelia, running away. From the Principal's memories, Hildr had learned that the Principal had chosen this woman as the guardian of the crown. He had not made this decision out of nowhere. He had been thinking about doing this ever since he felt Amelia's great power. Among all the students, Amelia had the most Soul and was thus the most suited to guard the crown. With the power, the crown would not so easily seduce her into evil.

Amelia had gotten a message from the Principal just a few minutes ago, and this message told her about her new responsibility. She had entered the secret treasury, and there, she had grabbed the crown and fled with her sister.

The crown was on her right now, and as she fled across the ice, Hildr felt great anger. This woman was running away with what Hildr wanted, and this was totally unacceptable. She stopped being passive and let her Soul fill the world. The mortals would call this magic, but in truth, it was Soul—the power of the Otherkind.

In that moment, Hildr gained control over the world around her. The Soul of the Draugr was tuned towards water. The frozen lake trembled from her power, and all those who felt this Soul could not stop themselves from freezing their bodies, even their breathing. This was their instincts trying to tell them that the only way to survive was to go unnoticed by this predator. Some of the students were far too weak, and they fell to their knees with their hearts coming to a stop. The only reason they were still alive, even with their hearts not pumping, was because they were Otherkind.

Hildr did not have the mercy needed to save these students by retracting her Soul. She instead made her power flare up even more. Whooosh—a wave of water came out of her hands and met the powerful flames. The spirit flames were more powerful than this water that Hildr had just summoned, but the quantity of the water was more than enough to make up for the shortcomings in regards to quality. Hildr wanted to finish off the old man as fast as she could, now that he was no longer of any use. He was now only a liability. Hildr was clear on the fact that she could not allow any witnesses to live. This was because the Draugr could not afford to offend the many Otherkind clans.

The water overwhelmed the spirit flames, and just as the flames were about to go out, the old man moved onto his final attack.

He knew that Hildr wanted to finish him off so she could chase down the crown.

He had to buy more time for Amelia to flee.

Once she reached the capital, even the Night King would have no recourse but to give up on his wild ambitions.

"The sun never sets," the Principal said in the Spirit Tongue. This was one of the languages closest to the ancient laws that governed power in this world.

"You created a spell!!1" Hildr was shocked by this revelation.

All the Otherkind could use Soul—or what the ignorant could call magic—but this was limited to a few simple things like manifesting water, fire, and the other elements. If one wanted to truly use Soul to do some real damage, they had to create spells. In the life of an Otherkind, they could perhaps create one spell, and that would be enough for them to forever be remembered.

Most of the Otherkind could not create a single spell even until their deaths.

This was because each spell had to truly resonate with the world and embody what the person was.

A spell could only be used by the creator since only they would be able to make the spell resonate with the world. Only they would understand what each character meant to the world and to them. Even if they were to clearly explain what their spell did and what each word meant, no other person in the world would ever be able to truly grasp the spell.

There were, of course, exceptions to this rule. These were the *Mortal Spells*. These spells could be used by anyone who knew about them. This is why they are restricted by those in power.

An average Otherkind could go through their life without even learning about the existence of these spells.

When the old man spoke the first sentence of the spell, Hildr sensed the resonance with the world. She also understood that this was not one of the Mortal Spells. This was because she had done her research on the Principal and the academy before attacking. If they had even a single Mortal Spell, she would not have attacked in such a straightforward manner.

Since the old man was now invoking the power of a spell, this meant that he had to have created his own spell.

This showed his great talent. Even Hildr was moved by the greatness of this old man. She even felt pity that she had to end this old man.

Hildr was called the greatest genius of the Draugr, and yet even she had yet to create a single spell of her own.

Hildr moved backward as the old man continued speaking.

"The sun never rises."

He said. The old man's body began glowing.

His skin became crimson, and his hair flew about wildly as Soul gathered to him from all directions.

"All beings are singular in their existence."

Each word made the world become hotter and colder at the same time.

Hildr wanted to flee at this moment. Even though she had seen the old man's memories from beginning to end, she had not seen anything that had to do with the spell. This was because only the creator could live the spell, and no one else.

Even the words the old man was speaking right now were different from what Hildr was hearing.

"The world changes, but the sun remains."

At this moment, Hildr could have sworn that a sun appeared behind the old man.

"Enduring loneliness is the path to transcendence."

The moment the old man uttered the last word, the darkness of the night was chased away as a second sun appeared above this island. It then exploded with all its power focused on Hildr.

The old man knew that he was going to die this day, but he still wanted to take his killer along with him.
